ref. 029777USA Dr. Stanfield-Maddox was a university professor in Georgia with an earlier career in graphic design and art; one of her commercial endeavors was the design & marketing of original paper dolls in the 1950s. This group has original art for "Froggy Went A-Courting" and for the "Presto the Magician and Pinkie his assistant" paper doll characters. The originals pieces include pencil drawings for the "Froggy" costumes and color renderings of the figures of Presto & Pinkie. An accompanying handwritten note by ESM regarding these and another doll: "This paper doll that I designed in 1958 for the De Jarnette Company of Atlanta Georgia later absorbed by Whitman Publishing was a boxed paper doll set a best-seller item in the Toy Department of Rich's later Macy's Department Store at Christmas 1958….As far as I know the two other paper dolls int his notebook "Froggy." and "Presto…" were never published." The unnamed untitled cover doll described is here with photocopied & digital color copy examples a couple sets. The pages with "Presto" items have another note - "…They would have formal and casual clothes and costumes for different "illusions." This might be used as one of your attractive new small-sized 15c books." Possibly these dolls were to be marketed by ESM to Whitman or other publisher There are photocopies of the Froggy items too. ESM maintained an interest in paper dolls over the years; also here are a few catalogs from the paper doll & ephemera business of R.H. Stevens of Umatilla Florida dated from the early 2000s; some items are 'ticked' as if for purchase or inquiry. Please see the pdf of the extensive oral history of ESM at the UNC Wilmington website with a little bit of commentary on her interest in the doll world and much on her early years in Georgia as professor of Spanish Literature at GSU and the war years in Wilmington NC. 2004 interview conducted by Sherman Hayes of UNCW Special Collections Everything retained in plastic sleeves in a standard 10" x 12" three-ring binder and in very good condition. .
