‎N.p.: Printed on board the U.S.S. Houston 1938. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Original printed wrappers printed in gold. Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the Houston personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship . We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. ‎New York 1895. 1 p. typed on "President's Office Police Department City of New York" stationery with a few manuscript emendations and corrections. 4to 10 x 8 inches. Lower portion mounted onto rear pastedown of volume III of Roosevelt's Winning the West New York 1894 with volumes I 1889 & II 1889 included each with Dean Sage bookplate moderate wear to covers. 1 p. typed on "President's Office Police Department City of New York" stationery with a few manuscript emendations and corrections. 4to 10 x 8 inches. TR to Dean Sage tipped-in to Volume III. Roosevelt writes as President of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York to angling author Dean Sage: ". I am now striving with infinite pain and labor to finish the fourth volume. You can imagine how hard it is with all my other work. With the ending of this fourth volume I shall have to stop all attempts at historical writing until I go out of politics. You are right about there being no West for me this year either." The letter is included with the first three volumes in first edition of Winning the West. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential. His Ristigouche 1888 which draws upon his long experience fishing the river is one of the pinnacles of nineteenth century fishing book design and production. unknown‎

‎Log of the President's Inspection Cruise through the West Indies on Board the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. 3-14 December 1940‎

‎N.p. Washington D.C. 1941. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Green wrappers; printed in black; stapled. Fine. Blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Rare FDR Log: A Radio Message from Ernest Hemingway. A log of FDR's inspection cruise of naval bases in the British West Indies. The log is a detailed narrative of the President's activities and the progress of the ship he traveled on the Tuscaloosa. As was customary on these cruises Roosevelt combined sport fishing with his official duties. Opposite page 15 a fine portrait of FDR seated with rod in hand is entitled "The President trolls though Mona Passage." The text for 10 December reads: "At 1000 while proceeding through the Mona Passage sped was reduced to 7 knots while the President trolled from the stern. The water here was over 1500 feet deep and the president's decision to try his luck was based mainly on the contents of a radio message which he had received from Ernest Hemingway recommending the locality as one in which many big fish had been caught and suggesting the use of a feathered hook baited with a piece of pork rind. The President trolled for an hour or more without even a strike and so fishing operations were discontinued at 1130 following which speed was increased to 25 knots." In addition to highlights of official business the log records the fishing activities throughout the cruise Harry Hopkins hooks a 36 inch Grouper but as it was landed by Admiral Mcintire it was "not a legitimate catch for determining fishing honors two members of the party having handled the rod." This log identifies Maj. Gen. Edwin L Watson FDR's military aide as "Pa" and so his authorship of an earlier log can now be assigned. We have never seen this log. The only other copy recorded is in the Library of Congress. Halter p. 192 records only Library of Congress copy unknown books‎
