‎BIGELOW, GORDON [1963- ]‎

‎Fiction, Famine, and the Rise of Economics in Victorian Britain and Ireland‎

‎Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, (2003). orig.boards. x,229 pp, 23x15cm, Series: Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-century Literature and Culture, 40.. Some rubbing. Spine lightly bumped. VG, ¶ Contents: Part I. Origin Stories and Political Economy, 1740-1870: History as abstraction; Value as signification; Part II. Producing the Consumer: Market indicators: banking and housekeeping in Bleak House; Esoteric solutions: Ireland and the colonial critique of political economy; Toward a social theory of wealth: three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell; Conclusion. ["During the Irish Famine of 1845-52, novels by Dickens and Gaskell, as well as a range of commentaries on the Irish disaster, argued for a new theory of individual expression in opposition to the systemized approach to economic life that political economy proposed. These romantic views of human subjectivity eventually provided the foundation for a new theory of capitalism based on the desires of the individual consumer." - Publisher's description]‎

Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell 1810-1865 a "strong and independent-minded woman" The Feminist Companion to Literature was an important proto-Feminist writer who often tackled unorthodox subjects in her novels. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell née Stevenson 29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865 often referred to simply as Mrs Gaskell was a British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society including the very poor and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. The Life of Charlotte Brontë is the posthumous biography of Charlotte Brontë by fellow novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. The first edition was published in 1857 by Smith Elder & Co. A major source were the hundreds of letters sent by Brontë to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Gaskell had to deal with some sensitive issues. She toned down some of her material: in the case of her description of the Clergy Daughters' School this was to avoid legal action from the Rev. William Carus Wilson. The published text does not go so far as to blame the school's founder for the deaths of two Brontë sisters but even so Wilson published a short "refutation" of the biography. Although quite frank in many places Gaskell suppressed details of Charlotte's love for Constantin Héger a married man on the grounds that it would be too great an affront to contemporary morals and a possible source of distress to Charlotte's still-living friends father Patrick Brontë and husband. She also suppressed any reference to Charlotte's romance with George Smith her publisher who was also publishing the biography. Wikipedia D.Appleton and Company hardcover‎

Sir Francis Drake is one of history's enduring figures. His exploits as a marinerexplorer and military genius are fixed amongst those most celebrated in British historywhile his deeds and enigmatic character continue to attractthe attention of historian's the world over. Few of Drake's personal possessions survive andof thesehis drum is perhaps the best known but least studied artefact of almost any from that period.Charged with the essence of Drake's own bombastic characterthis is the drum that thrilled his men and their captain with its call to arms.Famed also for it's mystic property in foretelling possible attack upon the English shoreand celebrated in Newbolt's eponymous poemno detailed study has previously been made of the drumor of the military flags amongst the oldest surviving in Europealso the property of Drake. In 'The Battle's Sound'Cynthia Gaskell Brown provides a detailed study of these atrefacts;and how they were made their military useand their historical significance. The author's findings add much to our understanding of Drake the man and his stirring times.
