AUTOGRAPHS by two daughters of Queen Victoria four of her grandchildren and a daughter in law
Helena Her Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and Beatrice HRH Princess Henry of Battenberg ; and Helena Victoria Her Highness Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein Charles Edward Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Albany
HRH The Duchess of Albany for the Royal Waterloo Hospital 1906. These seven autographs come from a 250-copy printing of a 1906 album of autographs by members of royalty the aristocracy the church politicians and other celebrities of the day which were assembled by the Duchess of Albany on behalf of the Royal Waterloo Hospital for Children and Women of which she was then President. The signatories here gave their married titles at the time together with a quotation or apercu. The Duchess of Albany herself was married to Charles Edward Queen Victoria's grandson; Victoria Eugenie Victoria's granddaughter became HM Queen of Spain by marriage just three weeks before this album was issued and narrowly survived a bomb attack on the way back from her wedding but there was just enough time before printing for her new title to be added to both the contents list of this album and to the reverse of her autograph; Alice was the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria. Undoubtedly a unique group of royal autographs from the Edwardian era. HRH The Duchess of Albany for the Royal Waterloo Hospital, 1906 unknown

NELSON Horatio 1758 1805
Autograph Letter Signed
This most renowned of British naval heroes is almost as famous for his scandalous open affair with one of the most famous and beautiful women in England the married Emma Hamilton despite having lost most of his teeth the use of his right eye and his right arm in various military successes; his nautical victories against the French made him Napoleon's nemesis; killed aboard his ship "Victory" in the battle of Trafalgar. ALS 1p 7" X 8¼" Burnham 1793 February 2. Addressed to "Gentlemen." Near fine. A boldly penned and handsome example of Nelson's scarce right-handed penmanship four years prior to losing his right arm in a July 1797 battle and having to learn to write left handed. Rather cryptic financial content reading in full: "I am glad to hear You did not bring our trust money into the Lands as they had risen so very much. I shall be in Town on tuesday Evening & shall probably see Mr. Creed on Wednesday therefore please to let the money Remain in your hands 'till you hear farther from my Brother or myself. I am Your Very Humble Servant." Page & Creed were Nelson's bankers so the reference to Mr. Creed almost certainly refers to that firm. This choice and scarce letter has been handsomely displayed under a pale green matte with gold filigree alongside a stunning 6½" X 8¼" hand-colored steel engraved portrait of "Horatio Viscount Nelson" engraved by W. Finden and "From the original of Hoppner in / His Majesty's Collection." This early 19th century portrait is in fine condition and bears a large incredibly ornate hand-colored decorative border; it depicts Nelson almost full-length in full military regalia with his empty right sleeve pinned to his chest. This pair is framed under glass in a 1" contemporary walnut frame overall dimensions 21" X 15". A superb presentation -- Nelson in his most desirable that is right-handed form. unknown

RICHTER Johann Paul Friedrich 1763 1825
Autograph Letter Signed
Jean Paul" a much-admired and much-maligned German writer of the Romantic period whose prolific output included such novels as "The Invisible Lodge" 1793 "Hesperus" 1795 "Siebenkäs" 1796-97 "Titan" 1800-03 "The Awkward Age" 1804-05 and many others. ALS in German 1p 6¼" X 8" Hof in Vorgtland Germany 13 December 1789. Addressed to in translation "Highly honored and respected Sir." Very good. Mounting traces along left edge verso only. An unusually early example boldly penned in dark brown ink during a period when he was living with his mother and tutoring children in a nearby village; his pseudonymously-published poorly-received "Selections from the Devil's Papers" was published earlier this same year. In this letter he writes an unnamed publisher that in translation "I take the liberty to send you the beginning of a manuscript and beg you to give me your opinion as to its probable acceptance or rejection at your earliest convenience. I have the honor to sign myself with the greatest respect." Boldly signed "J.P.F. Richter." Richter's next book "The Invisible Lodge" wasn't published until 1793 and parts of it such as "Life of the Cheerful Schoolmaster Maria Wutz" are believed to have been written in 1790 so it's quite possible that he was submitting some other portion of "The Invisible Lodge" with this query. An interesting example worth further research. Very scarce. unknown

TCHEREPNINE Alexander 1899 1977
Autograph Note Signed
This Russian-born American composer ended up in France after the Russian Revolution where he performed and composed prolifically -- symphonies orchestral pieces piano concertos operas ballet and choral music; post-WW2 he emigrated to Chicago where he taught and composed. Remarkably beautiful ALS 1p 6" X 11" Vanves France n.y. likely early 1930s. Near fine. On a lovely heavy tannish tissue paper Tcherepnine pens in his usual miniscule script and black ink a note to unidentified "Cher ami" in French referring to the first performance of his new work "Suite georgienne" and the Salle de l'ancienne Conservatoire in Paris; he switches to English briefly near the close when noting trying to reach someone by telephone "but was unsuccessfull!" This handsome note occupies only a small central portion at the right margin much of this sheet being filled with an extraordinary partly hand-drawn and partly inkstamped color drawing presumably Japanese depicting a monkey descending the branches of a tree bearing numerous orange flowers against a pale blue background. Wonderfully executed in pale soft colors. At lower right and lower left are small inkstamped insignias that we assume indicate the artist. A truly exceptional letter from the young composer. unknown

SMOCK Nell Stolp 1896 ?
Original Book Illustration Art
This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet" "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears" "Whitetail: King of the Forest" "The Three Puppies" "The Small One" "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg" "The Bluebird" "The Night Before Christmas" "The Enchantment of Santa Claus" "The Christ Child" "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens" "Polly Parrot" "Piccolino" "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko" written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages front board graphic frontispiece pages 21 and 31. Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards most with typeset text blocks pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature though many contain pencilled coloring instructions etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form two 22" X 15" two 15" X 18½". Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George" which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. unknown

WILKINSON James 1757 1825
Document Signed
This Revolutionary War general of checkered reputation resigned twice during the course of the war then was involved in shady negotiations with the Spanish governor of Louisiana to separate the Kentucky area and turn it over to Spain; he fought against the Indians was the officer to whom the British handed over Detroit and became the first governor of the Louisiana Territory 1805-07; he survived two court martials one regarding his support of Aaron Burr badly tarnishing his reputation. DS 4pp lettersheet 7 3/4" X 12½ Woodford County Commonwealth of Virginia 1792 January 6. Very good. Mild age toning and bit of foxing with some small separations at some fold lines but overall clean and quite legible penned on extra heavy stock. Handsomely penned indenture chock full of repetitive formulaic boilerplate legalese in which Wilkinson and his wife Anne sell to William Murray Jr. for "the sum of twenty pounds current money of Virginia. Two lotts of ground in the town of Frankfort." Murray according to one history "came to Kentucky soon after the State was admitted to the Union. He is described as "a bold and eloquent man an aggressive politician and a brilliant speaker; a man of whom his contemporaries never spoke except in terms of unqualified admiration and 'was probably the most accomplished scholar among all the eminent men of Kentucky at that day.' He was a lawyer of sufficient ability to cope successfully with such men as George Nicholas John Breckinridge and Henry Clay." Signed large and bold by Wilkinson at the bottom of the second page where he also signs below his signature for wife Ann. Alongside each signature is a red wax seal. At lower right this transaction has been signed by three witnesses: John Hughes Richard Thomas and GABRIEL MAUPIN Revolutionary War officer 1720-94 a Williamsburg tavernkeeper saddler and harness maker who served as keeper of the Public Magazine. The third and fourth leaves in addition to the usual docketing contain an odd variety of affidavits: First is a statement signed by Michael Rappele alderman from the "City of Philadelphia" dated February 23 1816 testifying that James Wilkinson appeared before him "the Grantor in the foregoing deed. and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed." Second is a statement from Willis A. Lee of the "State of Kentucky General Court" dated May 11 1816 "hereby certifying that this deed and the certificates of acknowledgments thereon endorsed was produced to me. and truly admitted to record in my office." And third and last is a lengthier endorsement filling half of the fourth leaf and signed by ROBERT WHARTON 1757-1834 the longest-serving mayor in Philadelphia history elected fifteen times between 1798 and 1824 from "City of Philadelphia" and dated March 27 1816 noting that Wilkinson "acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired to might be recorded as such." Boldly signed by Wharton and with large circular flute-edged paper seal intact. A couple of months after Wilkinson signed this deed January 6 1792 he was commissioned a brigadier general under General Anthony Wayne March 1792 whom he disliked and attempted to discredit; and a couple of months further along June 1792 the Commonwealth of Virginia county from which this deed was written Woodford County along with several other counties became the new state of Kentucky. The ever-scheming Wilkinson had been conspiring with Esteban Miro Spanish governor of Louisiana on whose payroll it turns out he was listed to make sure the U.S. handed over its interest in Kentucky to Spain. An intriguing and curious document. Why Wilkinson pursued the endorsements appended to the deed 24 years after the sale is uncertain; in 1816 Wilkinson had just published an autobiography "Memoirs of My Own Times" -- according to one source "three confused volumes of documents which are as significant for what they omit as for what they contain" -- and was living on a plantation below New Orleans. Truly a provocative item worth further research. Accompanied by a small 4½" X 5½" 19th century engraved portrait of Wilkinson in profile within a 2¼" circle -- heavy stock and unusual in that it is glazed with a heavy plate mark. Could it be that Wilkinson sold this land in '92 because he thought his scheme to place this territory under Spanish control might soon come to fruition unknown

SLAVERY WRIT OF REPLEVIN ST. CHARLES MISSOURI. TUTER Reuben ? ?
Document Signed
Confidant of Missouri pioneer Jonathan Bryan 1759-1846 of the noted St. Charles family whose relatives included their neighbor Daniel Boone. DS 1p 7½" X 12" St. Charles County MO 1847 February 2. Near fine. Acknowledgment that Tuter who signs himself as "Administrator of the Estate of Johnathan Bryan" has had a writ of replevin made out and issued to the St. Charles sheriff Edward C. Cunningham 1809-65 for delivery to an unnamed offender. The writ seeks to recover the following property apparently wrongfully taken from Jonathan Bryan's estate: "one negro man a Slave named Heney one Two horse waggon and one pair of Briches Two Black horses one Lorrel horse with bold face one walnut Cupboard one clock one Bureau one bedstead and bedding one walnut Table one Trunk one Bible." In other words everything but the kitchen sink. Signed at the conclusion by Tater in his definitely untutored hand. Tales of slaves are found in the Bryan family lore such as: "Mrs. Jonathan Bryan a kinswoman of Daniel Boone was working in her yard with a slave woman when a boy slave screamed. She saw an Indian warrior heading for them with a tomahawk in one hand and a gun in the other. The women ran for the house. Just as they were slamming the door they caught the warrior's head and right arm between the door and facing. The slave woman grabbed the hatchet from his hand and killed him with a sharp blow. The women had barely recovered from their fright when the boy shouted again." Could the slave boy in this old family legend by none less than the "Slave named Heney" whose return is demanded in this replevin suit Quite unusual slavery item with an intriguing history. unknown

Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left takeoff and lower right landing corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois with the word "ILLINOIS" below against a white background. HUNTER Robert 1664 1734
Document Signed
The colonial governor of New York and New Jersey 1710-20 had earlier been lieutenant governor of the Virginia Colony 1707-09 and later served as governor of Jamaica 1728-34. DS 1p 12½" X 16½" Chesterfield New Jersey 1716 January 26. Good only. Jagged and irregular edges not affecting text with entire left and right edges bearing old archival reinforcement; three original horizontal folds the upper two of which bear the same old archival reinforcement. Overall bold and legible though penned in brown ink in a large flamboyant hand. "An Act To Prevent Unseasonable burning the Woods" it is titled in oversize script. "Whereas by Continual Experience fireing the Woods in the fall and winter is found very Prejudicial and Dangerous to the Inhabitants of this Province Be it therfore Enacted by the Governour Councill and Representatives in General Assembly met and Convened and by the authority of the same That if any person fire the woods at any time whatsoever Excepting between the fourteenth day of February and the fourteenth day of Aprile next following of every year shall forfeit the sum of fourty shillings Proclamation money for every such offense." Goes on to spell out additional penalties should anyone be injured during a burning and specifies that this act does not apply to burning wood on one's own land. At lower left is penned the place and date and "I assent to this bill Enacting the same and order it to be Enrolled" below which Hunter signs large and bold. At lower right this bill is countersigned on behalf of the legislature by JOHN KINSEY 1693-1750. Kinsey was speaker of the New Jersey Assembly and later moved to Philadelphia and held the same position with the Pennsylvania Assembly where he led the Quaker faction; he later served as chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Here he signs large and bold adding "Spkr" Speaker after his signature largely obscured by archival repair. Among the dockets on the verso the lead docket reads "Du Jours 27 1716 This bill having been three times read is past & ordered to be sent up to the Councill for their Concurrence" and is boldly signed "Will Bradford" followed by what appears to be a title in a stylized script perhaps reading "CP" -- Councill Printer WILLIAM BRADFORD 1663-1752 was the pioneering printer of the Middle Colonies; he was named the King's Printer in 1693 and held that post until 1725 monopolizing the printing of all government acts and documents; he opened the first paper mill in America in 1690 printed the first New York paper currency in 1709 the first American "Book of Common Prayer" in 1719 the first newspaper in New York in 1725 and the first history of New York in 1727. The purpose of Bradford's docket here is unclear. Perhaps the procedure was to docket each of the three official readings of a proposed act before the legislature as appears here -- at which time the act would be signed into law and passed along to Bradford. His docket would verify that the act had been transmitted to the official printer for setting into type. There are no official seals stamps or blind embossing of any kind on this document which suggests it was a file copy of some sort -- perhaps a copy retained by the printer himself -- and not an official legislative copy. Hunter documents are uncommon and this interesting piece bears an exceptionally large and bold signature. Bradford documents are extremely scarce in any form and this is a choice highly desirable example. unknown

"Please accept my sincere thanks for your warm words of Congratulations. I had no reason to expect such friendly action from you. It is therefore the more Grateful. In writing to the Governor you performed a very delicate service." -- which suggests that it was Ewing who suggested Kohlsaat's appointment to the Governor Joseph W. Fifer. unknown
