Carolina Sports by Land and Water. Including Incidents of Devil-Fishing &c
Charleston South Carolina: Burges & James 1846. First edition. 172 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Later mottled calf. Bookplate of Edward Sands Litchfield. Fine. First edition. 172 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Litchfield Copy. William Elliott 1788-3 Feb. 1863 was a third-generation South Carolina planter writer and sportsman. He served in the state senate for nearly two decades and was respected as one of the most gifted planters of the old South producing large crops of rice and sea island cotton. He wrote frequently on agricultural and outdoor topics in newspapers and in the American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine. The sporting sketches were collected and published as Carolina Sports by Land and Water Including Incidents of Devil Fishing Etc. 1846. "The charm of these tales lies in the animation and gusto with which Elliott communicates his experiences. . Theodore Roosevelt who became fascinated with harpooning the devilfish in later years paid tribute to Elliott's book: 'Killing devil-fish with the harpoon and lance had always appealed to me as a fascinating sport since as a boy I had read Elliott's account of it in his Field Sports of South Carolina'"ANB.

A landmark of American sporting literature and an uncommon antebellum Charleston imprint here in a fine binding. Elting Victor
A Canadian Expedition Caption title
N.p. Chicago 1933. First edition privately printed. Illustrated with 2 photographs. 24 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original printed wrappers gathered with cord. Slight wrapper wear internally fine with bookplate of Col. Henry A. Siegel. First edition privately printed. Illustrated with 2 photographs. 24 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Unrecorded. Inscribed on front flyleaf "Merry Christmas from Victor 1934."
Victor Elting and his friend McPherson left Chicago July 29 1933 and arrived at a station in Northern Canada called Ombabika in the Thunder Bay District on the 31st. They spent three weeks camping canoeing and fishing for trout and the narrative records places they fished and people they met. Elting ends his work with these words: "As we travelled back to Toronto we talked it all over. We had travelled more than three hundred miles in the wilderness and had visited an old civilization. We had emerged with a better sense of values and a better philosophy of life. We were in bounding health. We had taken certain physical risks but we had rejoiced in them. If we had taken counsel of our fears of accident or sickness we would have stayed at home and we would have missed a great adventure." Not in Bruns or Heller. Not in OCLC unknown books

Fine/very good. 4to 111 pages black cloth; dj torn on rear panel edgeworn

Inscribed by Toller in 1976 on the half-title page to Travis Randy. Toller Cranston was a prominent Canadian figure skater. He won the 19711976 Canadian national championships the 1974 World bronze medal and the 1976 Olympic bronze medal. Despite never winning at the World Figure Skating Championships due to his poor compulsory figures he won the small medal for free skating at the 1972 and 1974 championships. Cranston is credited by many with having brought a new level of artistry to men's figure skating. . He quickly gained a reputation as the most innovative and exciting artistic skater of his time one of the first to emphasize use of the whole body to express the music as well as to execute skating moves in best form to lie down while sliding down the ice and to wear elaborate costumes.13 He was particularly known for the quality and inventiveness of his spins which were widely copied by other skaters. The quality of his precision landings and inventive choreography was topped by his combination jumps that included triple revolution jumps - Wikipedia." Gage Publishing Limited hardcover
