‎Pictorial Clipper. For the Christmas and New Year Holidays 1855-1856.‎

‎Large folded newspaper 21" x 28" pages illustrated 4 pp. Paper is a bit fragile but better quality newsprint helps offset a little edges with tears chips folds and creases but generally not affecting text or illustrations some splits at middle fold 1 1/2" tear in the middle of the paper that goes through the four pages with some loss some soiling and staining especially on bottom of last page. Overall about fair. WILL BE FOLDED WHEN SHIPPED.The highlight of the paper is the coverage of the Tom Hyer and Yankee Sullivan fight which occurred a few years earlier. A large wood engraved illustration shows the two fighters squaring off in the ring. While Sullivan a former political enforcer and convicted felon and a somewhat boastful individual ended up getting knocked out in less than 18 minutes. The fight was fought in Maryland and under the bare-knuckle rules. The paper also contains pictures of other famous fighters of the era including Tom Molineaux Tom Cribb Jem Belcher Johnny Walker and Jack Langan. Molineaux would fight in a losing effort against Tom Cribb for the title of Champion of England which at that time pretty much meant the heavyweight champion of the world. Molineaux was a former slave and would fight for a title almost 100 years before Jack Johnson won the heavyweight title from Tommy Burns. The Pictorial Clipper appears to be a supplement of the New York Clipper which was in business between 1853 and 1924 and had an entertainment focus. books‎

‎BOXING.‎

‎The Art of Manual Defence; or, System of Boxing: Perspicuously Explained in a Series of Lessons, and Illustrated by Plates. By a Pupil both of Humphreys and Mendoza.‎

‎Second edition, 12mo, xxxv, [1, blank], 133, [11, index]pp., with half-title, engraved frontispiece and nine additional full-page engravings showing two boxers fighting (perhaps Dan Mendoza and Richard Humphries), demonstrating the various boxing techniques taught in the text, some light off-setting, a few pages have been trimmed up to the text, especially at the fore-edge, but with no loss, early paper endpapers, nicely bound in full calf, hand sewn headbands, hand tooled edges, hand lettered spine. The author of this guide indicates he seeks to appeal specifically to the gentleman wanting to protect himself from 'the insolence so peculiar to the manners of the lower order of people in this country.' But he has special advice for professional practitioners of the pugilistic art, with hints for preparing for a scheduled fight which include taking 'a pint of best red wine mulled, with a tablespoonful of brandy' on the morning itself. This manual was written at an important juncture in the sport, and focuses on two practitioners who impelled boxing forward greatly - Daniel Mendoza and Richard "The Gentleman Boxer" Humphries, who famously fought three bare-knuckle bouts between 1788 and 1790 (the third of which was the first time spectators were charged an entry-payment to a sporting event). Before Mendoza, boxers generally stood still and merely swapped punches. Mendoza's 'scientific style' consisted of more than simply battering opponents into submission and included much defensive movement. He developed an entirely new style of boxing, incorporating such defensive strategies as what he called 'side-stepping,' moving around, ducking, blocking, and generally avoiding punches. At the time, this was revolutionary, and Mendoza was able to overcome much heavier opponents as a result of this new style. Though he stood only five feet seven inches and weighed only 160 pounds, Mendoza was England's sixteenth Heavyweight Champion from 1792 to 1795, and is the only middleweight to ever win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Mendoza helped transform the popular English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenceless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. Mendoza was second for Tom Molineaux, a freed Virginia slave, in his fights. In 1789 - the year this book was issued in London - he opened his own boxing academy there. Hartley, 1578; Extremely rare, ESTC locates a single copy of the first edition at Yale which is tentatively dated 1784, and two copies of this second edition (British Library and Yale).‎

‎BOXING.‎

‎Wilson's Career, Battles, & Death of Harry Paulson, the Old Nottingham Veteran Pugilist. Height, 5 Feet 7? Inches; Weight, 12 Stones. This indomitable pugilist of the old school of boxes was a youngster of herculean proportions and giant strength...‎

‎Broadside (360 x 240 mm), printed on one side only, paper browned, cut down centre fold and repaired with archival paper, previous sellotape browning visible. Harry Paulson (1819-1890), prize-fighter, born in Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was most famous for his three momentous bouts against Tom Paddock of Redditch which took place between 1851 and 1854, and the fight of over 100 rounds with Tom Sayers, a younger man and the champion of England at the time. After a brief biography we are informed of his fighting career "He next beat Tom Paddock (born 1824, died 1864) for ?25 a-side, at Sedgebrook near Grantham, Sept 23, 1851, in 71 rounds, lasting 95 minutes. They met again, Dec. 16, 1851, at the "Cross of Hands" Belper, Derbyshire, when Paddock won in 86 rounds, 95 minutes... They fought for a third time, for ?100 a-side... when Paddock was again conqueror, in 102 rounds, time, 2 hours 32 minutes. He next entered the lists with that Prince of English boxers, Tom Sayers, for ?50 a-side. This great battle took place at Appledore, in Kent, on Jan. 29 1856, and Sayers was victorious after 3 hours 8 minutes had elapsed, during which time 109 rounds were got through..." We are then given a brief description of Paulson's social life and an account of his death and funeral. It appears that Wilson, an old-established firm of Nottingham printers, also issued similar broadsides for the careers of other boxes: Bendigo, Sayers, Mace, Fryer, Click Soles and others. Apparently unrecorded.‎

‎BOXING. JOHNSON Jack.‎

‎Champion of the World Jack Johnson.‎

‎Chicago: Brandt & Scheible 1909. Offset-lithographic poster 470 x 390 mm en grisaille. Mounted framed and glazed. Central image of Johnson in boxing pose with stars and stripes sash around his waist superimposed over a large laurel wreath either side are oval vignettes one of the log cabin the "Birthplace of Johnson" the other of "Johnson in his Car" the champion had a succession of flashy and fast cars. Lightly browned verso a few superficial creases a small chip from the top margin image unaffected else very good. A remarkably well-preserved example of this uncommon poster celebrating the ascension to the world heavyweight throne of the great African-American boxer. Having spent several years trying to lure heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries who refused to allow a black fighter to challenge for his title into a match Johnson finally won the title from Canadian Tommy Burns in Rushcutter's Bay Australia following a one-sided contest during which Johnson constantly taunted the champion; "Poor little Tommy don't you know how to fight Tommy They said you was the champion Tommy". Visiting Canada the following year he was somewhat more gracious; "Let me say of Mr. Burns a Canadian and one of yourselves that he has done what no one else ever did he gave a black man a chance for the championship. He was beaten but he was game". Johnson's victory made him "the most hated man in America because he was black a winner and he flaunted it all Â… On the eve of the fight writing for the New York Herald Jack London told the world "Burns is a white man and so am I naturally I want the white man to win". But Johnson won and continued to win successfully defending his title for seven years. And each time white America hated him more". Hauser The Black Lights: Inside the World of Professional Boxing p.64. Evidently cheaply produced for display in those bars and club-rooms where the Galveston Giant was venerated rather than despised it is extremely uncommon to find this piece in such pristine condition. ‎Boxing: Joe Louis.‎

‎Roar of the Crowd. All the Great Fights of Joe Louis. His Rise… His Fall… Championship.‎

‎Boxing bill poster advertisement for Joe Louis fight films 9"x 12" one sheet. Some aging and browning a few chips at the edges; otherwise very good. This advertisement for a Joe Louis fight movie promises "all the great Joe Louis Fights in one picture." Louis is pictured in in two photos one a promotional pose with Jim Braddock and a second picture of Louis outside the ring as the ref counts out one of his opponents. This film was to be shown at the Dixie Theatre and the fights were to include his battles with Baer Carnera Levinsky Schmeling and Braddock. While the small poster is not dated it is probably before the second Schmeling fight which he won by first round knockout since there is no reference to it.‎
