An Graf Rudolph von Wrbna (1761-1823), den Präsidenten der Einlösungs- und Tilgungsdeputation, mit einer Ablehnung des Vorschlags, die Schreibweise für "Dwa Sglatych" und "Dwa Kynskich" auf Einlösescheinen zu korrigieren, da dies zu allzu vielen Komplikationen führen würde: "Ich halte die Verbesserung dieses übersehenen Druckfehlers selbst gegenwärtig nicht mehr räthlich, sogar bedenklich; denn nur Sprachgelehrten, deren Anzahl so gering ist, und welche sich selbst verbescheiden, daß es ein Uebersehen ist, konnte es auffallen [...] Eine Abänderung mit oder ohne öffentliche Kundmachung würde [...] da schon 25 bis 30 Millionen Gulden Einlöse-Scheine dieser Kathegorie im Umlauf gesetzt sind, Anlaß zur Ausstellung der späten Erkenntniß dieses Fehlers, und zu manchen, jezt so allgemein sich erlaubenden Witzeleien, geben [...]". - Infolge eines Finanzplans wurden 1811 Einlösescheine als neues Papiergeld ausgegeben, dieses stand unter der Verwaltung der Einlösungs- und Tilgungsdeputation, worauf der Staatskredit zum größten Teil beruhte. Die abgewertete neue "W. W." (Wiener Währung) wurde im Volksmund zu "Wallis' Worte" verballhornt. - Leicht fingerfleckig.

Persönliches Schreiben an seine Schwägerin Paula (Pauline) nach einem dreiwöchigen Aufenthalt bei ihr und seinem Bruder Gustav, über Freunde und Familie, besonders mit aktuellen Nachrichten zu seinen Kindern und seiner Ehefrau, über Pläne für Besuche und Reisen sowie zur Neubesetzung des Präsidentenamts des Obersten Gerichtssenats: "Meine Alte! ist mir als die Alte zurückgekommen! Unverbessert, Sorgenlos, Unterhaltungssüchtig, Gefräßig wie immer! Es ist entschieden, daß sie nach Carlsbaad im July u. August gehen will, ich werde ihr vorausgehen [...] Alphons schreibt in seinem dicken Briefe daß es ihm als Soldat vortrefflich ergehe, aber als Ehemann findet er 1000 G[...] und zweifelt selbst daß ihm die Pflichten während der Exerzierzeit im August erlauben werden, in das so gefürchtete Joch sich spannen zu können - mit einem Worte, der glücklich arme Teufel ist unausstehlich mit allen seinen Sorgen ohne Noth - Heute vor einem Jahre bey Solferino, hatte er bestimmt mehr Muth als eben itzt, wo Rosen statt Granaten um seinem Haupte sich winden können [...]". - Alphons Graf Wimpffen sollte sich im Oktober des Jahres mit Karoline Gräfin Lamberg vermählen, einer Tochter von Feldmarschall-Lieutenant Franz Grafen Lamberg. Sechs Jahre darauf verstarb er an den Folgen einer in der Schlacht bei Skalitz zugezogenen Verwundung.

Pöltl, Kommandant der Flotte "Carolina" in Gibraltar, und mit der Bitte, dem Prinzen und der Prinzessin aus dem Hause Hohenzollern seine Aufwartung zu machen, sollte der Adressat nach Braunschweig reisen: "J'ai été charmé d'apprendre que Vous avés fait le voyage et que Madame et Albert se portent également bien - ; je Vous supplie de leurs présenter mes amitiés. Je viens de recevoir la nouvelle officielle que le Lt. Colonel Pöltel Commandant la Flotte Caroline était mort le 12 Juin à Gibraltar. Le bâtiment a passé le Faro le 26 du mai passé et paraitera en conséquence bientôt à Trieste. Il a perdu dans son retour 26 hommes et il parait qu'il reconduit toute sa cargaison. Voilà donc une expédition manquée. Mais en fait de Commerce comme dans la guerre il faut risquer [...]". - Wohlerhalten, leicht staubrandig.

An einen Herrn Doktor bezüglich der Bahnstrecke zwischen Bozen und Meran: "Durch eine freundliche Mittheilung meines Collegen, Herrn Sectionsraths Baron Lilienau, in Kenntnis, dass Euer Hochwohlgeboren von dem Fortgange der Verhandlung wegen Sicherstellung der Bozen-Meraner Bahn Ihre geschätzten Anträge in Bezug auf die einschlägige Budgetpost abhängig machen wollen, erlaube ich mir - da mir der Versuch persönlicher Rücksprache morgen in Folge unaufschieblicher Amtspflichten unausführbar geworden ist - ganz ergebenst zu berichten, dass die Aussichten auf das Zustandekommen des fraglichen Bahnbaues noch im diesjährigen Sommer, wonach die Bahn-Eröffnung im Sommer 1881 erfolgen würde, sich in den letzten Tagen wesentlich geklärt haben [...]". Die Bahnstrecke zwischen Bozen und Meran wurde schließlich am 4. Oktober 1881 eingeweiht. - Wittek übernahm Anfang der 1870er Jahre die neu geschaffene Eisenbahnsektion im Handelsministerium und wurde 1897 Eisenbahnminister; 1899/1900 war er vorübergehend auch Ministerpräsident. Nach einem Misstrauensvotum des Reichsrats von seinem Amt zurückgetreten, war er Mitglied des Herrenhauses und gehörte dem Abgeordnetenhaus an; von 1922 bis 1926 stand er als Präsident an der Spitze der Bankenkommission. - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Auf meine damals gemachte Bemerkung, was denn die Anwohner der Hauptlinie der Elisabeth-Bahn zu dieser Neuerung sagen würden, falls sie ernstlich ins Auge gefasst werden sollten, wurde mir die Antwort, dass diese Interessenten keinerlei Nachtheil erleiden sollen, da ihnen durch Einlegen geeigneter Personenzüge und dem 'Tagesschnellzug' alle bisherigen Anschlussverbindungen erhalten bleiben [...]".

An seinen Schwager Ferdinand Graf Rothkirch-Panthen (geb. 1814), bezüglich der Erkrankung seiner Frau Leonie (Leonhardine, geb. 1820) an einer "unbändigen caccarella": "Ich glaube also nicht, dass wir Morgen nach Baden kommen werden um so weniger als morgen das Kriegsministerium Budget in unserer Delegation zur Verhandlung gelangt und die Redelust unserer Herrn Delegirten noch nicht ermattet ist [...]". Sie würden jedoch am nächsten Tag den Zug um 4 oder 5 Uhr nach Baden nehmen. Weiters berichtet er über Berufliches und Geschäftliches: "Meine Schifffahrtsgesellschaft will mich zum Präsidenten ernennen und schreitet befriedigend vorwärts [...]. Ich zeichne 1000 Aktien [...] Solltest du dich betheiligen wollen, so mußt du es mir sagen oder schreiben [...]". - Wüllerstorf-Urbair befehligte die berühmte Weltumseglung der Fregatte Novara (1857-59). - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Er erkläre sich mit "Titel sowohl als mit der Reduktion der Karten auf kleineres Maaß, vollkommen einverstanden [...]". Mit Bezug auf einen Artikel in der "Allgemeinen Zeitung" teilt er dem Adressaten mit, dass ihm ein Herr Breisach, Vorstand der Marinekanzlei, die Mitteilung machte, "dass nämlich einige Akademie Mitglieder der Voraussetzung Raum geben ich sey der Autor gewesen. Genug an dem. Erlauben Sie mir dass ich die ganze Sache nunmehr ad acta lege und auch mit Scherzer nicht weiter spreche, der darüber seine eigene Meinung behalten mag; die ist ja endlich frei für Jedermann; das sind auch Privatsachen und Ansichten um die ich mich um so weniger bekümmern will, als ich endlich nicht weiß, ob Dr. Scherzer der Autor sey [...]". - Wüllerstorf-Urbair befehligte die berühmte Weltumseglung der Fregatte Novara (1857-59).

Wülli grüßt Dich und geht eben bei strömendem Regen in die Stadt um zu sehen was er thun kann u. was gerathen ist zu thun. Es ist ihm sehr unangenehm ohne Vollmacht zu handeln, ich meine aber daß wir uns Alle Vorwürfe machen mußten wenn Lothar [L. Graf Rothkirch-Panthen, 1822-1903, Bruder des Adressaten] zu Schaden käme, weil man nicht positiv autorisirt ist zu handeln. [...] Ich begreife nicht daß Lothar keine Antwort auf unser Telegramm gab, dies ist ein Beweis daß er es in Bologna nicht erhielt [...] Frau Trost sendet Dir eine Cigar[r]en Tasche welche Wüll in Wien vergaß, sei so gut sie mitzunehmen! 36 pp. on 36 ff. 4to. Complete typescript of the piece "Les Cenci", with some corrections. Artaud has signed twice, at the top of the first page and on the last page; some small corrections written in black ink do not seem to be from his hand. "A beautiful black masterpiece is the only legacy that is still important to leave [...] For I, the old count Cenci [...], it happens more than once in my dreams to identify myself with destiny" (transl.). Artaud finished Cenci's text, a "tragedy in four acts and ten paintings on a theme of Stendhal and Shelley", at the beginning of February 1935. The dress rehearsal took place on 6 May 1935 at the Théâtre des Folies-Wagram. The play left the stage after 17 performances. Artaud played the main role, that of Count Cenci, and directed the production according to the principles set out in Le Théâtre et son double. Balthus designed the sets and costumes. The critics were divided; the play was notably praised by Pierre-Jean Jouve: "The will of Antonin Artaud joining that of Balthus is everywhere: the extreme points appear in the emphatic and dark play of Artaud himself, in the incandescent beauty and the childish, wild action of Iya Abdy". An invitation card is attached to a gala performance of Cenci at the Théâtre des Folies-Wagram on 7 May 1935. - Small damage to edges on some sheets; on browned paper.

Moreover, one must remember that the portrait is not accompanied by the name, and that if it is useless for the volume, it is indispensable for the newspaper". Appealing collection of drafts for Carco's popular "Heures d'Égypte" (Avignon, 1940), dedicated to his impressions of Egypt and his travel memoirs. They comprise three chapters of the "Heures", beginning with "L'Égypte est une présence", including a brief description of the multi-storey palace of the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette-Pacha, omitted from the published version, praising its bridges, boats, and sails, which are said to be of a blinding whiteness in sharp contrast with the ocean's blue: "Son chateau de plusieurs étages, ses ponts, ses embarcations, ses prélarts d'une blancheur éblouissante contrastaient avec l'azur fonci des flots bleus [...]". - Accompanying these are two drafts entitled "Sortilèges", renamed "Une histoire de Momie" in the print edition, as well as one of the chapter "Promenade au Mouski", the latter discussing the French writer Gérard de Nerval and his stay in Egypt: "Nerval must have wandered under these signs [...] until 1906, control registers were not required by the Egyptian police and the only information about Gérard's travels is contained in Gautier's [i. e. the French poet and Nerval's travel companion Théophile Gautier] lovely book - full of love, money and light - which the poet left behind during his sojourn in the country. Nerval had been planning to leave for years since the dark winter night of 1841 when, responding to a friend he thought strange, he exclaimed that he was not going home, but was heading East" (transl.). - With numerous erasures and corrections in ink as well as in blue and red crayon. Exhausted by the treatment, Cocteau begins the letter by apologizing to his friend: "Pardonne moi d'écrire si mal & des choses si bêtes - c'est le premier [sic!] lettre permis par le médecin et je n'ai aucune force. Je ne peux encore aller du lit à la table, mais mon chéri, mon pauvre enfant merveilleux tu ne comprendras donc jamais que ‘mes silences' sur tes poèmes n'ont aucune signification de blâme - que la moindre boucle d'une de tes lettres a déjà du prestige pour mes yeux et mon coeur - que je t'approuve d'avance comme faisaient les admiratrices de Sarah Bernhardt [...] Depuis avant-hier je suis hors de danger - alors le médecin ne m'écoute même plus et me laisse avec une tulle de nerfs autour du poumon gauche et des aigrettes atroces [...] Très heureux d'Hugnet libéré du service [...] Mon Max je t'aime. Charming reflections, in French, on the essence of poetry: "La poësie si j'osais la définir serait l'élégance même. est donc normal qu'elle joue de la plus petite chose à la plus grande - mais grande ou petite la chose devient souvient invisible lorsque la poësie l'habite [...] faut croire que ce monde pris naissance dans un certain désordre qui devint notre ordre et en quelques sorte notre style personnel [...] J'ai remarqué que je prenais le style du personnage que je joue, dans la vie, non pas que je me pousse dans ce sens pour me donner le réalisme qui est à la base de toute poësie. Unique collection of rare autograph documents by four prominent writers in Hebrew and Zionist leaders, the most extensive being an autograph manuscript signed by the children's author and poet Levin Kipnis (1894-1990), winner of the 1978 Israel prize. Originating from the early days of his career, it comprises a series of 5 poems, a prose work, and an epilogue, the final poem with an accompanying ink sketch of a seascape and a drowning person. With publisher's ink stamp (19 Nov. 1909). - Autograph postcard signed by Alter Druyanov (1870-1938) in Odessa to the poet Jacob Cahan in Geneva about his lyric work. With printed letterhead (1912). At that time, Druyanov was the editor of the weekly news bulletin "Haolam", founded in 1907 by Nahum Sokolow as the central organ of the World Zionist Organisation, published in Berlin in its first year. However, since the Zionist Executive considered it a burden on the budget and Western Europe did not appear to be the best place to publish a Hebrew journal, it was moved to Vilna in 1908, where it became the organ of the Zionist Organization in Russia, under the editorship of Alter Druyanow. In the spring of 1912, upon the initiative of Menachem Ussishkin, "Haolam" was moved to Odessa and continued its publication there until the outbreak of World War I. - ALS by the Zionist leader and writer Nahum Sokolow (1859-1936), pioneer of Hebrew journalism, to the head of the Jewish National Fund Menachem Ussishkin, introducing his friend H. Ruiper (Pisa, 19 Feb. 1933). - ALS by the educator and founder of the first Hebrew College for Teachers David Yellin (1864-1941) to a "dear friend". 8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. On stationery with black border. In French, to Gabriel Mourey on his translation of Ruskin's "Treasures of the Kings" and his love of flowers thwarted by asthma. The letter refers to the proofs of the last part of his translation of John Ruskin's "Treasures" published on 15 May 1905 in the magazine "Les Arts de la Vie", edited by Mourey. Proust thanks him for having "taken the trouble and found the time, in the midst of all your occupations, to return this manuscript to me. I immediately corrected the proofs, which were absurd because of the fault not of your protests but of my typist", and he sent them back to Mr. Davoust. "I did not confuse your handwriting with my own (unfortunately for me there is no confusion possible!) you restored a paragraph number that I had forgotten. So you correct this in the English text! That is wonderful! This way of conducting our poor little instruments, with an open book, on the orchestral score, amazes me." He recommends not to correct the word 'chanter': "It's not a mistake, I put 'chanter' once and 'château' the other time. There is 'cantel' and 'castel' in the text and I have thus preserved, even reinforced, the alliteration. I know that 'chantau' is not very popular, but neither is 'cantel'. It is the same word and the same derivation." Finally, he evokes Mourey's "Verger" (Orchard) "that undoubtedly the spring dews and Japanese of these flowers that I loved so much and that I can no longer approach since they give me terrible asthma attacks, punishment for having loved them too much, which in my case takes on something even more mythological than pathological, and from which I would easily extract, it seems to me, the legend of a Nemesis hidden in the starry heart of the apple trees, who forbids to overstep the normal limit of admiration and desire towards them and stops in front of their flowers the indiscreet lover in a ridiculous sternutation, which, if I had not suffered so much, would seem to me, in some metamorphosis, directly translated from Latin" (transl.). - Slight damage to edges and centerfold, otherwise in fine condition.

1 p. on bifolium. 156 x 203 mm. In German. To Heinrich Mann, proposing he meet Mimi Ederer, who - according to Werfel - has read and admires Mann's books and would like to meet him in person. The letter dates from the last day of 1916, while Werfel was on a short leave in Prague ("nur auf kurzen Urlaub in Europa") during his war service on the Russian front. - Werfel's first book of poems was published in 1911, and soon after that he became member of the Prague circle of German-speaking Jewish writers, whose members included Franz Kafka, Max Brod, and Egon Erwin Kisch. In 1912 Werfel moved to Germany, where he established friendships with the most eminent German-speaking writers and intellectuals; his relationship to Heinrich Mann probably also dates from this point. During World War I he served as telephone operator in the Austro-Hungarian army on the Russian front. After the War he settled in Vienna, where published his novels and became one of the most prominent and best-selling authors of his time. His masterpiece "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh" appeared in 1933, based on the true events of the Armenian Genocide by the Turks during World War I. After the "Anschluss", the German annexation of Austria in 1938, he was forced into exile, first to France and finally across the Pyrenees and to the United States, together with Heinrich Mann and other refugees. He died in Los Angeles in 1945. - Mimi Ederer is mentioned in Grete Fischer's autobiography as her handsome classmate in secondary school in Prague. Grete Fischer (1893-1977) was an emigré writer in the UK, and during her early years in Prage was a close friend of Franz Werfel and Egon Erwin Kisch (the latter also knew Mimi Ederer and mentions her in his correspondence with his family). - In fine condition. Si vous avez jeté un coup d'oeil sur les partitions vous vous serez apperçu (car votre regard sait entendre) que les années écoulées ne m'ont pas rendu plus mauvais musicien qu'auparavant, et maintenant je désirerais que ces lignes puissent vous dire avec plénitude aussi, combien je suis resté fidèlement attaché au souvenir de ceux qui ont été bons et bienveillans pour moi, parmi lesquels vous me permettrez de vous réserver une place particulière, - quelque chose comme celle du maître de chapelle dans l'orchestre, car plus d'une fois vous avez pris le soin d'indiquer la mesure et les nuances à plusieurs des exécutans lesquels ne s'en étaient pas bien avisés. Cmbien je serais heureux de reprendre avec vous quelques-unes de ces conversations où j'avais toujours un double profit d'agrément et d'instruction à faire! Peut-être viendrez-vous pourtant à quelque beau jour dans ces contrées, et si j'avais une faveur à demander à Madame la Grande Duchesse ce serait celle de vous inviter à venir passer l'inspection de notre nouveau ménage musical de Weymar. 8vo. 2½ page on bifolium. Pretty letter to Baron James de Rothschild about wine. "Your magnificent spirits - especially the incomparable Segestano - cannot fail to comfort my foolish mind. Allow me to thank you for this gift with all the obliging and affectionate feelings you know me with and for which it will always be a pleasure to give you all the musical and personal proofs". Obliged to leave the next day, he regrets being unable to "come and pay my sincere respects and tributes to Madame la Baronne de Rothschild, in her Versailles in Boulogne. In spite of this setback, I will not keep less vivid memories of her gracious hospitality" (translated from the French original). - Counter-leaf slightly spotty.

A deeply affectionate letter to Mrs. Verkenius, the widow of the District Court Councillor Erich Verkenius (1776-1841), founder and patron of the Lower Rhenish Music Festival, and to their daughter Sibylla as well as to their son-in-law, the banker Ignatz Seydlitz (1803-70), at whose house Mendelssohn had spent the night during the first choral festival of the German-Flemish Sängerbund, which had taken place in Cologne on June 14th and 15th, directed by himself and Franz Weber: "Dear Mr. Seydlitz and dear Mrs. Verkenius - for in fact I would like to address this letter to all three of you - I am happily returned and have found all my family safe and sound, thank God. And now I feel as though I needed quickly to return to Malzbüchel no. 4 [the Seydlitzes' address] and say something about thanks and never forgetting - which would probably sound quite as ungraceful as these lines read, but would be meant no less earnestly and sincerely. Of course you are already aware of everything I am trying to say; you know that a reception such as the one I just enjoyed at your house, and everything that was mentioned again of the present and the past, and, in brief, that lasting, unchangeable friendship is and always will be the finest, dearest and best thing in the world, and that you thus have beatified for me these just-spent days into true feasts. This is what I wished to thank you for! There have been but few hours since I parted with you that I did not do so in spirit […] (transl.)".
