Noticeable toning and spotting to wrappers minor edge wear. Light toning to first text leaf. A rare collection of offprints of three articles which first appeared in the English publication Labour News from the U.S. in 1955 on the subject of automation in the American car industry along with a glossary of terms compiled by the United Auto Workers UAW. Two of the articles were authored by Walter P. Reuther president of the UAW and the third was written by D.J. Davis vice president of the Ford Motor Company. The articles were presented by the authors to a special joint subcommittee of the United States Congress. Reuther reports from the labor perspective writing that automation is welcomed by labor unions but he also points out the many problems of the practice. He also discusses the impending effects of electronic computers on society the responsibilities of employers the productivity of capital the need for growth in consumer markets the need for small business aid and more. Reuther suggests policies such as a more equitable distribution of the tax burden adequate unemployment compensation improved social security a higher minimum wage and other improvements that will satisfy the labor market in the advent of more automation. Davis's article provides the Ford Motor Company's perspective on the issue their definition of automation as well as its economics and effects. The glossary comes from a pamphlet printed by the UAW the same year and provides definitions of a range of terms such as automation servomechanism cybernetics and robot among others. We locate no other copies of this collection of offprints on automation from 1955 providing early information on the effects of computers and perhaps foretelling the advent of artificial intelligence on American industry. The United commercial tractor: a startling and radically new method of hauling completely revolutionizing present methods.
Grand Rapids MI: United Motors Co. Etheridge Printers ca. 1916. Oblong 8vo. 9.25 x 6.25 in. 12 pp. printed in blue & black. Tan-coloured illustrated softcovers cover art of United Motors truck in blue black & tan front cover yapp fore-edges minor soiling to far right fore-edge slight shelfwear still VG copy. First edition of this very scarce dealer’s showroom catalogue for the pre-World War I United Motors Co. filled with factory photos advertising their innovative 6-ton tractor and semi-trailer configurations as considerable cost savings. For 2/3 of the cost of a 5-ton truck the retailer shipper etc. could field a tractor and trailer for less than $ 3300.00. Founded originally as the United Motor Trucks Co. before World War I as a division of the United Light & Railways Co. conglomerate to not only produce trucks and utility vehicles for their own needs but to meet burgeoning demand brought on by improving roads and fast-growing commercial demands before and after World War I. By 1922 Hulswit Kanary and Eckburg were building and selling United Trucks powered by a four-cylinder Continental Engine the lightest model featuring a worm drive and the others often fitted still with chain drives moving to shaft drive and by 1925 would be manufacturing what they called the “Highway Special.†Hulswit 1875-1933 was the president and organizer of the United Light & Railways Co. which held 13 railroad and public service gas & electric utilities and corporations in five states and was forced out of his company in 1926. By that time Kanary had decamped to Hollywood California and the truck manufacturing unit was spun off to ACME Motor Truck Co. of Cadillac MI which continued the badge for a short time. Advertisements for their truck line cease by 1928. Very few of the original company catalogues survive some business records and material can be found in the Austin Automobile Co. Original illustrated delegates and visitors dashboard card for the Bnai Brith Convention District No. 4 in Butte, Montana. The weekend meeting was at the Bnai Brith District Grand Lodge there. An interesting example of Nazi-era protection for American Jews, this ticket was issued with the endorsement of the Butte Chief of Police and the Mayor, who welcomed the attendees with a key to the city and protection from the police. Interestingly, Butte was a Jewish-friendly town from the beginning: Henry Jacobs, a Jewish immigrant from Baden, Germany, who fought as a Confederate soldier at the Battle of Vicksburg, served as Buttes first mayor from 1879 to 1880; he also served as a school trustee, president of the Hebrew Benevolent Association and president of the local chapter of the International Order of Foresters. Bnai Brith is the largest and oldest Jewish fraternal organization in the world. SUBJECTS: Jewish fraternal organizations. OCLC doesnt list any copies. Very good condition on glossy paper. (AMR-54-9)

The Campsites portion provided an excellent quick reference for available spots in the Big Horn Black Hills Bridger Devil’s Tower Grand Teton Medicine Bow Shoshone and Yellowstone National Parks & Forests.
