To his housekeeper Maria, informing her of his plans to go the countryside, so that she may pass on the information to his friends when they call: "Comme je vous l'avais dit je pars pour trois jours (je rentrerai peut-être un peu plustôt). Les obsèquenes de Jacques Duclos ont compliqué mon emploi du temps. Je vais déjeuner à la campagne et je reviens directement pour l'enterrement, repartant aussitôt après. Je ne prends pas Raymond, ce serait trop compliqué [...]. Si les amis qui téléphoneront vous demandent où je suis, combien de temps, dites que tout ce que vous savez l'est que je rentre Vendredi [...]. Ne vous tracassez pas de moi. Je vous laisse une chemise à laver, et une cravate avec une tache à en enlever [...]". - The letter can be dated with respect to the death of the communist politician Jacques Duclos on 25 April 1975, whose funeral Aragon announces to attend. - Traces of folds. To the journalist and literary critic André Rousseaux (1896-1973) about a discussion of Victor Hugo's poem "Booz endormi" by Charles Péguy (1873-1914), an admirer of Hugo's, considering current poetic criticism in the Revue Critique to be in desperate need of some humor: "Péguy a discuté le coup de Jerimadeth... et je sais bien qu'il aimait Hugo, et qu'il le défendait [...] j'ai voulu simplement dire que le pont-aux-ânes inventé par la Revue Critique ne relève pas de la discussion sérieuse, mais qu'il fallait lui opposer ce vieil humour des familles dont la critique poétique est de nos jours si étrangement démunie [...]". - Further about travelling to Switzerland shortly, having missed the writer Georges Bernanos (1888-1948), who recently visited a mutual friend along with the priest and screenwriter Raymond Léopold Bruckberger (1907-98), mentioning his wife Elsa and himself fleeing Paris due to the Prix Goncourt, and considering a stay in occupied Germany more agreeable than witnessing the award ceremony. Aragon goes on to complain about the silence of the critics regarding his book "Servitude et Grandeur des Français" published three months earlier, and concludes with his intention of allaying his anger by consuming Swiss milk, chocolate, and nescafé, having lost much weight since the war: "Nous partons tout à l'heure pour la Suisse [...] Je n'ai pas vu Bernanos, signalé dans ces pages par les hebdomadaires, et qui est allé avant-hier avec le R. P. Brückberger chez une dame chez qui j'ai été moi hier [...] Elsa et moi avions fui Paris rendre invivable par le Goncourt. Un séjour en Allemagne occupée, zone franque, vaudrait mieux que cette mention peu honorable [...] A part ça, je vous signale le silence croissant fait autour de ce que je publie. 4 articles [...] pour Servitude et Grandeur après trois mois d'envoi du S. P. Pas mal, hein? Parlons de la glorie. Mais comme je pèse 62 kgs, pour 75 avant guerre et 69 en septembre, je vais passer ma bile sur le lait, le chocolat, le nescafé de Suisse [...]".

Article in French entitled "Le 7 Novembre est bien la fête des Sans-Dieu" ("November 7 is effectively the Feast of the Godless") for the atheist magazine "La Lutte antireligieuse et sociale", organ of Proletarian Free Thought (better known as "Organisation des travailleurs sans dieu"). Louis Aragon spent a year in Moscow from early 1932 after breaking with the Surrealist movement, particularly André Breton. During this time he witnessed the enormous parade on Red Square for Revolution Day on October 15. In the article Aragon describes the event with a focus on anti-religious messages, contrasting the "byzantine" Saint Basil's Cathedral with modern architecture, engineering, and technological progress such as the planned Moscow Canal, achieved by communism. The military parade was followed by a parade of workers with their tools, products and anti-religious posters, for "this crowd has no God anymore, this immense crowd has no God anymore". And yet there are new idols, standing out against the old ones: "What an extraordinary figure made above this crowd, where you find the best shock workers of socialist construction, the best pioneers from the kolkhozes and sovkhozes, the baroque cathedral, like a phantom of the past!" In closing, Aragon enthusiastically describes the accompanying air show, likening the aircrafts to symbols of socialist progress, in comparison with the symbols of tsarism and orthodoxy: "And in passing with their straight wings they seem to deride the contorted golden eagles of the Tsars, the crosses with two crossbeams of the old church, where today only the voices of Marx and Lenin are heard, of the old church that is chained to the triumphal chariot of the Proletariat". - Louis Aragon was loyal to Moscow and Stalinism well into the 1960s, even defending the Moscow Trials in articles. When the scope of Stalinist terror was finally revealed, he distanced himself from Soviet communism and condemned its past and continuing crimes. - Several minor tears, somewhat dusty and smudged. 12mo. ½ p. In French. Thanking the poet Léon-Paul Fargue for defending Aragon and his friends "against people who are a bit too quick with their tongues and quills". Aragon wrote this charming note with the heading "as soon as possible" after learning of Fargue's "courageous" act from the librarian Adrienne Monnier. With ironic hyperbole, Aragon apologizes for finding "neither clever phrases nor commonplaces", explaining that Fargue's attitude touches him so deeply that he is "reduced to" silence. The note in full: "Je ne veux pas, Monsieur, m'en remettre au hazard d'un rencontre pour vous remercier. Je viens d'apprendre de Mademoiselle Monnier de quelle façon courageuse vous nous avez défendus mes amis et moi contre des gens un peu trop prompts de la langue et de la plume. Excusez-moi de ne trouver pour vous en exprimer [!] ma gratitude ni pharses habiles ni lieux communs. Votre attitude me touche mieux et ne me laisse qu'à me taire". - Louis Aragon and Léon-Paul Fargue were among the numerous important customers and friends of the legendary book dealer Adrienne Monnier. The dispute alluded to in the note might well be the famous rupture between the Dadaists with their leader Tristan Tzara and the new Surrealist group centering on André Breton and Louis Aragon. - Two minor stains. [...] Everything military is suspect, the pseudo-peaceful language which here is used against the army of peace, against the army of workers and peasants, and which he unreservedly assimilates to the army of war to that of capital, it is in fact the very language of the 'comrade anarchist, traitor to the proletariat'" (transl.).

Kennedy saw a unique rocking chair at the office of his physician Dr. Janet Travell who recommended it to aid his chronic back pain; his father gave him an identical copy which he brought to the Oval Office; White House upholsterer modified the design adding plush upholstered arms and back support; images of JFK seated in them he owned a number of them have made them almost as much a JFK emblem as Lincoln's stovepipe hat and FDR's cigarette holder and at auction original JFK-owned White House rockers have fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars. Signed First Day Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled in Boston MA 1964 May 29. Fine. Two five-cent commemorative JFK "And the Glow from That Fire Can Truly Light the World" stamps at upper right boldly cancelled with "First Day of Issue" noted. Decorative cachet at left depicts a line drawing of Arata's famous rocker. No distracting recipient's name/address present. At center large and bold in black ballpoint the famed upholsterer inscribes and signs: "My Best Wishes / to Paul Johnston / Larry Arata / 11/14/77." Most unusual and seldom seen. unknown

To the author of an unidentified treatise on military education entitled "Trésor fécond de principes, de vues, de sentimens incontestables", praising it in the highest terms and commenting on the text: "Je Vous restitue Monsieur, avec regrét, n'ayant put m'en pouvoir ici, et reconnaissance Votre incomparable Ouvrage [...], ou tout ce qui était à dire est exposé avec une sagacité, une propriété de termes, une facilité qui le met à la portée d'un chacun et électrise en même tems la raison et le cœur de quiconque le lit [...]". - Luigi Giuseppe Arbario di Gattinara originally envisaged an army career, having reached the rank of a captain of the infantry when he was convinced by the Sardinian minister of external affairs to accept a diplomatic mission to Naples in 1782. In 1786 he was named ambassador to the Imperial court in Vienna, where he served until 1794. After his return to Turin, the Marquess served as councillor to the Sardinian King and took public office in the Napoleonic Italian Republic in 1802. He assisted in the coronation of Napoleon as King of Italy in 1805, whose state council he joined. In 1809 Napoleon named Arbario di Gattinara senator of the Kingdom of Italy. During the restoration, the Marquess withdrew to private life, dedicating his time to political and economical studies. - On stationery with engraved letterhead "Le Senteur Comte de Breme, Grand Dignitaire de l'Ordre de la Couronne de Fer". With recipient's or collector's note in ink. Well preserved.

Vertrauliche Briefe an einen namentlich nicht genannten Freund und Gönner über literarische, finanzielle und soziale Belange: "Hr. [Moritz] Saphir hat mein gutes schwunghaftes Gedicht nicht abgedruckt" (undat. Brief). - "Mit banger Seele wende ich mich bittend an Ihre Güte und Fürsprache, als an ein Wesen, dem ich alles Gute, Edle und Menschliche zumuthe. Mein Ludwig ist in einer höchst drückenden Lage. Er soll ausziehen, ohne die Miethe und Alles was daran hängt bezahlen zu können. Er mußte sich, da man ihm eine Hauptmanns Charge gab, equirieren, es beträgt 80 f CM. und er hat die Mittel nicht, da ihm an der Gage so viel abgezogen wird. Mein Herz blutet wahrlich, daß ich seine Bedrängnisse sehen muß, ohne ihm helfen zu können. IV. 1848, hierzu auch das Antwortschreiben). - Schon in jungen Jahren literarisch tätig geworden, wurde 1834 in Lemberg das von der Fünfzehnjährigen zu Ehren des Geburtstags von Kaiser Franz I. gedichtete Lustspiel "Östreichs Doppeladler" aufgeführt, im Jahr darauf erschienen die "Lenzblüthen", eine König Ludwig I. von Bayern gewidmete Gedichtsammlung. Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters nach Wien gezogen, schrieb Emma von Arbter mehrere Novellen und Erzählungen, die im Wiener Journal "Humorist" veröffentlicht wurden.

Queen Anne's physician in ordinary 1705-14 is better known as a close friend of Swift Gay and Pope with whom he founded the Scriblerus Club; among his many political pamphlets was "The History of John Bull" 1727 which created the stereotype of John Bull the typical Englishman. Signature and salutation clipped from an ALS 1p 4�" X 2�" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Typical light brown ink. Reads in full: "and I remain / My Dear Sir / Your very trusty / Arbuthnot" on the recto while the verso bears about 19 words in his hand -- obviously an excerpt from a letter. A most attractive example and rather uncommon. unknown

ARCET (Félix d’) chimiste français (1807-1846)
C’est à ce titre, qu’il se rend sous la direction du Dr Pariset en Égypte où sévit une épidémie de peste. Il quitte la chimie à 30 ans, est reçu externe des hôpitaux puis docteur en médecine en 1842.
Il part pour le Brésil avec pour mission d’y fonder une grande fabrique de produits chimiques et l’enseignement de la chimie. Il meurt accidentellement le 18 décembre 1846 à Rio de Janeiro des suites de ses brûlures, sa lampe à gaz imprudemment remplie près de son lit ayant explosée. Lettre autographe signée au comte Honoré Collin de Sussy. Rio de Janeiro, 29 juillet 1846. 3 pp. in-8. Adresse et marques postales. Il est en mission à Rio de Janeiro, quelques mois avant sa mort accidentelle. Il informe son « cher Honoré » de ses projets. « le bon St Guignon à l’air de s’en aller, il s’en va même tout à fait » précise t-il à son ami, « un grand changement s’est opéré dans ma vie et je crois que je vais fonder ici une grande entreprise et produits chimiques, vous savez que je suis habitué à ses travaux, j’espère les mener à bien... ».

A pamphlet concerning a gilding furnace to which reference is made is likely to be the "Description d'un petit fourneau à coupelle, au moyen duquel on peu faire les essays des matières d'or et d'argent", which d'Arcet published in 1813.

Ich habe mich bei Ansicht der quest: Stellen durchaus nicht orientiren können, flgl. ist eine überdachte Revision des alten Mscpts nöthig; dies aber ist verpackt, u. die Kuffer [d. i. Koffer] auf dem Wagen überkettet. Wol[l]te ich nun auch meine auf morgen früh angesetzte Reise verschieben, so fehlt es mir doch ganz an der zur Arbeit erforderlichen Geistesruhe. Ich muß es also bis Gotha ersparen. Wollen Sie mir schreiben, in Ansehung der im letzten Bande viel[l]eicht aufgestoßenen Zweifel, so bitte ich den Brief nach Strasburg an die Academische Buchhandlung zu adressiren [...]". - Mit kleinem Ausriß durch Siegelbruch (keine Textberührung).

1 S. Folio (223:282 mm). Albumblatt mit gedruckter Bordüre, gedr. Fußzeile "Beitrag zum Selbstschriftenalbum 'Deutschlands Zukunft'" und gedr. Formular für biograph. Daten, aufgezogen auf einen Bogen Pergamentpapier (ca. 330:344 mm). "Nicht durch Phrasen, nicht durch Trauer über die Vergangenheit werden wir - Deutschen - uns eine bessere Zukunft im Kreise der Volker sichern, sondern dadurch, daß wir der modernen Technik, dem Techniker die Wertschätzung zukommen lassen, welche beide heute im wirschaftlichen, staatlichem Leben verdienen [...]". Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). - Georg von Arco, Geschäftsführer von Telefunken, wirkte federführend an der Entwicklung leistungsstarker Sendeanlagen mit und war maßgeblich an Entwicklung der Hochfrequenztechnik in Deutschland beteiligt. 1897 errichtete er auf dem Glockenturm der Sacrower Heilandskirche die erste deutsche Antennenanlage für drahtlose Telegraphie. - Mit kleinem Eckausriss. Nomination de Premier adjoint au maire de Saint-Ambroix
Bel imprimé de la Préfecture du Gard portant nomination de Rédarès Jean-Alexis, premier adjoint au maire de St-Ambroix. 20 septembre 1830. Signé par le Préfet Charles-Aristide de La Coste. Jean-Alexis REDARÈS était notaire royal de Saint-Ambroix avant la Révolution, puis notaire à Pont-Cèze (nom révolutionnaire de Saint-Abroix), enfin officier municipal de la municipalité de Saint-Ambroix (ou Pont-Cèze). On trouve sa signature sur de nombreux documents de la période révolutionnaire. Il semble avoir joué un rôle important lors de l’affaire très sérieuse du Camp de Jalès. Attractive vintage half-length portrait of Arden taken for the 1959 film "Anatomy of a Murder" showing her in dress and white gloves holding a dog on her lap. At right of center she inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint: "Warmest Wishes / to Donald Burnell / from / Eve Arden." Contrast fair only. unknown
