AN INTERESTING ARCHIVE OF ART AND CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN ARTIST HAROLD SMITH AND DANIEL ROCHFORD MANAGING EDITOR OF THE SPORTSMAN AND LATER ESSO EXECUTIVE 1937-1969

A few minor wrinkles folds and an occasional tear else in uniformly fine condition. From the estate of Daniel Rochford. With numerous examples of Smith's art including two watercolor studies for his November 1932 football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. Archive of a Sportsman Magazine Artist. An extremely interesting archive chronicling the personal friendship and professional relationship of two colorful individuals. During Daniel Rochford's five-year tenure as Managing Editor of The Sportsman Harold Smith did a number of small black and white drawings for the magazine and at least one cover of a stylized formation of football players two watercolor studies of which form part of this collection. Rochford left the magazine in 1935 to enter the public relations field subsequently joining Standard Oil of New Jersey and until Smith's death in 1969 gave the artist a number of Esso commissions for brochures and film strips as well as other work.<br/><br/>The archive includes approximately 35 ALS from Smith some 65 pages and two post cards about 30 carbons of letters from Rochford mostly dating from the 1940s on Esso matters plus some other correspondence. In addition included in Smith's art works are are nine pencil sketches for 1930s political cartoons two pencil advertisement roughs for Mt. Tremblant ski area and four watercolor skiing sketches nine sheets of pencil sketches possibly for a book or article eight amusing ink on tissue sketches for Esso publications one black and white and four watercolor caricatures of the artist and others and a particularly delightful 18 x 24 sheet of 19 watercolor scenes illustrating a 1946 visit Smith paid to the Rochfords to do their portraits.<br/><br/><br/><br/>In his last years Rochford regretted that distance and circumstance prevented the possibility of he and Smith collaborating on a book. Conceived as the first comprehensive encyclopaedia of pastimes enjoyed by the modern British gentleman and gentlewoman the highly successful Badminton Library took its name from the estate of the Duke of Beaufort who edited the series. Various other peers contributed volumes such as Lord Walsingham who authored Shooting and the Earl of Suffolk who wrote Racing and Steeplechasing. The first volume Hunting 1885 was dedicated to the Prince of Wales. These upper-class credentials were integral to the original conception of the series but it was assumed that the Duke of Beaufort's contribution "would be purely nominal" Campbell p. 128. As it was the 8th Duke was an enthusiastic and highly active participant in the project. 30 vols octavo 180 x 130 mm. Copiously illustrated with plates some coloured illustrations in text. Contemporary red crushed morocco spines lettered in gilt with raised bands compartments tooled with gilt sporting motifs Turkish over Spanish moiré pattern marbled sides and endpapers top edges gilt. Boston: Lea and Shepard 1868. First Edition. 8vo burgundy cloth 282 pp. First edition. With four plates. Very Good. A bright first edition copy of the second novel to ever feature baseball and the first to use baseball in the title and design of the book. William Everett was the cousin of Edward Everett Hale and the son of the orator Edward Everett. He wrote this book shortly after graduating from Harvard's law department. He would return later to Harvard to teach latin. This book has two and a half chapters of baseball content. The first novel with baseball content was 1865"Uncle Nat; or The Good Time Which George and Frank Had Trapping Fishing Camping Out etc." by Alfred Oldfellow published two years earlier. A bright very good plus copy with some wear to head and heel of spine and a gift inscription from the year of publication 1868 on a preliminary page. Lea and Shepard unknown books

Landseer Dickes etc. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and in blind with a peregrine falcon in gilt on upper cover. The author was a veterinary surgeon in London and Professor of Animal Medicine. On the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of William Sandilands of Barny Hill. Spine and cover edges a little faded. Slight bruising to the edges. Very good indeed. Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans, London. hardcover

Sports Broadcasters' Assocation: New York Chapter
Proposed Constitution
New York: SBA 1954. 10 pages. Stencil. Though the Association had begun in 1940 they had only a few carlessly produced constitutions. Here was their plan to create one that would deal with all the issues that had arisen in the post-World War II years. They met in the fall of 1954 at Lake Placid under the leadership of E.R. "Curly" Vadeboncoeur with 44 members. Although New York was of the prime importance in the broadcasting industry it was one of th elast states to establish a broadcast associaton. It now was designed to include televison. Article 4 on membership shows why it was still an all white male organization as it specifies that the term "man"or "men" is used seven times. It also had a close relationship with the Baseball Commissioner during the Happy Chandler era as noted in Article 6--Section E. They decided to change the official name to: "The New York State Broadcasters' Association." From its original 44 members it today covers over 300 sports broadcasters in the state of New York. "This award shall go to the man who . has made an outstanding contribution to the world of sports." Included are four reports of annual meetings between 1954-1957. Prominent were John Jerr Chris Shenkel Mel Allen Lindsay Nelson Hy Turkin and a would-be member who was a guest Howard Cosell but admitted at the Oct 20 1954 meeting. Among guest speakers were Walter O'Malley. This was a period when the sports writers were privy to all the scandals that were kept private. As is evident in the Constitution women had no place in their minds in sports reporting. When the first women sportscasters began to be allowed to broadcast in the 1960's the all male TV crews would often try to refuse working with them. Even in the early 1970's Jeannie Morris was not allowed in Press box to cover the Vikings-Bear game during blizzard conditions the only bathroom available to her was the one used by the fans a quarter of the way around the stadium.
