‎HANSON, NEIL.‎

‎Unknown Soldiers: The Story of the Missing of the First World War.‎

‎Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2005, first American edition.. 474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0307263703 B&w photographs, map. "The First World War was a conflict of unprecedented ferocity that unleashed such demons as mechanized warfare and mass death on the twentieth century. After the last shot was fired and the troops marched home, approximately three million soldiers remained unaccounted for. Some bodies were found, but they bore no trace of identification; many more men had been blown to smithereens or had s i m p l y vanished into battlefields where as many as a hundred shells had fallen on every square yard. An unassuming English chaplain first proposed a symbolic burial of one of those unknown soldiers in memory of all the missing dead. The idea w as p ic ke d u p by almost every country that had an army in the war, and each laid a body to rest amid an outpouring of national grief - in London's Westminster Abbey, Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Rome's Victor Emmanuelle Monument, and, for the United St ate s, Arl in gt on National Cemetery in Virginia. In (this book, the author) offers an unflinching yet compassionate account of the reality of battle on the front lines. He focuses on three soldiers - an American, an Englishman, and a German - an d na rra tes the ir war experiences through their diaries and letters. (He) describes how each man endured the nearly unbearable conditions in the trenches and in the air and relates what is known about their deaths; all three died on the batt lefie lds o f th e So mme, wi thin gunshot sound of one another. He delves into their familial ties, the ideals they expressed in their letters, and he explains how the death of one, the American pilot George Seibold, was instrumental in the creat ion of the G old S tar M other s, a n organization caring for bereaved mothers, wives, and families that is still active today. Hanson animates and brings to life the combatants who perished without a trace, and shows how the Western world arrived at the now ti me-hon ored w ay of mourn ing and paying tribute to all those who die in war." Tiny piece missing from edge of rear pastedown, two tiny tears at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has tiny tear and very l ight wri nkling a t top o f spine , mino r wrin kling at top/bottom of flap-folds. Very Good+/Very Good+.‎

"(T)he compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Kn own to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption, but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command, determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost . U s i n g as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle, the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for t h e Oh ka p rogram, in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title, and this is the first time they have told their own story..(C)ombines military histo ry, t e ch nic al inn ovation, and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked, men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride, poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fan at ics or aut omat ons, but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story, and returns to them their humanity." "During the war, Canadian squadrons flew hundred of operations over the North Atlantic, the English Channel, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Such operations included reconnaissan ce flights as well as shipping strikes to Norway, the Netherlands and the French coast. Each operation is reported in meticulous detail, from the time of departure, current weather, hours flown and crew involve d t o a d es cri pt ion of th e a ction itself." This is a new, unread book. ‎HENRIQUES , ROBERT:‎

‎100 Hours to Suez‎

‎Collins 1957 First VG/VG edgewear tear to dj grubby on rear of dj 254pp endpaper maps Illustrated with drawings by Yehuda Harari 8.5 x 6 410g ¶ An account of Israel's campaign in the Sinai Peninsula. This book is an acount of the campaign, its origins and its outcome. Robert Henriques served in the British Army for 30 years. He describes the Sinai campaign with a soldier's knowledge and is the first full account of what happened in the Sinai Peninsula, but it is not simply a description of a brilliant victory. The author analyses the causes of the war, the nature of the Israeli achievement, and the opportunity which her victory offered the world to settle a problem which, if it remained unsettled, would inevitably lead to further, larger, and more bloody conflicts.‎

‎To Perish Never‎

‎London England, Cassel & Co, 1954. Second Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall Hardback Hardback. Slight mark to top edge of back inside cover. Wear and tear to D/J. Flying Officer Peter Saunders joined 330 Squadron at Saxonby with his trined but untried bomber crew in 1944. This is the story of their first tour of operations in the Lancaster Z Zebra, a story which vividly recaptures the atmosphere of a night-time bomber station in war. It is the story of ordinary men, drawn from ordinary homes, the test of whose courage lies ahead; courage that must stand the strain of dark hours of flying in the ever-present menace of fighter attack; courage that must see them through the hell of the turbulent night above the target, glowing with the fantastic light of flares and fires, the sky alive with probing fingers of light, or seemingly inpenetrable flak; courage that must survive the long flight home, searchinf, always searching for the fighters waiting to destroy them, weariness in cramped limbs, sleep fighting to overcome tired brains; courage that must endure those last never-ending miles over the North Sea with its prospect of a plunge into the bitter waters should damaged engines fail. This was the life for which Peter and his crew had been trained. For this they came to Saxonby. 188 pp.‎
