An einen Freund und Kollegen: "Auch auf mich hatte W.s Rede einen höchst unangenehmen Eindruck gemacht und ich hatte Augenblicke, in welchen ich zu zweifeln begann, ob es denn in meinem Kopfe richtig ist. Ihr freundliches Schreiben v. 25. hat mich wieder wesentlich beruhigt. Ohne [...] in der Lage zu sein, ein Urtheil über die Art und Weise zu fällen, in der manches geschehen ist, hat mich der mir wenigstens, zum größten Theile unerwartete Verlauf der Okkupation sehr peinlich bewegt, allein nicht weil ich mich durch A. irregeführet hielt, sondern weil ich mich mitverantwortlich oder, wenn man will, mitschuldig fühlte. Da auch hier, ich kann es nicht läugnen, die Okkupation, namentlich wegen der Opfer, die sie kostet, sehr unpopulaer ist, dachte ich daran, mein Mandat niederzulegen. Vorläufig hat man es mir ausgeredet. Letzteres würde mir nämlich ermöglichen, einen ganzen Tag länger zu Hause zu bleiben [...]". - Coronini-Cronberg "gehörte anfangs zum Klub der Linken, ging bei den Verhandlungen über den zweiten Ausgleich zum Fortschrittsklub über, der ihn zu seinem Obmann wählte, trennte sich aber 1878 von demselben, da er ein eifriger Annexionist war und Andrássys Orientpolitik, namentlich die Okkupation Bosniens, entschieden billigte, auch als Präsident der Delegation eifrig unterstützte" (Meyers 4. Gradisca, dessen Preis Sie mir noch nicht anzugeben wußten, als ich Ihnen das erste Exemplar entriß. Ich bin bald zu Ende mit der Lecture und bewundere immer mehr den Bienenfleiß, den Scharfsinn und die Liebe, mit welcher dieser gelehrte und gewandte Verfaßer seinen Schwanengesang der Monografie dieses Ländchens schenkte. Einer gleichen erfreut sich keine andere Provinz der Monarchie. Schade, daß die durch den Umfang des Werkes bedingte Höhe des Preises dem Absatz sehr beeinträchtigen wird [...]" (15. VIII. 1873). Die Postkarte auf Bl. 2: "Es hat mir Vergnügen gemacht, das letzte Wort Helfert's zu erhalten; ich erwarte seiner Zeit die Fortsetzung. 8vo. Altogether 3½ pp. Together with a letter by the politician Hippolyte Chauchard in connection with Corot's letters. Interesting correspondence with the mayor of Langres, Pierre Durand, concerning a possible loan of Corot's painting "Christ on the Mount of Olives" (1849) from the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Langres for the Exposition Universelle in 1867. In the earliest letter from 25 November 1866, Corot politely requests his painting for the important exhibition in Paris: "Je vous prierois de m'accorder, pour mettre à l'Exposition universelle de peinture, le tableau (Le Christ au jardin des oliviers) que vous avez de moi, dans le musée de votre ville [...]". Durand drafted his response directly on Corot's letter, agreeing to the loan under the condition that all expenses are paid. He adds that "the museum would be honoured to receive a new canvas from him". On 25 December 1866, Corot informs Durand that the painting is not eligible for the exhibition, as it was painted before 1855, and expresses his regrets that he will not be able to present it to a wider audience: "J'ai bien à vous remercier de la bonté avec laquelle vous m'avez accordé votre tableau du Christ. Je vous dirai avec regret que le tableau étant fait avant l'année 1855, il ne pouvait être exposé à cette Exposition universelle. J'en suis bien fâché, j'aurais été heureux de pouvoir le montrer au public [...]". Judging from the curious final letter, dated 23 February 1867, Corot probably forgot that the he had already informed Durand about the exhibition policy that rendered the loan unnecessary: "I am afraid I forgot to inform you that the exhibition rules would not allow for my Christ to be shown, as it was made too long ago (1849) [...]" (transl.). - Hippolyte Chauchard, then a member of parliament for the Haute-Marne department, wrote to Pierre Durand on 5 December 1866 in support of Corot's request for the loan. Interestingly, he adds that the painting was originally intended for the Musée du Luxembourg and that Corot "cried tears of blood" when it was finally placed in the museum in Langres (La Ferté, 5 December 1866). - The 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris was highly successful for Corot. He showed seven important paintings, received a medal, and was subsequently promoted officer of the Légion d'honneur. - All letters with several pinholes in the lower left corner. Some browning overall with traces of folds.

To an unidentified recipient, stating that the artist cannot visit because his sister, Annette-Octavie Corot Sennegon (1793-1874), and brother-in-law, Laurent-Denis Sennegon, are ill. Corot was hoping to travel to Arras and Douai for "la fete" to be held on 6 July, which may well have been Douai's Fêtes de Gayant, a tradition dating back to 1530, wherein wooden giants are paraded in the streets.

Coiffier, titular advisor of the Imperial University in Napoleonic France, with thanks for a letter from Mainz, discussing the French reorganisation of the Italian school system after the creation of new (often ephemeral) academies, about school budgets, recommending the lowering of taxes for the "Pères des Ecoles Pies", mentioning several names of schools such as the "College Cortone", "College Modegliana", "College de Sienne", "College de Florence" and its director Father del Ricco, the academy of Pisa and its director Sproni, as well as the municipal colleges of Arezzo, and further discussing "Luoghi di Monte" (public debt securities): "Cette considération que j'avais crû pouvoir faire valoir dans cette circonstance ne sera par perdue, et ne mangera par d'être appréciée en d'autres occasions par la Sagesse de S. E. Le Grand Maitre, et du Conseil de l'Université, et surtout pour tacher de diminuer encore La charge des Taxes universitaire, charge qui est très choquante pour les habitudes de ce pays-ci [...]". - "Les difficultés militaires de Napoléon, à partir de 1812-1813, empêchent cependant, le plus souvent, une réelle mise en place de l’institution académique et les recteurs de ces ressorts géographiques sont soumis à des tensions extrêmes" (Jean-François Condette, "'Traitres fatigués' ou élites administratives?", Histoire de l’éducation, 97 [2003], p. 41). Neri Corsini also succeeded in negotiations on behalf of the Accademia della Crusca which took place in Paris between 1812 and 1814 and led to the rescue of the Riccardiana Library. The collection had been auctioned and sold in 1813, was acquired by the municipality of Florence "especially for the use of the Accademia della Crusca", and finally ceded to the Tuscan state two years later. - With traces of old mounting, ink slightly bleeding to versos in some places.

Important letter with ample details on Cortenovis' research on early medieval ivory carvings in Cividale del Friuli, written to an unidentified correspondent upon his return to Udine: "Ieri sul tardi sono ritornato da Cividale, e per tutto il viaggio ho avuto in mente la dolce compagnia di V. S. Rev.mo ed il forzieretto d'Avorio, ed il desiderio di godere un altra volta di quella mi faceva crescere il desiderio di vedere compito il disegno di questo. Il Sig.re Cononico Giorgini, che è il Custode delle Reliquie, si è posto subito all'opera per lavare, e ripulire quegli intagli [...]". Cortenovis speculates about antique origins of certain motives, for example linking intaglios of the mentioned "little cassette of ivory" to figurative offerings of the Saturnalia. In this context he quotes a distich from Martial's Epigrams: "Hos nisi de flava loculos implere moneta / Non decet: argentum vilia ligna ferant" (14, XII, Loculi Eborei). - Minor browning.

Conte Corti verfasste "historisch genaue biographische Romane" (Czeike I, 593), so etwa "Maximilian und Charlotte von Mexiko" (1924). - Rabenlechner, als Gymnasialprofessor in Triest und Wien lebend und 1925 als Regierungsrat in den Ruhestand tretend, war Mitbegründer und Vorsitzender der Wiener Bibliophilengesellschaft, veröffentlichte zahlreiche literaturwissenschaftliche Schriften und trat auch als Herausgeber hervor.

Renowned Swiss-French composer and pianist famed as an interpreter of Wagner and the Romantics. ALS in French 2pp single leaf 5¼" X 8¼" n.p. 25 November 1947. Addressed to "cher Monsieur" American pianist and music school founder John G. Leiser. Very good. Faintly visible triangular 3½" X 3" stain tea at upper left of first page reverse on recto. On his green imprinted Neuilly-sur-Seine France letterhead which address he crosses out Cortot complains about having never received his correspondent's first letter noting in part rough translation "I have lived in Switzerland for two years so it's probable the postmaster where I used to live is very disorganized and neglected to forward your letters. Since you show interest in my projects and my return to the United States I can tell you that I am having talks about touring your big country during the winter of 48-49 where I have dear and faithful friendships. On the other hand concerning my recordings I just made a dozen recordings in England for His Master's Voice. I would be surprised if you couldn't buy them." Eulogy in French for the composer Hector Berlioz (1803-69), whom he considers "the greatest of our musicians", trusting his work to become a rich source of inspiration for young musicians, imagining a bright musical future re-evoking feelings of virtue, noblesse, and infinity, following Berlioz' example: "L'oeuvre de Berlioz, virile, émue, poignante ou chaleureuse, est encore prête à attester de la part qu'elle a prise dans cette métamorphose […] des données traditionnelles de l'art musical. Elle pourrait redevenir pour nos jeunes musiciens […] la source jaillissante où puiser les éléments d'un art accordé de plus près aux évènements démesurés dont ils demeurent encore les témoins curieusement silencieux […] Et one se plaît à imaginer, sous le symbole ‚Berlioz', une musique française de l'avenir, qui dirait à nouveau, à son exemple sinon selon sa formule, la vertu stimulante des puissantes résonances chargées du poids des rythmes altiers, la noblesse émouvante de ces longs déroulements sonores qui, sous sa plume, ont si profondément rêvé l'infini […]". - A few autograph corrections in felt pen. Mais je ne donne aucune lecon, mon temps étant presque entièrement absorbé par mes voyages. Si comme je l'espère je passe quelques semaines à Lausanne au printemps c'est avec grand plaisir que je vous entendrai pour un conseil isolé. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Redakteur: "Den ganzen Sommer hindurch war ich nicht in Leipzig und später fesselten mich Krankheit und dringende Arbeiten an das Haus; dies ist der Grund daß ich wenig Neues erfuhr und Ihnen keine Berichte schicken konnte. Uebrigens habe ich ja bald einen Stellvertreter gefunden. Nicht lieb ist es mir, daß man mich für den Verfasser der von diesem geschriebenen Artikel hält und Sie würden mir einen Gefallen erweisen, wenn Sie gelegentlich bemerkten, daß diese Berichte nicht von dem früheren Correspondenten herrühren [...]". - Corvin-Wiersbitzki stammte aus polnisch-westpreußischem Adel, genoß eine Kadettenerziehung und war mit 18 Jahren Leutnant in einer Mainzer Garnison. Nach frühzeitigem Ausscheiden aus der Armee ließ er sich als Journalist und Gelegenheitsschriftsteller in Leipzig nieder, schloß sich dort liberaldemokratischen und antiklerikalen Kreisen an und führte 1848 die Revolution im Elsaß sowie am Oberrhein an. 1849 wurde er verhaftet, zum Tod verurteilt und schließlich zu sechs Jahren Zuchthaus begnadigt. Nach seiner Entlassung 1855 berichtete er als freier Mitarbeiter für renommierte Blätter wie "Times", "New York Times", "Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung" und Charles Dickens' "Household Words" aus Amerika, England und Deutschland.
