Connett Eugene V. Connett
Horse in profile: original etching signed on the back of the frame in Connett's hand "Etching by Eugene V. Connett III
N.p. n.d. The horse of compact configuration with heavy shoulders possibly a hunter stands facing to the right with all four legs showing wearing single rein and a simple bridle. 1 vols. Plate 4 x 6 inches framed to 7 x 9 inches overall. Fine condition. Custom black morocco backed slipcase and matching cloth chemise. The horse of compact configuration with heavy shoulders possibly a hunter stands facing to the right with all four legs showing wearing single rein and a simple bridle. 1 vols. Plate 4 x 6 inches framed to 7 x 9 inches overall. Eugene Connett founder and proprietor of The Derrydale Press had two major personal sporting interests: angling and wildfowling both of which are depicted in the scant handful of original watercolors he made for his own amusement. These while most appealing are obviously products of an amateur hand. This etching by all indications the only one he ever did differs both in subject matter and degree of skill: despite a certain stiffness in delineating the contours of the animal's body it is a near professional piece of work and it seems almost incredible that knowing what we do about Connett's artistic penchant he rose to such heights. Something about the etching suggests that it may be the portrait of a specific horse--in which case the accomplishment is even greater. Connett as publisher writer and sportsman comes with this unique example into the realm of sporting artist--an unexpected distinction up to now. unknown books

COOK Ann
Ann Cook and Friend. With an Introduction and Notes by Regula Burnet. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER
8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, free endpapers very lightly spotted; brown cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter very lightly dust-soiled at backstrip. This valuable work transcribes sections of Cook's 'Professed Cookery' (3ed; 1760) which includes the author's 'Plan of House-Keeping'. The 'Plan' is presented as an autobiographical account of her life in service at Hexham and Morpeth, together with the life of her friend 'Abigail'. The work as a whole provides a well-nigh unique account of country life in the eighteenth century; this edition (the sole modern version) includes a lengthy introduction by Burnet. Scarce, especially in this condition. See Axford, p.13; Bitting, p.69; Maclean, p.35; Oxford, p.91; Pargellis & Medley 1801.

All edges gilt frontispiece with tissue guard illustrations and plates with tissue guards. The spine is lightly worn at the top and bottom the corners are just lightly beginning to fray where they have been worn and there is a small abrasion on the front free endpaper where a sticker has been removed. "The date at which men first began to jump fences on horseback cannot even be surmised. I find in no book or record whatever any expression of surprise that any horseman of old time had jumped a hedge a brook a stile or anything else. Jumping like other things must have been a matter of gradual advance. The earliest war-horses may have been called upon to 'negotiate' some ditch or gully; they may have cleared the body of some fallen steed or a portrion of a broken chariot; and this may have been the first step towards high and broad leaping" - from the text.
