Partly-printed ADS 1p 6�" X 2�" Altadena CA 1928 April 23. Near fine. Pale green bank check from the Pacific-Southwest Trust & Savings Bank filled out entirely in Grey's hand to C.C. Markham for fifty dollars and boldly signed in his characteristic ink as purple as his prose. Normal cancellation perforations not affecting signature. An attractive example. unknown

II. 1915). - Als Schauspielerin am Budapester Stadttheater debütierend, trat die Schauspielerin häufig bei Gastspielen in Deutschland und am Deutschen Theater in St. Petersburg auf, wo sie mehrfach große Erfolge feierte. 1880 gründete sie in Wien das Grey-Theater, das auch als Ausbildungsstätte für junge Schauspieler diente. Grey-Stipek war die erste, die sich mit Atemtechnik beschäftigte und in den Schauspielunterricht integrierte. Zu ihren Schülern zählte neben Josef Kainz Bürgermeister Karl Lueger, der sich von ihr rhetorisch schulen ließ. Mit dem Drama "Der Schlierach-Lois" (1906) wurde sie auch als Schriftstellerin bekannt. Shortly after Joseph Pulitzer acquired the "New York World" in 1883 he hired this Russian-born writer journalist and artist -- whose fine etched portraits helped make him one of the fathers of modern newspaper illustration and incidentally helped make Pulitzer's new venture influential and profitable; he also illustrated such books as the first American edition of Tolstoy's "Ivan the Fool" 1891. Stunning original signed ink sketch heavy stock 7�" X 9 3/4" art board n.p. n.y. Very good. Pleasantly age toned to a creamy vellum color; lower left corner triangular roughly 4" X 2�" and lower right corner ditto roughly 2 3/4" X 1" creased and strengthened on verso but not terribly noticeable or disfiguring on recto; mounting traces on verso. A stunning head-and-shoulders portrait of General William T. Sherman in uniform later years gazing intently at the viewer. Finely executed in great detail Sherman appears tired and rather haggard with thinning hair and white beard. The eyes in particular are exceptionally well done and lifelike grabbing the viewer with their piercing intensity. Gribayedoff signs quite small at lower left noting "after photo" below his signature. We have not been able to pinpoint the occasion for this portrait or the specific photographs on which it is based but likely it accompanied a "New York World" story about Sherman. Gribayedoff originals are quite scarce and desirable. Despite mild corner damage a most handsome piece. hardcover

Ich bitte Sie, dies möglichst bald thun zu wollen und habe heute Schritte gethan, damit Ihnen die betreffende Nummer von London sofort zugesandt werde […]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. 8vo. 2 pages on bifolium. An appealingly pithy letter in English to an unknown recipient, with a musical quotation. The letter betrays a certain exasperation with his correspondent's questions: "I should think it quite impossible to answer your questions / 1) as I have no method at all when composing! / 2) as the art of composition is not at all to be learned and still - must be learned! / 3) as I have no particular favourite composer. All good composers are my favourites!' [...]". - The musical quotation comprises four bars from the violin sonata no. 2 in G (op. 13), on two staves. - Two larger tears rebacked. Pleyel to play with the "elite of the conservatory's orchestra" at the same time. He then received a somewhat delayed and oblique, and, at last, declining answer from M. Colonne, so that he finally asks his correspondent, who knows Paris better than he does, whether he should accept Pleyel's offer or ask Lamoureux, or whether he should postpone his Paris concert by one more year. - On stationery with printed address.

Sein langes Stillschweigen begründet er mit seiner Arbeit an der Übersetzung des Tasso: "[...] Nehmen Sie, was ich Ihnen anbieten kann mit Nachsicht auf. Es ist weder Vieles noch viel; aber ich rechne auf Ihre Gefälligkeit [...]". - Weiters ersucht er Kapellmeister Naumann zu dem Trauungslied eine Melodie zu setzen; das Lied sei ihm lieb, deshalb möchte er es nicht in geringere Hände geben. Dankt für Aufnahme seiner Phantasien in die "Erholungen". Um ständig daran teilzunehmen, sei er zu sehr mit Geschäften überhäuft: "[...] Ich bleibe noch ein Jahr in Göttingen, u. hoffe mich dann einmal wieder mit Ihren Dresdner Schätzen für diese Klausur schadlos zu halten [...]".
