Nel 1955, concepito e impaginato da Tériade, usciva l'album Les Européens, con una copertina di Joan Mirò. Henri Cartier-Bresson ci aveva lavorato cinque anni, un breve periodo se si considera che le celebri Images à la sauvette, nel 1952, provenivano da una raccolta di venti anni. Ciò che offriva quel libro era dunque il ritratto serrato di un'Europa del dopoguerra, in ciui le rovine accumulate, i segni della fame e della miseria sui volti apparivano ancora chiaramente.

Dorso restaurato professionalmente nella parte superiore (Spine professionally restored at the top corner). Prima edizione (First Edition, first printing). . L'editore greco, parigino d'adozione, Tériade (Stratis Eleftheriadis), famoso per le sue edizioni pregiate con artisti del calibro di Matisse, Mirò e Leger e per le riviste Minotaure e Verve, aveva progettato un libro con Henri Cartier-Bresson già sul finire degli anni Trenta. Ma sarà solo dopo la guerra e la fortunata retrospettiva al Moma nel 1947 dell'Artista che Teriade riuscirà finalmente a pubblicare Images à la sauvette nel 1952 e tre anni dopo Les Européens, stesso formato del primo, con copertine disegnate da Joan Mirò. Le immagini di quest'ultimo furono scattate dal 1950 al 1955 e ritraggono, come già suggerisce il titolo, l'Europa del dopoguerra (da Parr/Badger, "The Photobook: A History". Vol. I)
