DAVID'S FIRST BOOK, AND THE FIRST OF THE THREE VOLUMES THAT WOULD CHANGE ENGLISH COOKING FOR EVER. Lehmann's first edition of 1950 was a small print run, in relative terms expensive and tended to appeal primarily to the converted. It was also the work that combined for the first time David's highly characteristic style with Minton's wonderfully complementary illustrations. Certainly it can be argued that this is the most influential English cookery book of the twentieth century. EARLY IMPRESSIONS ARE SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

Most of these deal with hunting shooting and dogs; there is also a sketch called "The Otter Hunt" and a few entertaining trifles e.g. "Broadway on a Fine Day" "First Impressions of America." etc. Gee justly remarks ".every essay is a gem. From the title one would not connect it with sport but most of the essays are on shooting and written by a true sportsman who knew his subject." <br/>David Wagstaff said that this book was by William P. Hawes; it is now attributed to one J. Davis of whom nothing else is known. The attribution by Henderson is based on the Van Winkle copy which was inscribed "with the compliments of J. Davis Author.". A splendid work of unsurpassed almost lyrical prose and superb photogravures - and of predictable rarity. This is the earlier of two versions containing 143 pages of text against 152 in the later. At the time of the book's production Davis wrote to Theodore Low De Vinne "I think the book looks fine . " and the author's judgment still holds true mroe than a century later.
