Autograph signature. Lysaker, no date.
Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Starting out as a naturalist painter who frequently chose Norwegian themes despite studying and living in Düsseldorf and Munich most of the time, Munthe began experimenting with decorative art in the Arts and Crafts style in the 1890s, and created illustrations for the works of the Icelandic historian and poet Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). - Traces of small folds near lower right corner. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Murad Efendi, d. i. Franz v. Werner, Diplomat und Schriftsteller (1836-1881).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Murad"). Stockholm, 6. I. 1881.
4 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. Kl.-8vo. Beiliegend eh. adressierter Umschlag. Georg.

Muratori, Lodovico Antonio, Italian historian (1672-1750).
Autograph letter signed. Modena, 8. IV. 1739.
Large 8vo. 2 pp. Highly interesting letter to the curator of a museum of antiquities, concerning inscriptions from a "glorious collection of marbles" and other research-related issues. Muratori thanks the recipient for copies of inscriptions, writing enthusiastically that some were unknown to him and scolding himself for wrongly believing that he already knew the entirety of the collection: "Ho più volte fatto un rimprovero a me stesso, perché sapendo cotesta gloriosa unione di marmi, io sia stato si trascurato di non cercarne conto coll'immaginarmi d'averle già in mano." Therefore, Muratori announces that he will again name the recipient as he had before in his "Antiquitates italicæ medii ævi". - In the second part of the letter, Muratori answers several questions of the recipient. He has performed fruitless research on a Niccolò Bendedei in the archives of the chambers of Modena ("Libri Camerali") but still hopes to find his name in the lists of salaried magistrates ("nel ruolo dei salariati"). Niccolò Bendedei was a ducal secretary of the late 15th century. Muratori continues to advise the recipient that the book he had asked for was not Pellegrino Rossi's "Vita di San Geminiano" (Modena, 1736), but rather a criticism of Rossi's book that had been banned from sale. Nevertheless, he promises to send the recipient a copy, if he can "obtain one under the cloak", although he is sceptical whether this will be possible: "Appena se ne vide copia qui che fu proibite ai Libri il tenerne e venderne. - Finally, Muratori confirms that the second volume of his "Delle Antichità Estensi Ed Italiane" is "already under the printing press", complaining about the tardiness of his publisher Bartolomeo Soliani: "but this publisher Soliani works so slowly that I cannot say when it will appear". The recipient will be "among the first to have it". Effectively, Muratori's book was only published in 1740. - Two corners reinforced with paper, some stains and browning.

MURDOCK John R. 1885 1972
What Did the President Mean When He Suggested "A More Enlightened View" / Must We Amend the Constitution or Is There Safely Another Way
This Arizona educator and college dean wrote books about government as well; from 1937 to 1953 served that state in Congress as a Democratic representative. Two offprints from the "Congressional Record" each 1p recto and verso 8" X 11" dated 21 January 1937 and 16 February 1937 respectively. Very good. Faint original mailing folds. These two offprints both concern President Franklin D. Roosevelt's disastrous 1937 "Judicial Procedures Reform Bill" or "court-packing plan" legislation that would have allowed him to enlarge the court in such a way that would help push through his New Deal initiatives. It proved quite controversial and ultimately failed. But only two weeks after taking his congressional seat for the first time Murdock the newbie M.C. stood up to support FDR's plan. He opens modestly professing "it is rather presumptuous of me as a new man to rise so early in the session and explain in an offhand way my attitude toward the great issues which now confront us." and concludes that he does not favor a constitutional amendment to approve FDR's plan. His second speech delivered less than one month later continues to oppose a constitutional amendment and to support Roosevelt concluding "I trust the President and cannot bring myself to give any credence to the charge that he is attempting to become a dictator." At the conclusion of each of these speeches Murdock signs large bold and in full in black ink. This choice pair is accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed rubberstamp 1p 8" X 10" Washington DC n.y. Very good. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead the neophyte congressmen writes to "Dear Fellow Citizen" that "So large a number of my constituents have written me regarding the proposed judicial changes that I find it convenient to send copies of my speeches and this form letter because I cannot reply to each individually." He then backpeddles wildly: "Please note. that my maiden speech. was merely explaining what I thought the President meant in his first message to this Congress. This was fifteen days before his message recommending judicial changes. I had no idea that he would make any proposals nor what he would suggest if he did propose change. I feel that those of you who have written me in such grave alarm have been unduly perturbed in this matter." In other words he didn't feel FDR's court-packing plan would succeed. Ironically this form letter is signed using a rubber stamp -- even though the second-to-last paragraph of his second speech begins "I too dislike being dubbed a 'rubber stamp'"! A delightful trio -- and fortunately the original recipient future Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 had the foresight to request that Murdock sign each of his speeches. Most unusual. unknown

Murger, Henri, Schriftsteller (1822-1861).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. O. O., "Jeudi, 19".
1½ SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. Kl.-8vo.
