However the bulk of the volume consists of personal memoirs and biographical sketches of King -- with chapters contributed by James D. Hague John Hay William Dean Howells Henry Adams John LaFarge Edmund Clarence Stedman William Crary Brownell Edward Cary Samuel Franklin Emmons Daniel C. Gilman and Rossiter W. Raymond. Bibliography of King's publications. Synoptic Index. When Congress established the United States Geological Survey in 1878 it was King who was put in charge. A series of sketches appearing first in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY and afterward in book form under the caption of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA 1872 and his HELMET OF MAMBRINO in the form of a letter to his friend `Don Horacio' Horace F. Bookplate of the Second Baptist Church St. Louis on front endpaper otherwise clean. Some wear to extremities spine lean paper over rear hinge split but still quite sound. One of the great classics of American mountaineering western Americana and nature writing. King was a geologist and a member of the 1864 California Survey when he made his famous ascent of Mt. Tyndall in the Sierra Nevada which is described here along with ascents of Mt. Whitney and Mt. Shasta and exploration of the Yosemite Valley. "King melded scholarship with carefully crafted descriptions to present a comprehensive and moving narrative of the mountaineering experience. King loved the mountains and hoped that his account would lead to increased preservation efforts but he feared that his book would promote additional tourism and regional degradation. He was right on both accounts" Sierra Nevada Museum. Howes K148; Cowan p. 328; Graff 2329; Neate K21; Zamarano 80 #47. James Osgood hardcover

Two unpublished Polo Scenes by Edward King friend of Eugene V. Connett and the artist was one of a handful most closely associated with the Derrydale Press. Ordeman notes that the Polo Scenes "were printed on the same paper as Mr. King's Belmont Terminal Lithographs and they are of the same size. Although they were signed by the artist none were colored. There is conjecture that Mr. Connett may have asked Mr. King to design these prints but subsequently decided not to publish them in competition with Paul Brown's American Polo Scenes 1930. For reasons that are at present unknown the Edward King polo prints were never offered for sale by the Press." Uncommon and dynamic images. Ordeman p. 68. KING GART Y.; SWITZER BARRY FOREWORD
An Autumn Remembered: Bud Wilkinson's Legendary '56 Sooners
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: 2006. Softcover. Brand new book. In 1956 a group of young mensons of the Great Depressionwere now student athletes in every sense of the phrase. Their young coach was on the verge of an unprecedented winning streak and Bud Wilkinson's '56 Sooners formed the touchstone of the University of Oklahoma's football dynasty. This team was the heart and soul of OU's record 47-straight victories. An Autumn Remembered traces the details of the remarkable '56 season and follows the team into the present through revealing interviews with the principal players. In this stirring account Gary T. King brings to life a journey filled with memories triumph and gloryan autumn truly to be remembered and an experience not to be missed. Barry Switzer Oklahoma's head football coach from 1973 to 1988 led the program to three national championships. Gary T. King is Professor of Psychology at Rose State College in Midwest City Oklahoma. "If you can remember sitting in Memorial Stadium and watching Tommy McDonald snag passes from Jimmy Harris and Billy Pricer opening big holes for Clendon Thomas to run through and Jerry Tubbs and Bob Harrison smashing ball carriers to the turf then certainly you will enjoy reliving this memorable season. If you are too young to have seen the team in person then I know you will definitely enjoy learning about it through the pages of this book. In fact I do not think one has to be a football fan at all to appreciate An Autumn Remembered. The images and emotions evoked here and the inspiration that can be taken extend far beyond the boundaries of the gridiron."Barry Switzer University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 2006 paperback
