Boston: Atlantic Monthly / Little Brown 1963. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. B/w Illustrations. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. This copy is inscribed on the half title to Frank Goodman "one of the last of the old-time Broadway press agents a star handler and headline hustler" New York Times. The drawing and inscription are on the half title. The inscription which is framed by and incorporates the drawing reads "For Mr. Frank Goodman Man Ray April 2 1963". The floating eye is above Ray's signature and the nose and mouth extend beneath the inscription. CONDITION: Nice copy in the original black cloth in gilt and copper in first issue jacket complete with $7.95 price slight surface wear to jacket with wrinkle at top; book has been recased with new endpapers; some light staining to top and bottom edges of text. Man Ray born Emmanuel Radnitzky 1890-1976 American painter photographer and conceptual artist active in France a leading light of the Dada and Surrealist movement. Jess McKinley's obituary in the New York Times offers a brilliant look back at Goodman's career: "In an era when movies like "Sweet Smell of Success" made Broadway seem like the most glamorous and gritty terrain in entertainment Mr. Goodman was as reliable a presence as broken hearts and dreams come true. From 1939 when he started his career to 1961 Mr. Goodman represented more than 50 Broadway productions including eight shows in 1960 alone. Over the years Mr. Goodman would act as a booster and sometimes as a baby sitter for every type of show person and show personality from the volatile genius Jerome Robbins of "Gypsy" to the delicate ingnue Audrey Hepburn in "Gigi" in 1951 to the predictably haunted playwrights William Inge and Clifford Odets among others. Summing up his career in his unpublished memoir Mr. Goodman started with an adage about the publicity game: "You don't get paid for the work you do; you get paid for the grief you take." Mr. Goodman seemed to believe that but only to a point. "Still and all" he wrote "there's worse ways to make a living". Atlantic Monthly / Little Brown unknown

MAN RAY
Électricité
1931. . 10 photogravures 1931 after Rayographs each signed to paper each signed in the negative Paris: Commissioned by La Compagnie Parisienne de Distribution d'Electricité each image 26 x 20.6cm. or inverse each paper mount 37.4 x 27.6cm. Électricité is among the most acclaimed works by Man Ray - a dynamic assemblage of ten rayographs that the artist made as a commission for a private power company that wanted to promote the domestic consumption of electricity. At the time most homes in France relied on natural gas wood or coal for lighting cooking and heating. Man Ray used electrical appliances light bulbs a toaster an iron a fan and electric light to cast the objects' shadows on photographic paper. Then he added wavy trails of power cords and heating coils - symbolic traces of the unseen effect of electric current. He also included five images of his own photographs female nudes and other pictures that he may have appropriated a roasted chicken night-time signage the moon. In Électricité Man Ray demonstrated how electricity essentially an invisible force could be a subject and also a modern medium and how it might effectively make a tasty dinner meal cool the kitchen eroticize the body and thus contribute to the quality of life for working-class Parisians. 1931. unknown

Hartford Connecticut; Paris; New York James Thrall Soby; Cahiers d'Art; Random House 1934. . First edition second issue with the cancel title stating 'second edition'/'deuxième édition'; folio 310 x 240 mm.; English & French portrait by Picasso photographic studies and portraits throughout light stain visible to top edge of last leaf some softening to page corners a few leaves reinforced at inner margin with removable tape but overall internally very good; publisher's spiral bound card covers upper cover with large full colour photographic illustration by Man Ray plastic at spine cracked in two places with some loss to rings near foot some creasing and edge-wear to covers with minor loss to fore-corners closed tear to lower cover near spine but overall a good copy. A very good example of this famous photographic work by artist Man Ray notable both for the rich often dreamy photographic studies of the female form celebrity portraits Stein Dali Derain Matisse Picasso et al general subjects and rayographs cameraless compositions created by resting objects on unexposed film as well as the textual contributions by André Breton Paul Eluard and Tristan Tzara. The title-page designation of 'second edition' is widely held to be spurious an attribution designed to imply high demand and boost sales. MAN RAY.
Photograph of his famous readymade titled "Perpetual Motive" 1970.
Turin: Galleria Martano 29 March 1971. Photographic print 234 x 176 mm. Housed in a brown plastic folder with two clear plastic sleeves one sleeve for the print the other with a sheet with the gallery's printed address apparently as issued. Typed statement of authentication on verso signed by the artist's representative with the gallery stamp in ink. Good condition. Number 17 of 40 prints only authenticated on the verso as the work of Man Ray by Luciano Anselmino with the gallery stamp. The photograph depicts the final iteration of Man Ray's metronome with a lenticular photograph of an eye fastened to its moving arm. The two images show the work in both phases with the eye open and the eye shut. An iconic object of Dada the readymade was produced first in 1932 and then reproduced at intervals throughout Man Ray's career under different names including Object of Destruction Object to Be Destroyed Lost Object or Last Object 1945 and Indestructible Object 1958. In 1971 Man Ray finally titled it Perpetual Motif though the stamp here has "Motive". In 1967 Luciano Anselmino opened the Galleria Il Fauno in Turin where he exhibited many artists including André Masson Graham Sutherland Mark Tobey Hans Richter Andy Warhol and Man Ray. In 1974 Man Ray chose Anselmino to be his exclusive representative in Europe entrusting him to authenticate his works worldwide. Their friendship and collaboration remained active to the end of Man Ray's life. Turin: Galleria Martano, 29 March unknown
