L'ouvrage ne porte pour titre général que la date 1929 inscrite en gros chiffres sur la couverture puis deux titres se rapportant chacun à un semestre de l'année. Les poèmes du premier semestre (janvier à juin) sont de Péret, ceux du second (juillet à décembre) d'Aragon. Les 4 photographies de Man Ray sont titrées de l'une des quatre saisons (Printemps - Eté - Automne - Hiver) et contrecollées.Une des particularités de cet ouvrage délibérément pornographique est que les auteurs, Man Ray, Péret et Aragon, par défi, l'ont signé de leur nom en toutes lettres. Il fut publié par les soins de la revue bruxelloise Variétés dans le but de compenser les frais occasionnés par la publication du numéro spécial Le Surréalisme en 1929. Les directeurs (E.L.T. Mesens et P.G. Van Hecke), laissèrent le soin à André Breton et ses amis d'écrire ou de choisir les textes et les reproductions. Pour 1929... c'est Man Ray, Péret et Aragon qui s'y collèrent. Selon la légende, encore bien répandue, c'est l'organe de Péret que l'on pourrait voir sur les photos ou celui de Man Ray, ou encore que le modèle féminin ne serait autre que la célèbre Kiki de Montparnasse, compagne du photographe dans ces années. On a aussi, plus tard, prétendu avoir retrouvé les modèles qui auraient participé aux séances (Dutel, 1986). Il y a d'autres hypothèses... la plus vraisemblable est que Man Ray aurait choisi les photos parmi du matériel pornographique déjà existant, ce qui justifierait la qualité de grain assez médiocre des photographies.Très bel exemplaire dans son papier cristal d'origine.

This is an exceedingly elaborate Man Ray item published in conjunction with the tenth anniversary exhibition of Los Angeles' G. Ray Hawkins Gallery. The show itself was an elaborate homage to Man Ray and his special relationship with the city he called home for several years after the Second World War. It consisted of one hundred and eighty-two photographs paintings drawings objects and graphics. This catalogue cum object contains fifteen loose elements each unique to this publication. They are a: title page colophon "Dada Manifesto" by Man Ray printed envelope containing "A Sealed Object of Appreciation" "The Unfolding Interview" between Juliet Man Ray and David Fahey letter from Timothy Baum lapel button reproducing a Man Ray photographic self portrait perforated sheet of forty-nine "Cafe Man Ray" gummed stamps - with images of artworks on them two "Cafe Man Ray" paper match boxes "This is Cafe Man Ray" - a large matchbook-type cover containing a silver contact print of the installed exhibition checklist of the gallery's first ten years of activity exhibition checklist and an acknowledgements page. These are all housed in the publisher's black velvet-lined cardboard box with three printed pastedowns as issued. A brand new most handsome example of this elaborately designed and produced document.
