First Edition, folio (470 x 290 mm), [5], 6-60pp., 10 engraved plates (4 folding on 2 sheets joined) after A. Fyfe and Thomas Donaldson, plates II and III with short tears not touching the image, plate V a little creased with short closed tears, nineteenth-century half calf, rubbed, covers detached. This was "The first serious study of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty." It contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on the ten plates "which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon." (Heirs of Hippocrates 1011). The plates depict the foot, various joints including the knee and hip, and four of the plates are life-sized representations of the entire arm and leg. Monro secundus' earlier publications were largely polemical, and it was not until he had been teaching for twenty-five years that his three main contributions to medical literature appeared. Monro's Observations on the Structure and Functions of the Nervous System (Edinburgh, 1783), a massive text and atlas on human and comparative neurology, is Monro's greatest work. His Description of All the Bursae Mucosae of the Human Body... was a practical manual for direct use in surgery. Although next to nothing was known of germ life at that time, Monro's acute observation and independent empirical judgement led him to the conclusion that the chief danger of infection in surgery of joints lay in exposure to the air. First English edition, [8], 185, [7] p., 20 leaves of engraved plates, small old faint stamp to title, buckram, recent full red morocco, spine gilt, contrasting green morocco title label. An important monograph on the operation for the stone. "The 20 engraved plates are remarkable fine, two of them illustrating the chapter "Of the Posture and Situation into which Children are to be put; when they are to be Cut" are interesting both as extremely early examples of specialised surgery for children and as illustrating the difficulties of surgical techniques before the advent of anaesthetics. An important work in the history of urological science."?Dawsons, 187. Wing, T1775; Wellcome V, p.283; Krivatsy, 11909 (imperfect).
1844ref. 14056Philadelphia: Carey and Hart 1844. First Edition. later marbled boards. Good; binding worn and scraped; some moderate foxing to the text; all the color plates are clean and bright; diminishing tide mark along lower border touching the text for the first 25 pages. large 4to. There are 80 color lithograph plates. The text contains four sections Elementary and Minor Operations General Operations Special Operations and Plastic and Subcutaneous Operations thereby making this the first text on plastic surgery published in the United States as well as one of the earliest atlases of surgical procedures. Pancoast taught at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He developed a number of new operative procedures G - M # 4170 & G - M # 4855 as well as new procedures notably the 'plow and groove' or plastic suture critical to rhinoplastic operations. The illustrations in the book are graphic instructive and beautifully rendered by James Queen A. Newsam P. C. Hollis L. Brechemin and S.Cichowski and are beautifully lithographed by Peter S. Duvall of Philadelphia. Norman stated in his catalog # 4 1978 that the book was hand-colored. The subtle detail features of operations are hand highlighted but the high quality lithography of Duval shines throughout. The plates in these handful of color copies are printed on a superior quality paper resistant to the usual foxing found in ordinary black and white issue of the book. The book in its uncolored state is widely held by the institutions and shows up with some regularity at auction; but there has been no copy of the first edition in its colored state at auction for more than three-quarters of a century. Reese Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books cites only the third edition and states: 'Pancoast's work was one of the most extensively illustrated medical works published in America before the Civil War. It was available with either uncolored or colored plates and in the latter format it is one of the most impressive color plate books of its era.' The binder of this copy mistakenly placed two groups signatures out of order. The book however is complete with all 80 plates and 380 pages of text. The backstrip is worn away and crudely 'repaired' with cloth tape. G - M # 5598; Cushing P 38; not in Bennet; Reese citing only a much later printing. Carey and Hart hardcover books
