Most unusual oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" St. Charles IL 1960 October 14. Near full-length side-by-side shot depicting Gilbert and Goelz in wrestling trunks against a white background each taking off their coat as if entering the ring. Gilbert at left inscribes boldly to the right of his legs in red ballpoint: "To Donald M. Burnell / A true and wonderful / Wrestling fan Your friend / in Sports always / Johnny Gilbert / Oct 14 - 1960 / St. Charles Livestock Center / St. Charles Illiones." sic Goelz at right inscribes boldly at upper right in blue ballpoint: "To a wrestler's best friend / Donald M. Burnell / Best of Luck and of everything / Your friend always / Billy Goelz / Fox Lake wrestler / Oct. 14 1960 / St. Charles Livestock / Center / St. Charles Ill." This handsome and most unusual item was likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. ‎Gilbert was a popular Midwest wrestling champion of the '50s and '60s holder of many titles half of a celebrated tag team with Billy Goelz. Williams was a fixture on early national wrestling telecasts out of Marigold Garden with tag team partner Ruby Kay; narrowly missed being part of the bloodiest wreck in wrestling history: on March 3 1945 a flight from England to Paris carrying six out of seven pro wrestlers on a USO tour to entertain Allied troops crashed killing all aboard; Williams missed this flight and later that month wrestled at a Fred Kohler wrestling program in Chicago to raise funds for his colleagues' widows and children. PS 5" X 3�" n.p. Chicago IL n.y. July 1960. Very good. Minor yellowish tape stain at each corner not terribly disfiguring and well away from signatures. Original black-and-white snapshot likely one of a kind showing Williams and Goelz at a table signing autographs -- Williams signs across the tabletop boldly in red fineline marker. Original black-and-white snapshot likely one of a kind showing what appears to be an arena dressing room probably Chicago's Amphitheatre with Gilbert and a smiling Christy looking a tad s-faced walking through a doorway Gilbert apparently supporting Christy who has his left arm about Gilbert's shoulders. At upper right in red fineline marker Gilbert inscribes it "Who's drunk / Johnny Gilbert." Beneath this also in red fineline Christy adds "or / Bill / Christy." L'auteur évoque également les combats de Yalu, Chemulpo et Santiago (à Cuba en 1898 : "A Santiago, les Espagnols perdirent 510 hommes sur 1900 : 350 tués ou noyés et 160 blessés. Les Américains eurent 1 tué et 1 blessé. Ils tiraient en toute sécurité comme à la cible, pariant bruyamment sur chaque coup, ce qui indigna le commandant d'un vaisseau qui rappela à ses officiers que leur cible étaient des hommes qui mouraient"...) An den Frankfurter Verleger Heinrich Ludwig Brönner bezüglich Korrekturen: "Ich verfehle nicht Sie zu benachrichtigen, dass ich von Dienstag 7 Juni bis Freitag oder Sonnabend eine kleine Reise machen muß, um Sie wegen etwaigen Ausbleibens von Correcturen nicht in Ungewißheit zu lassen. Kommt die erwartete Correctur des ersten Bogens morgen Montag an, so erhalte ich sie noch und expediere sie; kommt sie erst später so muß sie liegen bleiben und Sie werden ja ohne allen Zweifel von dieser Schrift genug Vorrath zu haben und fortsetzen zu können, so daß, da das nach der bisherigen Erfahrung bis zu Ende der Woche dauern wird, eine Verzögerung dadurch nicht entstehen wird. Entgegnung" erschien 1859 bei Brönner in Frankfurt. - Der Student August Wilhelm von Schlegels und Christian Lassens promovierte 1838 in Bonn, wo er anschließend als Privatdozent und seit 1844 als außerordentlicher Professor lehrte. 1845 folgte der Ruf als Professor für Theologie und orientalische Literatur an die Universität Marburg. 1859 kehrte Johann Gildemeister als Professor für orientalische Sprachen an seine Alma Mater Bonn zurück. - Mit geringen Spuren alter Montage und einem kl. ‎This Scottish cleric made his mark as a literary critic and poet best known as author of the popular poem "Bards of the Bible" 1851 as well as "Gallery of Literary Portraits" 1846 plus two sequels "Martyrs and Heroes of the Scottish Covenant" 1852 "History of a Man" 1856 and the 48-volume "Library Edition of the Briths Poets" 1846 which he edited; he's often remembered as the subject of "An Address to the Rev. George Gilfallen" the first poem penned by Scottish poet William McGonall 1825-1902. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Edinburgh Scotland 1860 January 28. Addressed to "George." Very good. Light age toning and touch of mild wear; printed slip from late 19th century autograph catalogue 4" X 3/8" tipped to top edge. On "Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway" letterhead an odd little note in brown ink perhaps hastily scribbled as Gilfallen awaited a train: "I am called today but too early I find you dont come till ten Give my kind regards to Mrs. I and believe me yours affectly." To a "chère Madame" about a recent review of Louis Le Cardonnel's poetry by the novelist and critic André Beaunier (1869-1925) that coincides with his own conception of religion, arguing to rid the world of "strange" literature, art and morals, which are supposedly responsible for a certain narrow-mindedness, asking her to convey his admiration for Beaunier to the same, and hoping that his text might encourage others to resist a simplicity of the mind: "[...] Je viens de lire dans la Revue des Deux Mondes la Revue littéraire consacrée par Monsieur Beaunier aux poèmes de Louis Le Cardonnel. Cette analyse est un chef d'oeuvre d'un bout à l'autre. Mais ce qui m'a enthousiasmé par-dessus tout, c'est la façon dont sont exécutés ces 'étranges littérateurs et artistes que nous avons, depuis quelque temps, et qui, du jour qu'ils ont résolu de consacrer à lui leur talent, ne lui consacrent pas, mais lui sacrifient leur talent' [...] Il y a si longtemps que je souffre de cette conception abâtardic de la Religion qui, en nom de la grâce, veut qu'on vide la nature de toutes les richesses que dieu même y a déposées, comme si dieu pouvait détruir d'une main ce qu'il a crée de l'autre. Es ist mir aber nicht möglich, mich unter den bestehenden Verhältnissen damit zu beruhigen und da ich nicht annehmen kann, dass Herr Hofrat Millenkovitsch nach kaum viertägiger Amtsübernahme über den Sachverhalt richtig und vorurteilsfrei informiert werden konnte, so erlaube ich mir an Sie, sehr geehrter Herr Hofrat, die ergebene Bitte zu richten, für mich ein gutes Wort einzulegen [...]. Als Anerkennung nach nahezu zwanzigjähriger Dienstzeit erhielt ich von Herrn Baron Berger eine Zulage in Form der Erhöhung meines Spielgeldes, da er selbst einsah, dass ich mit meinen Bezügen gegen andere Kollegen im Rückstand sei [...]. Nach einigen Jahre bei verschiedenen Wanderbühnen war er danach in Berlin, Koblenz, Budapest und Salzburg fest engagiert. 1885 kam er nach Wien, wo er zunächst am Carltheater spielte und ab 1892 Mitglied des Hofburgtheaters war. - Gefaltet.‎
