Sherman Foote Denton 1856-1937 a Massachusetts native and the child of an abolitionist and a radical feminist was an accomplished artist from his youth. He travelled the world collecting and illustrating natural history specimens. Denton was adept at preserving specimens especially butterflies and fish. He was author of As Nature Shows Them. Moths and Butterflies of the United States East of the Rocky Mountains 1900 and is most widely known now for his ichythological work some of which appeared in the important series of annual reports of the New York State Fisheries Game and Forest Commission 1895-1905; and in publications of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.<br/><br/>The list of "West Coast fishes collected" includes a note "For a good many of the fishes I have neither a common nor a scientific name as yet S.F.D." The list of "Fishes of the East Coast" includes many of the species he illustrated. Both show signs of revisions and additions.<br/><br/>The two portraits depict Sherman in early adulthood by F.J. Blocks in fine condition; catalogues somewhat crumpled with annotations by an earlier owner. A total of 25 blocks some with proofs pasted on back plus a copper plated zinco of Lowe's order form. Accompanied by three catalogues in which the images appeared. Various sizes from 1-3/4 inches square to 5-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches. Original Half-Tone Electroplate Blocks for Derrydale Catalogues. A nice sampling of electroplate catalogue blocks from the estate of Frank J. Lowe who carried on the production and sale of Derrydale sporting prints after the Press closed at the start of WWII. Boyer was one of the small group of artists most closely associated with the Derrydale Press. He was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and his work as an illustrator was widely published. Connett published several series of prints by Boyer including the celebrated Fathers of American Sport and fly-fishing prints; Boyer illustrated four books published by the Derrydale Press including Connett's own Random Casts and A Tomato Can Chronicle by Edmund Ware Smith where this drawing appears.
