‎Kritik des logischen Absolutismus. - [THE CRITIQUE OF LOGICAL ABSOLUTISM - PRESENTATION-COPY]‎

‎(Stuttgart, W. Kohlhammer, 1954). 8vo. Stapled with paper backstrip. Recto of f.1 with stamp: ""Sonderdruck aus Archiv für Philosophie Band ""5"" (in hand-writing) Heft ""2"" (in handwriting)"" and with a four-line presentation-inscription from the author, signed ""Theodor Adorno"" and dated ""Frankfurth, Sept. 1954."" Pp. 130-169.‎

‎First edition, off-print, presentation-copy, of Adorno's ""Critique of the Logical Absolutism"", constituting his foundational critique of Husserls' theory of logical validity and its assistance on the absolute separartion between logical validity and subjective thought process, for which Adorno introduced the them ""logical absolutism"". The present critique of Husserl's logical absolutism profoundly influenced 20th century continental philosophy. The important and influential German philosopher and sociologist, Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund Adorno (1903 - 1969), was a leading member of the Frankfurt School, together with e.g. Horkheimer, Benjamin, and Habermas. He taught philosophy at the university of Frankfurt, but as a Jew, his teaching position was taken from him in 1933. He went to Oxford to teach, and in 1938 he emigrated to America, where he was the leader of several sociological projects in both New York and Los Angeles. Together with Horkheimer he wrote the theoretical manifest of the Frankfurt School, the ""Dialektik der Aufklärung"". In 1949 he returned to Frankfurt, where he became professor of philosophy and sociology. ""Theodor W. Adorno was one of the most important philosophers and social critics in Germany after World War II. Although less well known among anglophone philosophers than his contemporary Hans-Georg Gadamer, Adorno had even greater influence on scholars and intellectuals in postwar Germany. In the 1960s he was the most prominent challenger to both Sir Karl Popper's philosophy of science and Martin Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Jürgen Habermas, Germany's foremost social philosopher after 1970, was Adorno's student and assistant. The scope of Adorno's influence stems from the interdisciplinary character of his research and of the Frankfurt School to which he belonged. It also stems from the thoroughness with which he examined Western philosophical traditions, especially from Kant onward, and the radicalness to his critique of contemporary Western society. He was a seminal social philosopher and a leading member of the first generation of Critical Theory."" (SEP).‎

- [MAGNIFICENT PRESENTATION-COPY FOR THE CO-FOUNDER OF MODERN SCIENCE-FICTION]‎

‎Paris, 1916. Bound with the original illustreated wrappersin a lovely red quarter morocco binding with five reaised bands and gilt lettering til spine. Top edges gilt. Housed in a red paper slip-case with red morocco edges. Binding signed Alix. Light soiling to wrappers and occasional light scattered brownspotting. Overall a very nice copy.‎

‎First edition, presentation-copy for Josph Henry Rosny, of Apollinaire's splendid Rabelaisian mock-epic, considered ""the best of Apollinaire's works of imaginative prose"" (Simon Watson-Taylor, Times Literary Supplement). The long presentation-inscription on the fly-leaf is signed ""Guillaume Apollinaire"" and is for his friend the great author and co-founder of modern science fiction ""J.H. Rosny"". The inscription also states that it's written during his hospitalization, at ""l'Hôpital du Gouv. italien/ 41, quai d'orsay"". Apollinaire fought in World War I and, in 1916, received a serious shrapnel wound to the temple, from which he would never fully recover. His ""The Assasinated Poet"" appeared while he was in hospital, where he remained for a long time. ""Apollinaire was Modernism's first champion, and after his early death in 1918, he became its first saint. Lying in a hospital bed in 1915, recovering from combat wounds suffered in World War I, Apollinaire assembled the fragments of a tragicomic, mock-epic and occasionally obscene autobiography-a-clef: The Poet Assassinated. This novella recounts the life and death of Croniamantal, whose birth is -saluted- by the Eiffel Tower's -beautiful erection, - who rises through the Parisian literary world to proclaim himself - the greatest of living poets, - and who is then torn to pieces by a mob. A statue built -out of nothing, like poetry and glory, - is constructed in his honor."" (Andre Derain, from the 2004 English translation).J.-H. Rosny aîné was the pseudonym of Joseph Henri Honoré Boex (1856 - 1940), a French author of Belgian origin who is considered one of the founding figures of modern science fiction. Second only to Jules Verne, Rosny is the most important figure in the history of modern French science fiction. He is a vital precursor of the kind of scientifically based speculative science fiction now generally labelled ""Hard SF"". Sadly, only one of his novels, ""Le Félin géant"" was translated into English during his lifetime, and only many years later did his central works begin to appear in English. No large-paper copies of the work were printed.‎

‎"ARMENIAN TETRAEVANGELION MANUSCRIPT‎

‎Tetraevangelion (The Four Gospels) in Armenian. Manuscript on polished paper. Written and illuminated by Izit the Monk in the Monastery of Narek, South of Lake Van. - [EARLY 15TH CENTURY ILLUMINATED ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPT]‎

‎Monastery of Narek (Modern day southern part of Lake Van, Turkey), 1405. 4to. Binding measuring 180 mm x 145 mm. Strictly contemporary full calf binding over wooden boards. Extraordinarily, this manuscript has been preserved in its first binding, which was made by Dom Sarkis (Sergius), priest from Sebaste [as stated on colophon]. The more than 600 year old binding is very worn, especially back board and spine. It is missing some of the leather spine and the lower part (ab. 1/5) of the back board (both wood and leather on recto). Some small holes to front board, from ties and presumably some kind of ornamentation. Quite magnificently, the binding has never been exposed to restorations of any kind, and we have left it as it is, providing us full view of the cloth underneth the leather spine, the original stiching and the original capital cords, and the red silk between the wooden board and the leather. Remains of one tie to inside of back board. The last portion of leaves is quite worn at the bottom, where the binding has not been able to protect it due to the missing lower part of the back board. The leaves here at the end are curled, affecting script on the last ab. eight leaves. The damage to the leaves is marginal on the remaining portion of leaves at the end and does not affect the script. Apart from that, the leaves are quite worn in places and the book has evidently been well used and read. The first three leaves have extensive worming, causing loss of text, and a number of leaves towards the middle and end of the block have old re-enforcements to inner margins (an old kind of paper pulp). The block is worn at extremities, sometimes causing loss to marginal illustrations/notes. Some of the leaves are loose. The splendid full-page illuminations are somewhat worn.363 ff. Leaves measuring 180 x140 mm. Written space 130 x 90 mm. 17 lines in double colums, in Bologir script. Text:1. Gospel according to St. Mathew. 106 ff. Lacking first leaves of genealogy of Jesus. 2. Gospel according to St. Mark. 67 ff.3. Gospel according to St. Luke. 109 ff.4. Gospel according to St. John. 81 ff.Three illuminated title-pages (lacking the first for the gospel of St. Mathew) and three half-page headpieces and zoomorphic initials and opening lines of text. The manuscript was written for Taddeus the Monk, Priest and Philosopher, by Stephanos the Monk (Birth name Izit.), son of Amirbek and Turmeled, bother to Thoma Priest, Lazarus and Stephanos. Stephanos (Izit) is definitely the scribe and with all probability also the illuminator. The manuscript was donated by Taddeus, son of Khnkik and Avta, grandson to Khaceres and Shamam, brother to Stephanos, Astvazatur, Martiros, Tata, Elkhatun, Markhatun, Mama Tikin Zmrukht (Emerald), to the Religious order of the Church of Saint Teothokos, Dom Hussik, Monastery of Narek, near Lake Van (Prior: Lazar the Monk). [FULL TRANSCRIPTION IN ARMENIAN AND TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH OF ALL FOUR COLOPHONS ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST].‎

‎The legendary Danish writer, Karen Blixen-Finecke (pseudonym: Isak Dinesen) (1885-1962), was a Danish baroness, who married her cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, in 1914. They soon moved to Africa, where they ran a coffee-farm near Nairobi, and the happiest years of Blixen's life were spent here (she used to say that ""Africa made me""). The farm in the Ngong Hills is the centre of her world famous novel, ""Out of Africa"". She divorced her husband, who was cheating on her and gave her syphilis, in 1922, and in 1932 she moved back to Denmark after the farm had gone bankrupt and her lover, Denys Finch-Hatton, had died in a plane-crash. She spent the remaining 30 years of her life in Denmark, and died a legendary writer. She greatly influenced writers and cultural personas of the generations to come, and many authors recognize the direct impact she has had on their writings. Several of her novels have been filmatized, most famously ""out of Africa"" with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize twice, she was elected honorary member of ""The American Academy of Arts and Letters"" (1957), and her portrait is printed on the Danish 50 kr. notes. She is the absolutely most famous of all modern Danish writers, and the only one of international fame.‎
