Auf seinen Rath bemühe ich Sie, u. bitte mit erster Gelegenheit ihm die Briefchen zukommen zu laßen. Ich hoffe, sie treffen ihn noch in Hamburg wo ich ihm dann seine Wünsche besser erfüllen kann, wenigstens schneller, als in London [...]". - Hildenhagen war im Jahr 1849 Mitglied der Zweiten Kammer des Preußischen Landtages. Er wurde später wegen seiner politischen Tätigkeit während der Revolution als Pfarrer entlassen wurde, lebte danach in Halle als Privatgelehrter und Agent der "Gothaer Feuerversicherungs- und Lebensversicherungsbank". - Mit Sammlervermerk in Bleistift.

Schultze oder des Bibliothekars Ludolf Krehl: "Ihr soeben empfangenes liebes Schreiben war mir als ein Zeichen der Fortdauer Ihrer freundschaftlichen Gesinnung um so willkommener, als ich Ihren werthen persönlichen Besuch so lange entbehrt hatte. Wäre ich in diesen letzten Jahren einmal auch nur in die Nähe von Colmnitz gekommen, so hätte ich sie dort gesehen. Aber ich war seitdem auch selbst nicht einmal in Mohorn, wo wir noch ein theures Grab haben [...] Den frohen und betrübten Ereignissen an Ihrem Heerde bin ich auch aus der Ferne stets theilnehmend gefolgt. Ihren Herrn Vater treffe ich von Zeit zu Zeit auf unserer Promenade [...] daß sie nun eine Jahrespostille, statt einzelner Predigten, zum Druck vorbereiten, finde ich practisch [...]". - Hölemann war von 1853 bis 1867 ao. Cröckersche Buchhandlung, die Gesetz-Sammlung für das Großherzogthum Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach zu dem dagegebenen Preiße von 7 rthl. 2 gr. nebst der Rechnung darüber, für deren Berichtigung ich sodann sofort Sorge tragen werde, an die Fürstl. Regierung womöglich mit umgehender Post einzusenden [...]". - Hönniger trat in den Staatsdienst des Fürstentums Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ein und war nach 1836 Kommissionssekretär bei der Regierung. 1848/49 gehörte er der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung für den Wahlkreis Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt an. - Mit eh. Ehrenhafte Erklärung mit Ablehnung und Aufgabe mehrerer Kandidaturen auf verschiedene Posten zu Gunsten anderen Kandidaten, des Advokaten Bruno Segnitz aus Kamenz, des Gerichtsdirektors in Wilsdruff Ludwig Robert Hennig (geb. ca. 1815) und des Schriftsetzers in der Römplerschen Druckerei in Dresden Friedrich L. Grille, um "Zersplitterung der Stimmen" zu vermeiden: "Die Candidatur in Großenhain, welche zu übernehmen ich von dort aus aufgefordert worden war, hatte ich bereits zu Gunsten des vom dortigen Vaterlandsvereine aufgestellten Hrn. Advokaten Segnitz bestimmt abgelehnt, als der Central-Wahlausschuß, der dies noch nicht wissen konnte, am 3. December diese Candidatur mir, die für Mohorn Hrn. Gerichtsdirector Hennig in Willsdruff zuwies [...]". - Köchly wurde infolge seiner Tätigkeit für die Reorganisation des Schulwesens im Dezember 1848 zusammen mit vier anderen Fachleuten mit der Ausarbeitung eines Entwurfs zu einem allgemeinen Schulgesetz für das Königreich Sachsen beauftragt, im Februar des Folgejahres in die sächsische Zweite Kammer gewählt und beteiligte sich am Dresdner Maiaufstand. - Beiliegend ein alter Sammlungsumschlag.

Zum Ablauf eines über mehrere Jahre sich ziehenden Verfahrens betreffend eine Beschwerde über eine Hebamme und einen Geburtshelfer durch einen Arzt aus Dresden namens Fuhrmann. Die zuerst anonyme Anschuldigung sei als Verleumdung entlarvt, Fuhrmann als Verfasser ermittelt und zu einer Strafe verurteilt worden. Dieser hingegen habe darauf verwiesen, dass nicht das Justizministerium, sondern das Stadtgericht in Dresden zuständig sei: "Aus der Fassung der Bekanntmachung des Hrn. D. Fuhrmann zu Dresden in der Beylage zur Leipz. Zeitung vom 11ten Februar d. J. kann über meine Theilnahme an jener Angelegenheit Mißverständniß entstehn. Ich sehe mich daher veranlaßt, den Vorgang kurz zu veröffentlichen [...] Aus welchen Gründen das JustizMinisterium dermalen die Strafe und Kosten zurückerstatten lassen und ob es dabey die Untersuchung und die in derselben gefällten Straf-Erkenntniße wieder aufgehoben? ist mir unbekannt [...]". - Könneritz war nach seiner Zeit als Kanzler der konservativen Landesregierung bis 1846 sächsischer Justizminister. - Mit Sammlernotiz in Blei.

1 S. Folio. Mit Druckvermerk "(Gedruckt bei Eduard Krause.)". Als Abgeordneter des Kreises Erfurt zur Ausweisung der Preußischen Nationalversammlung nach Brandenburg an der Havel: "Mitbürger! Das Vaterland ist in Gefahr! Gegen den, am 2 d. M. fast einstimmig ausgesprochenen Willen der Versammlung ist heute das Ministerium Brandenburg ernannt worden und hat seine Wirksamkeit mit einem Staatsstreich begonnen. Die Versammlung der Volksvertreter soll vertagt werden, um später an einem andern Orte zusammenzutreten. Mitbürger! Die Nationalversammlung, berufen Euern Willen zu vertreten, kann weder vertagt, verlegt, noch aufgelöst werden. Wir sind fest entschlossen, solchen Gewaltstreichen mit allen uns zu Gebote stehenden Mitteln energischen Widerstand entgegenzusetzen. Vertraut auf uns, seid einig in der Wahrung der errungenen Freiheit, und bedenkt, daß besonnener Muth jede Gefahr überwindet [...]". - Die Preußische Nationalversammlung tagte von Mai bis September 1848 im Gebäude der Sing-Akademie zu Berlin und von September bis November im Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt. Nachdem die Regierung Brandenburg durch einen Staatsstreich eingesetzt wurde, beteiligte sich Krackrügge gemeinsam mit Carl d’Ester, Graf Eduard von Reichenbach, Hexamer und anderen linken Abgeordneten an der Verteidigung der Republik. Im Dezember 1848 löste die Regierung die Preußische Nationalversammlung schließlich durch königlichen Befehl auf. - Leicht stockfleckig, der linke Rand etwas gebräunt und leicht lädiert, mit einem kleinen Tintenfleck in der oberen linken Ecke und Sammlernotiz in Blei. Beiliegend ein alter Sammlungsumschlag.

An seinen Kollegen aus der Nationalliberalen Partei, den Textilunternehmer und Abgeordneten des deutschen Zollparlaments Friedrich Jansen (1813-84) bezüglich des Handels mit Russland und zu Kriegers baldiger Abreise nach Posen: "Auf Ihre Fragen, das Projekt eines Handelsvertrages mit Rußland betr., beehre ich mich, wenn auch spät, zu erwidern, daß nach den vor mir eingezogenen Erkundigungen vorläufig schwerlich an Realisierung desselben gedacht werden kann, indem die gründliche Umwälzung des Rußischen Tarifes jedenfalls vorhergehen müßte, diese aber anscheinend noch nicht so bald zu erhoffen steht. Neigung zur Annäherung besteht gelichwohl auf beiden Seiten [...]". - Krieger wurde im selben Jahr zur Provinzialsteuerdirektion in Posen versetzt und war hernach Steuerdirektor in Stettin. - Mit Sammlernotiz in Bleistift.

Contemporary silver gelatine baryte print, 216 x 90 (224 x 97) mm. Accompanied by a different silver gelatine print (press reproduction print, dated 1924), 200 x 150 (215 x 164) mm. A contemporary silver gelatine print of one of the best-known portraits of Lenin, showing the Russian revolutionary in the courtyard of the Kremlin, during a walk in the autumn sun. - At the time, Lenin was recovering from the serious wounds he had suffered during an assassination attempt on August 30th. Both bullets, supposedly fired by the Socialist Revolutionary Fanny Kaplan, were still embedded in his body, but Lenin had taken up work again. To prove to the eyes of all Russia, still struggling in civil war, that reports of Lenin's survival and improving health were not mere propaganda, his secretary and close associate Vladimir Bonch-Bruyevich talked the publicity-averse Soviet leader into the courtyard stroll that he directed towards a carefully hidden film team. The friendly ambush, led by the Russian photographer and filmmaker Alexander Vinkler, was soon discovered, and in addition to the several minutes of footage, a few photographs were taken. - The present famous shot is usually credited to Vinkler himself, though some sources cite the Kremlin photographer Petr Otsup. It was widely reproduced throughout the 1920s and 1930s: as early as 1920, the American communist Isaac McBride reproduced it in his book "Barbarous Soviet Russia", and it served as the model for several portraits in the Soviet Realist style, including Isaak Brodsky's famous painting of "Lenin before the Kremlin" (1924, now in the Lenin Museum, Moscow). It is also visible in the background of Alexander Rodchenko's 1935 portrait of Regina Lemberg peering through a Leica. - A fairly dark print with soft contrast, cropped to Lenin's full figure. Slight loss to upper right and lower left corner (the former flaw minutely affecting the background). Stamped "60" on the reverse; publisher's mark "S.F. 105768" in the negative. - Includes a less strongly cropped print of the same image, stamped and annotated on the reverse with the distributor's English caption, showing that it was used to illustrate a newspaper report about Lenin's death on 21 January 1924. His end was hastened by several strokes, very probably complications from the assassination attempt and later necessary operations.

Martinozzi, Laura, Duchess consort and regent of Modena (1639-1687).

Christmas wishes to the canon Bernardo Zenzani in Modena: "Con qualche ragione ne' Augurate felici le sante presnti solennità desiderando noi sempre à Voi, e alla casa vostra ogni bene: I il signore velo conceda abondantemente". - Laura Martinozzi was one of the seven nieces of Cardinal Mazarin, the so-called Mazarinettes, who grew up at the French court together with the later King Louis XIV. As a member of the Catholic clergy, Mazarin could not have children of his own and therefore used his nieces for dynastic politics. In 1655, Mazarin married Laura Martinozzi to Alfonso IV d'Este, heir to the throne of Modena and Reggio. Alfonso ruled Modena from 1658 until his untimely death in 1662. Laura Martinozzi became regent for her son Francesco II d'Este (1660-94). In 1674, when Laura was accompanying her daughter Maria d'Este in London following her marriage to King James II, the regency was unilaterally ended by Francesco II. Laura Martinozzi decided to remain in exile until the end of her life, spending most of her time in Rome. - With minor tears and traces of worming. Very slight foxing.

Martorelli, Luigi, Italian historian (1760-1831).

Interesting letters of recommendation for the revolutionary and educator Marc-Antoine Jullien de Paris (1775-1848), who had been exiled to Italy at Napoleon's orders. One of the letters is addressed to the archaeloogist Filippo Aurelio Visconti, a member of the "Commission des monuments publics". Martorelli asks Visconti to provide Jullien with access to the archaeological treasures administrated by the commission. - The second letter is addressed to François Palombi, "membre de la legion d'honneur", as Martorelli "knows for certain" that Palombi "has the kindness to make him feel the effects of our friendship". - Marc-Antoine Jullien de Paris, who is introduced by Martorelli as a "highly learned man, author of various highly esteemed works", was a follower of Robespierre during the Revolution and was imprisoned for a year following Robespierre's downfall. He fought under Napoleon in the Italian and Egyptian campaigns but had to return to France due to illness in 1798. After brief imprisonment in 1798, when the Directory suspected him of Jacobin sympathies, and having served in various military positions, Jullien received the cross of the Légion d'honneur in 1803. A visit to Madame de Staël in 1810 raised Napoleon's suspicions of Jullien, who was briefly exiled to Italy and, back in France, was arrested in 1813 for his opposition to Napoleon's rule. During the Restoration, Jullien was primarly active as an oppositional publisher and educator. Today he is best known as the founder of comparative pedagogy. - Largely unknown today, Luigi Martorelli was a member of the "Commission des monuments publics" in Rome and published several works, including a history of the Vatican clergy (1792) and a history of usury (1809). - Traces of folds. 4to. 2 pp. To an unidentified French scientist, announcing four letters of recommendation for the recipient's journey to Sicily: "J'ai reçu avec beaucoup de plaisir la lettre que vous m'avez adressée, Monsieur, en date de Grenade du 20 Décembre et je suis très flatté des marques de votre souvenir au milieu des Voyages intéressants que votre zèle constant et votre amour pour les sciences et les beaux-arts vous font entreprendre. Je suis enchanté surtout d'apprendre que vous vous proposez d'aller voir ma patrie et les monumens précieux qu'elle possède. Je m'empêche en conséquence de vous transmettre diverses lettres de recommandation qui pourront vous être utiles [...]". - Mastrilli de Gallo equipped the recipient with letters to his nephew, the Count of Rocca Marigliano, the Neapolitan prime minister Sir John Acton (1736-1811), the Sicilian Viceroy Alessandro Filangieri, Principe di Cutò, and the Neapolitan court astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826), who is most famous for the discovery of the dwarf planet Ceres in 1801. - Marzio Mastrilli de Gallo was the most important Neapolitan diplomat at the turn of the 19th century. As the new Neapolitan embassador, he accompanied Princess Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily to Vienna for her marriage with Emperor Francis II in 1795. Mastrilli di Gallo gained high esteem at the Imperial court and was even assigned to negotiate for the Emperor with Napoleon when the French army approached Vienna in 1797. Thus, the Italian diplomat became an Austrian signatory both of the preliminary Treaty of Leoben on 18 April and the Treaty of Campo-Formio on 17 October 1797, ending the War of the First Coaltion. In 1799, Marzio Mastrilli de Gallo served as Viceroy of Sicily, but he soon took the charge as Neapolitan ambassador in Paris. There he assisted in the coronation of Napoleon in 1805. Following the French invasion of Naples in 1806 and the proclamation of Joseph Bonaparte as King of Naples and Sicily on 30 March, Mastrilli de Gallo was named Minister of the Exterior, a position he retained under Joachim Murat. The Bourbon restoration did not end Mastrilli de Gallo's diplomatic career, and he returned to the service of King Ferdinand IV. - With a brown stain touching the text. Minimally dust- stained.

Interesting letter to the Franco-Italian banker Jacques-Gabriel Caccia (d. 1838) in Paris, asking him to send him two French journals covering the August 1815 French legislative election, the first that followed Napoleon's Hundred Days. Munarini recounts that he received, "although with much irregularity", the "Moniteur" and the "Jounal des Debats" before "Napoleon's invasion that entailed such terrible consequences" (transl.). Apparently, no French papers reached Modena in 1815, and Munarini, who was eager to "discover the public opinion, at least so far as it can be discovered through journals", therefore asks Caccia to send him two "public papers" of his choice "without delay". Confidential letter to an Italian nobleman, asking him to investigate why a personal letter of Francis IV to an unnamed souvereign, possibly Louis XVIII, has not been answered. Munarini asks the recipient for absolute confidentialty before recounting the matter: "You will remember that I was very concerned last year for fear that a letter might have been mislaid which His Royal Highness wrote to His Majesty, the King in his own hand. After much research, you came to discover that this letter was still in this Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I hoped that it had been given course; but I see with no less surprise than regret how vain my hopes were. I fear there is some mystery hidden in this affair; and we wish for someone who, with all dexterity, and without compromising my good Prince, will try to investigate why His Majesty did not reply to HRH. Was it lacking in some point in etiquette? Could that court perhaps be dissatisfied with ours? The affair, as you see, is delicate; and I desire that you commit nothing to writing, unless it be directed to me. Saldanha da Gama, Francisco de, Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon (1723-1776).

Small folio. Italian manuscript on paper. 9½ pp. on 5 ff. Sewn. This interesting circular was issued in connection with Saldanha da Gama's appointment as Apostolic Visitor for the investigation of allegations against the Jesuits that had been raised in the name of King Joseph I of Portugal. The ageing Pope Benedict XIV had appointed Saldanha da Gama based on a recommendation of the powerful Marquis de Pombal, a staunch anti-Jesuit, but tried to retain control over the investigation as he was sceptical of the allegations and concerned about the reputation of the Society of Jesus. The circular seems to be a preliminary step towards Saldanha da Gama's eventual condemnation of the Jesuits for exercising "illicit, public, and scandalous commerce both in Portugal and in its colonies" (Pollen 1912). It is a reminder of the Papal condemnations and interdictions of trade and financial investments for all ecclesiastics, citing the Papal bulls "Ex debito pastoralis officii" (Urban VIII, 22 Feb. 1633) and its renewal and extension by Pope Clement IX "Sollicitudo Pastoralis officii" (17 June 1669). These bulls explicitly addressed missionaries and other ecclesiastics in the colonies, though with limited success. Saldanha da Gama orders all recipients to summon their congregations "with bell-ringing" and read the circular aloud, have it registered in their books and, most importantly, to do their part in impeding all mentioned transgressions: "faccino su bito in suo adempimento cessare le sud.e transgressioni, e scandali, con tutte e tutti quelli, che fossero a quelle, o questi somiglianti; senza che, affine di palliarle, negoziando in qualunque sia modo, possano valersi di qual si voglia pretesto, titolo, colore, intelligenza, causa, occasione, o modo [...]". Benedict XIV died on 3 May 1758, and Saldanha da Gama moved to condemn the Jesuits on 15 May without conducting the thorough house-to-house visitation as ordered by the Pope. Together with the so-called Távora affair, an attempt on the life of King Joseph I that was wrongly attributed to the Jesuits, Saldanha da Gama's condemnation gave the Marquis de Pombal the necessary leverage to accomplish the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal and its colonies in 1759. France and Spain would soon follow the Portuguese example, a development that led to the Papal suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. The circular shows that economic competition with the powerful Jesuits, especially their reduction in Latin America, was an important factor in the push against them. - The remark "Num. VIII" in the upper right corner of the first page might indicate that this was the 8th copy of the circular. - Some browning. A final, probably blank leaf is missing. J. H. To the Countess Teresa Bronciforte in Piacenza, concerning an incident involving her son Vincenze that Somaglia was trying to help resolve despite difficulties in communication: "Prima ch'io ricevessi l'obbligante lettera di V.S. Illma dei 6 d'Agosto avrei dovuto essere informato dell'accaduto del suo Sig.re figliuolo C.te Vincenzo. Il fatto è che dopo i primi passi ch'Egli mi ricercò per rimuovere una difficoltà occorra nell'ammetterlo il concorso, la difficoltà felicemente fù rimossa. Ma dopo di ciò se la lettera sua e la contemporanea del buon C.te Gioan-Batta non mi avenero accennato l'occorso io nulla affatto avrei inputo; ed è notabile che il C.te Vincenzo avrebbe dovuto venire da me quando almeno dette loro parte dell'accaduto, e molto più se ha ricevuta risposta da loro, che sicuramente gli avranno scritto. [...]". - Giulio Maria della Somaglia was among the thirteen cardinals who refused to attend Napoleon's marriage to Princess Marie Louise in 1810. In retribution, they were stripped of their property and ecclesiastical status, becoming known as the black cardinals. At the time of the letter, Somaglia had just recently been named Dean of the College of Cardinals, the second highest postion within the Catholic Church. To the German mezzo-soprano Mathilde Marchesi and her husband, the baritone Salvatore Marchesi de Castrone, concerning the dissolution of his household in Paris and a meeting. In the letter dated 22 May 1894, Türr informs Mathilde Marchesi that he will give up his apartment in Paris and recommends his housekeeper Giuseppina to her: "Non venendo che raremente à Parigi, perciò lascierò il mio apartamento e cosí devo anche licenziare la mia Giuseppina, chi mi a servito 3½ anni. Mi prendo la libertà di raccomandarvi, ella è una buena persona e abilissimo, ella parla tedesco, italiano, francese e greco [...]". - In the undated letter, Türr asks Salvatore Marchesi de Castrone to visit him the following day: "Ti prego di venire domani mattina alle 10 e un quarto da me [...]". - Following his long years of exile, fighting for Hungarian and later for Italian independence on the side of Giuseppe Garibaldi and advancing to the rank of a general during the Expedition of the Thousand, Türr was active as a diplomat, peace activist, and engineer. As such he was involved in the first Panama Canal project and the successful construction of the Corinth Canal from 1881 to 1893. Türr died in Berck in Northern France. - Traces of folds. Various formats. Altogether 10 pp. Correspondence with the publisher and librarian Maurice Delamain, his wife, and Delamain's publishing company Stock in Paris. The earliest letter, dated 18 March, concerns Brion's historical biography "Théodoric, roi des Ostrogoths" (Payot, 1935). Brion is glad that the Baltic German philosopher Hermann von Keyserling (1880-1946) was willing to read the book and informs Delamain that he asked his publisher to send a copy to Keyserling as well as to Delamain himself, as he was also hoping for him to comment on the book: "A writer is lucky to have two readers such as Keyserling [and you] and if, by any chance, this Théodoric does not discourage you from reading other historical books that I have written, I am infinitely happy to send them to you [...]" (transl.). Delamain was Keyserling's French publisher from 1933. - A letter dated 15 November that reached Stock on 20 November 1944 concerns a translation of the Danish novelist Jens Peter Jacobsen. Brion, who had proposed to Stock a translation of Jacobsen's short stories, reacts to the information that they were already working on a publication with Lucien Maury: "I have seen too many examples of such clashes of translations to feel too much of a disappointment reading your letter. Indeed, I am glad I did not offer my translation of J. P. J.'s novels to any publisher other than you, which would have provoked a 'double' [...]". He mentions the competing Whitman translations of Louis Fabulet and Léon Bazalgette as an example, underscoring that he has "no intention of entering in a competition with Mr Lucien Maury", whom he praises as an experienced translator. Brion offers his thoughts on Jacobsen and his support of the publication "in all the journals to which I have access [...]". Maury's translation of Jacobsen for Stock did not go forward, after all, nor did Brion's translations. In February 1946, Brion offered his novel "La rose de cire" to Delamain, which was ultimately published by Albin Michel in 1964. In the second part of the letter, Brion mentions that Maury wrote to him about "difficulties with paper" delaying the publication of his Jacobsen translation and lauds Maury's biography of Victoria Benedictsson. - The remaining letters in the collection are of a more personal nature. On 21 January 1959, Brion thanks Delamain for a gift: "a noble alcohol is the natural complement to a beautiful book, and I congratulate you on creating both the one and the other equally perfectly", also sending greetings to his wife. The only letter written to Delamain's wife, dated 11 May, concerns the cancellation of a meeting. - The letter mentioning Keyserling shows continuous tears along the borders causing minor text loss, with notes in pencil and strong browning. The remaining letters have occasional minor tears, creases, and minor browning.

4to. 1 page. In Russian. To an author named Anna Nikolayevna, concerning the possible publication of the novel "Dawns" in Gorky's Parus publishing house. Expecting the rejection of the unfinished manuscript, Gorky advises her either to finish the novel or to turn its prologue into an independent short story: "I asked the editorial staff whether I can send them the manuscript of the prologue to the novel for review and they answered me that this would be useless if the piece is still not finished. I asked about it because, in its current form, they would have surely returned your manuscript, which I wanted to avoid. I have reread the prologue once again and I advise you the following: do not send 'Dawns' anywhere unless you finish the whole piece or turn the prologue into a separate short story" (transl.). - In a short postscript, Gorky refers Anna Nikolayevna to an editor: "At 'Parus' you have to write to Belousov (I hope that I got the surname right, but I think I did), his name is Ivan Nikolayevich". - Maxim Gorky founded Parus together with Alexander Tikhonov and I. P. Ladyzhnikov in 1915 in order to publish the monthly literary review "Letopis" (1915-17), the daily "Novaïa jizn" (1915-18), and books that opposed Russia's involvement in World War I and the war in general. "Letopis" was social-democratically oriented and thus in opposition to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Among its contributors were such important authors as Alexander Bogdanov, Ivan Bunin, Anatole France, Lev Kamenev, Alexandra Kollontai, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Romain Rolland, and H. G. Wells. Although the recipient has not yet been identified, the letter can be dated with respect to 'Parus', which only existed from 1915 to 1918. - Somewhat spotty. 12 mo. 2 pp. To an unnamed recipient addressed as "Dear Auntie", asking her whether she knows any Americans in Paris who would like to join one of Artôt de Padilla's musical soirées, as they would hear "compatriot voices", naming several artists who were scheduled to perform: "Je sais que vous ne sortez pas le soir, je ne vous invite pas à notre soirée musicale du Jeudi 7 Novembre - Mais si vouz avez quelques amis américains que cela intéressait - envoyez moi leurs noms et leurs adresses. Je serai heureuse qu'ils entendent quelques belles voix compatriates - J'ai Nikita, le nouveau contralto de l'opéra, Miss Patts, M.me de Tercane [?], M.lles de Korff et de Broemsen en un mot je crois que ce sera belle". Among the artists mentioned in the letter, only the American opera singer Nikita (b. 1872) can be identified. - A student of Pauline Viardot, Désirée Artôt made her successful debut at the Paris Opéra in Meyerbeer's "Le prophète" on 5 February 1858. Engagements in Milan, Berlin, London, St Petersburg, and Moscow followed. During an 1868 tour in Russia, Artôt met Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who dedicated his Romance in F minor for piano (Op. 5) to Artôt and eventually proposed to her. Both Tchaikovsky and Artôt had second thoughts, and the marriage was not finalized. On 15 September 1869, Artôt married the Spanish baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos without informing Tchaikovsky, who learned the news from Nikolai Rubinstein. The memory of these events was fresh in Tchaikovsky's mind when he composed "Romeo and Juliet" in 1869. They met on several occasions after the engagement and in 1887 Tchaikovsky even dedicated his "Six French Songs" (Op. 65) to Désirée Artôt-Padilla, whom he considered one of the greatest singers alive. - Minimally stained.

Intimer französischsprachiger Brief an ihre Halbschwester Claire de Charnacé (1830-1912) betreffend eine plötzliche psychische Erkrankung ihrer Mutter Marie d'Agoult (1805-76). Trotz Cosima Wagners distanziertem Verhältnis zur Mutter, das durch den Konflikt zwischen d'Agoult und dem Vater Franz Liszt schwer belastet war, zeigt sie sich im Brief überaus besorgt und mitfühlend, auch ihrer Halbschwester gegenüber, zu der sie ein inniges Verhältnis hatte: "Arme Liebe, welch traurige Dinge Sie mir mitteilen und Sie aushalten müssen! Ich kann mir eine so plötzliche Krankheit nicht erklären, der letzte Brief von Mutter datiert vom 15. Juni und ist völlig vernünftig. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich seit den Ereignissen, die sie ferngehalten hatten, einen Rückfall befürchtete; als ich sie hier sah, fand ich sie bei so guter Gesundheit, dass ich völlig beruhigt war, wobei mich ihre große Zerstreutheit überraschte, aufgrund derer sie dieselben Dinge 5 oder 6 Mal fragte. Aber ich sagte mir, dass ihre Gedanken woanders waren, dass sie aus Höflichkeit fragte und die Antworten nicht hörte. Ich wusste nicht, worauf ich 'Rasen geben' beziehen sollte, da es unserem Garten nicht daran fehlt und wir haben überhaupt nicht über hier zu machende Arrangements gesprochen. Warum wurde Mama nach Paris zurückgebracht? Sie hat mir geschrieben, dass sie bis auf weiteres in St. Lupicin bleiben wird und ich habe ihr geschrieben, dass sie besser nach Tribschen kommen sollte, statt zu diesem Zeitpunkt nach Paris zurückzukehren. Denken Sie, dass ich ihr schreiben soll, soll ich sie auf ihre Krankheit ansprechen? Weiß sie, dass sie phantasiert? [...] Ich bin tief betrübt durch diese Neuigkeit und alles was Mama betrifft, macht mich schrecklich trübsinnig. Gueffier was an administrator at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal, where Achard had debuted in 1834. Achard was also a talented vocalist, studying at the Paris Conservatory under Adolphe Nourrit. - Traces of folds. With a tear from breaking the seal. Somewhat stained.

The earlier letter is addressed to the actor and playwright Louis Péricaud (1835-1909), urgently asking him for 25 francs: "You will get them back if we perform; if not ... merde". - In the letter from 10 March 1875, Karoly expresses frustration with herself concerning the delivery of a role and asks the unidentified author of the play to tell her whether she may keep it or not: "Votre pièce me trotte par la tête, et vous me voyez furieuse après-moi de vous avoir si sottement rendu votre rôle. Je n'ose vous le redemander, il est plus que probable, que vous étés en pleine répétition, et que toute marche à la merveille en fin ! que voulez-vous ? on m'a si cruellement laissé dans l'ombre, que je me suis prêté à douter de moi. Ne m'en voulez-pas, et j'aime à espérer que j'aurai une revanche à prendre avec vous [...]". - Caroline Duveau was a student of her later husband Maubant (1821-1902). Following a short engagement at the Odéon, Duveau celebrated her debut at the Comédie-Française on 8 September 1868, where she would play alongside Maubant. - Traces of folds. Minimal browning.

Following short engagements at Liège, Lille, Toulouse, La Haye, and Brussels, Lassalle had his successful debut at the Paris Opera in 1872 and became a member of the ensemble. He quit the stage in 1894 and later taught at the Paris Conservatory. - On mourning paper. Minimally browned.

Charming letter sending exuberant congratulations to an unnamed recipient, probably a theatre director or actor, for a successful show, giving particular praise to Coquelin, probably Coquelin aîné, whom he compares to Molière in a pun on Molière's real name Poquelin: "bravo ! bravissimo ! cher vieux ! tu as pu tenir pendant deux heures toute cette belle assemblée sous le charme avec autant d'esprit que de cœur ... je te félicite d'un triomphe si mérité, et je te félicite également d'avoir porté si haut dans l'opinion publique notre illustre camarade Coquelin dont le nom vivra aussi longtemps que celui de Poquelin (et ce n'est pas peu dire) cet infatigable novateur qui considère la loterie des artistes comme la première étape vers le port du salut qu'il veut fonder pour les vieux chevronnés du marouflage, et les imprévoyantes cigales. Ton discours fait aimer les artistes et Coquelin me rend fier d'être artiste et tu es digne secrétaire de ce Roi de la rampe !". - René Luguet played at the Gymnase and at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal, where he was also active as a director. Das ironische Gedicht aus Lorrains "Modernités" (Paris, 1885) handelt von den Komparsinnen, die mit ihrer "Nacktheit" und mit ihren "durchsichtigen Kleidern" die alten Herren im Publikum außer sich geraten lassen: "Avec des poses attirantes, / Mêlée aux tous criards des ors, / Resplendit au fond des décors / La nudité des figurantes. / Les vieux messieurs aux mains errantes, / Serrent leurs voisines plus fort [...]". Im Beisatz verspricht Mévisto, er werde sich um "Morphinie" kümmern und den folgenden Tag Nachricht schicken: "Je vais m'occuper de Morphinie et vous enverrai la réponse demains. Amitiés. Mevisto ainé". - Der als Jules Joseph Wisteaux geborene Mévisto wurde unter dem Beinamen "Pierrot" am Pariser Theater "La Scala" berühmt.

Garde, a former student of his at the Paris Conservatoire: "Voulez-vous avoir l'amabilité de recevoir Monsieur Garde. C'est un de mes anciens élèves 1er Prix en tragédie en 1903. Il a des très-grandes qualités et pourrait j'en suis sur vous être très utile. Il vous dira lui-même de vive voix mieux que je ne pourrais le faire par lettre ce qu'il espère de vous [...]". - A medical doctor prior to his acting career, Paul Monet had his stage debut at the Odéon in 1880. In 1889 he first played at the Comédie Française, of which he became sociétaire two years later. As a professor at the Paris Conservatoire, Mounet instructed important stage and film actors such as Pierre Fresnay, Valentine Tessier, Daniel Mendaille, and Françoise Rosay. - With collector's note in pencil.

8vo and oblong 8vo. Together 3½ pp. The earliest letter in the collection is dated 18 April 1848. According to a collector's note it was addressed to the painter and illustrator Eugène Lampsonius, known as Eustache Lorsay, asking him to draw the woman bearing the letter. On 10 April 1856, Tisserant wrote to a friend named Eustache, probably Lorsay, announcing that a stone (most likely a lithography stone) would be sent to him and asking him for a meeting in that matter: "On va vous poster une pierre. Dites moi, par un mot, jeté à la poste, si vous pourrez, me donner de 3h ½ à 5h ½. Si vous pouviez venir chez moi cela me serait bien plus comode, j'ai tant à faire. Vous dineriez chez moi. Dans tous les cas, je compte sur un mot pour faire poster la pierre chez moi ou chez vous [...]". - In a letter from 11 June 1866, Tisserant asks the recipient for two tickets at the Opéra Le Peletier on behalf of his son. - The document in the collection is an acceptance of the discharge of a rent contract, dated 30 April 1874: "J'accepte de Mr Bouquin [...], le congé qu'il me donne de l'appartement qu'il occupe dans ma maison 48 rue de la Tour d'auvergne, pour le 1ier Janvier 1874". - The son of a gardener had originally trained as a porcelain painter until he joined a travelling theatre ensemble. In 1837, he was engaged at the Théâtre du Gymnase, soon rising to be one of its principal actors. Successful engagements at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin and the Odéon followed. - The letter dated 11 June 1866 on stationery with embossed monogram. Traces of folds, some browning, and minor tears overall.
