‎FARRAR-HOCKLEY, ANTHONY, GENERAL SIR. FOREWORD BY HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES.‎

‎The Army in the Air: The History of the Army Air Corps.‎

‎Alan Sutton / Army Air Corps, Stroud, 1994, first edition.. 268 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750906170 Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "From military ballooning in the Sudan in the nineteenth century to helicopter assignments in the Gulf in the late twentieth, Arm y aviation has been at the forefront of Britain's military operations. Here, for the first time, the remarkable story of the Army Air Corps is compellingly told..The British Army was first involved in airborne operations as early as the 1 8 8 0 s , w h en it established a Balloon Section in the Corps of Royal Engineers. Subsequently, it was among the first armies in the world to recognize the military implications of the invention of the aeroplane and, following the success of t h e Ai r Ba tt al i on , which replaced the Balloon Section in 1911, a handful of enthusiasts emerged to form the Royal Flying Corps. The Army returned to the air once more with the outbreak of the Second World War, making a unique contribution to gr ou nd op era tio ns th rou gh aerial observation for artillery and by providing glider pilots for British airborne forces. Soldier pilots were retained after the war for target spotting and liaison work, and when helicopters arrived, the Army i nsi ste d o n o pera ting th ose eng age d in the warp and weft of land battle, reviving its own Army Air Corps to this end. 'The Army in the Air' tells the fascinating story of those spirited and skilled individuals who lie behind the distinguis hed hist ory of t he Ar my Ai r Co rps, from the early military balloonists of the Victorian age to the efficient fighting force of today - and tomorrow." "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became int erested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squ a r d r o n R C A F. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Ma lt a in t he s p ri ng o f 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires.." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with ot her s pro bab ly des tr oye d a nd damaged. ‎Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. 1991, reprint.. 289 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1560980168 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten a re the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air cam p a i g n i n history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to creat e th e Ro ya l A ir Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in Wo rl dWa r II. ‎GARDINER, JOHN EDWIN. EDITED BY DAVID E. SMITH.‎

‎Letters Home: The Wartime Correspondence and Diary of John Edwin Gardiner Rcaf (1919-1942).‎

‎University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center, Regina, Saskatchewan, 2004.. 197 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 088977157X B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1 940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will r e a d a l l about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife , Vi ol et , f ou nd the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. A ubi n L e C au f o n s eve r al occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for the ir g rave s. Joh n Ed win Ga rdiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, a nd m ost t ouchi ng, h owe ver, is th e ge nui ne family affection that pervades these letters." Fine.‎
