Volume composto da sole immagini, con il testo confinato ai risvolti della sovracoperta. L’immaginario cupissimo di Carrieri ha contribuito sostanzialmente a edificare l’immagine — largamente esagerata — di una Milano inospitale sia per il clima («his Milan seems a city of incessant drizzle and snow») che per la (dis)umanità «in which commercial values hold sway over everything else» (ibidem). Molto buono (Very Good). Sovraccoperta leggermente sciupata lungo i bordi con piccolissime mancanze (Dust jacket slightly worn along the edges, with very small lacks of paper). Prima edizione (First edition). . Il volume è costituito da dieci scene che raccontano Milano senza bisogno di alcun testo, fatta eccezione per una breve biografia dell'autore. Carrieri, fotogiornalista e direttore della fotografia, rimase lontano da qualsiasi altro progetto per due anni, dal 1957 al 1959, per fotografare esclusivamente la nebbia, la periferia, la vita notturna, gli abitanti di Milano. La metropoli fu immortalata da ben 3.500 scatti eseguiti entro la cinta daziaria di Milano fra il gennaio e l'agosto del 1958, su pellicola rapidissima 35 millimetri. Da questa imponente mole di immagini Carrieri selezionò le 135 destinate al volume. Nessuna immagine fu ripresa in luoghi privati: un progetto, si potrebbe dire, tutto ''girato in esterno''. Uno stradario è collocato all'inizio di ognuna delle dieci scene ed aiuta ad orientarsi. Il fotografo non nasconde nessuno degli aspetti meno attraenti e duri della città, non soltanto quando riprende la grigia vita di periferia, ma anche quando ritrae il centro dei negozi e del passeggio, che riesce a far sembrare più scuro e minaccioso del vero, al pari delle zone periurbane. Anche il tempo è ''strumentalizzato'': la Milano di Carrieri è sotto scacco di una pioggerella incessante e di un cielo plumbeo carico di neve. La sua attenzione per gli aspetti più sordidi della vita di città nell'intento di smontare il mito della metropoli ne ha fatto uno dei libri più riusciti del neorealismo fotografico, che proprio a fine anni Cinquanta concludeva la sua parabola.
