‎Biotechnology : the making of a global controversy‎

‎Cambridge University Press Cambridge 2002. First Edition. Original Boards. Very Good/No Dustjacket. 411 pages. Light soiling to edges. Light staining to bottom edge. No dustjacket. Biotechnology is one of the fastest-growing areas of scientific technical and industrial innovation and one of the most controversial. As developments have occurred such as genetic test therapies and the breeding of genetically modified food crops so the public debates have become more heated and grave concerns have been expressed about access to genetic information labelling of genetically modified foods and human and animal cloning. Across Europe public opinion has become a crucial factor in the ability of governments and biotech industries to exploit the new technology. This 2002 book presents the results of a unique cross-national and cross-disciplinary study of the relationship between the development of new biotechnology and public perception media coverage and policy formulation. It outlines a conceptual framework for understanding these issues and contains a number of empirical studies including studies of the international controversies surrounding the cloning of Dolly the sheep and GM Soya. Size: Octavo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Biology; Social & Cultural History; Britain; Modern; 411. ISBN: 0521773172. ISBN/EAN: 9780521773171. With a preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. London: Macmillan and Co. 1935. Later Hugh Thomson illustrated edition. Octavo 7 1/16 x 4 3/4 inches; 180 x 120 mm. Frontispiece xxx 298 pp. With 110 black and white illustrations in the text. Bound by Bayntun Rivière Bath ca. 1935 in full dark blue crushed levant morocco covers decoratively bordered in gilt front cover with a beautifully' contoured' inlaid design in red tan green and brown morocco reproduced from the illustration on page 240 spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt gilt board edges and turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. A very fine example. The front cover illustration is taken from the text illustration on page 240 and depicts Mary Smith the narrator posting a letter to Miss Matty "I dropped it in the post on my way home and then for a minute I stood looking at the wooden pane with a gaping slit which divided me from the letter…" Cranford which originally appeared as a serial in Charles Dickens' magazine Household Words 1851-53 and saw its first publication in book form in 1853 is "a series of linked sketches of life among the ladies of a quiet country village in the 1830s.The greatest charm of Cranford which has kept it unfailingly popular is its amused but loving portrait of the old-fashioned customs and 'elegant economy' of a delicately observed group of middle-aged figures in a landscape" Oxford Companion to English Literature. Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell 1810-1865 a "strong and independent-minded woman" The Feminist Companion to Literature was an important proto-Feminist writer who often tackled unorthodox subjects in her novels. Cranford for example concerns a community of spinsters who glory in their freedom from male interference. Mrs. Gaskell was "'the most popular with small question the most powerful and finished female novelist of an epoch singularly rich in female novelists'" Enclyclopedia of British Women Writers p. 264 citing Mrs. Gaskell's obituary in The Athenaeum. "Critical awareness of Gaskell as a social historian is now more balanced by awareness of her innovativeness and artistic development as a novelist. While scholars continue to debate the precise nature of her talent they also reaffirm the singular attractiveness of her best works" ibid of which Cranford is one.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1935 hardcover‎

‎Fiction, Famine, and the Rise of Economics in Victorian Britain and Ireland‎

‎Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, (2003). orig.boards. x,229 pp, 23x15cm, Series: Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-century Literature and Culture, 40.. Some rubbing. Spine lightly bumped. VG, ¶ Contents: Part I. Origin Stories and Political Economy, 1740-1870: History as abstraction; Value as signification; Part II. Producing the Consumer: Market indicators: banking and housekeeping in Bleak House; Esoteric solutions: Ireland and the colonial critique of political economy; Toward a social theory of wealth: three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell; Conclusion. ["During the Irish Famine of 1845-52, novels by Dickens and Gaskell, as well as a range of commentaries on the Irish disaster, argued for a new theory of individual expression in opposition to the systemized approach to economic life that political economy proposed. These romantic views of human subjectivity eventually provided the foundation for a new theory of capitalism based on the desires of the individual consumer." - Publisher's description]‎

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell née Stevenson 29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865 often referred to simply as Mrs Gaskell was a British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society including the very poor and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. The Life of Charlotte Brontë is the posthumous biography of Charlotte Brontë by fellow novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. The first edition was published in 1857 by Smith Elder & Co. A major source were the hundreds of letters sent by Brontë to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Gaskell had to deal with some sensitive issues. She toned down some of her material: in the case of her description of the Clergy Daughters' School this was to avoid legal action from the Rev. William Carus Wilson. The published text does not go so far as to blame the school's founder for the deaths of two Brontë sisters but even so Wilson published a short "refutation" of the biography. Although quite frank in many places Gaskell suppressed details of Charlotte's love for Constantin Héger a married man on the grounds that it would be too great an affront to contemporary morals and a possible source of distress to Charlotte's still-living friends father Patrick Brontë and husband. She also suppressed any reference to Charlotte's romance with George Smith her publisher who was also publishing the biography. Wikipedia D.Appleton and Company hardcover‎

‎BRONTE Charlotte . GASKELL Elizabeth‎

‎The Life of Charlotte Bronte‎

‎New York: Barnes & Noble Classics 2005. original pictorial coloured wrappers. Fine. Thick octavo. 'In 1855 Charlotte Bronte pregnant and married less than a year fell ill and died of tuberculosis -the same disease that had killer her sisters and brother. Two years after Charlotte's death her friend Elizabeth Gaskell herself a well-known novelist completed 'The Life of Charlotte Bronte' a biography that was met with immediate acclaim by readers curious to discover more about the enigmatic author of 'Jane Eyre.' Both a work of art and a well-documented interpretation of its subject Gaskell's biography is an extraordinarily vivid and sensitive account of Bronte's outer and inner lives: her shyness and strangeness her intense appreciation of the Bible poetry music and the theatre; her love of family; and her fears of loneliness. Meant to be a defense and vindication of 'a noble true and tender woman; the book paints Brotne as an unforgettable figure careening between depression and exaltation." - from the cover.
