Through the Land of the Shining Mountains.
Helena: Montana State Highway Commission 1936. First edition Octavo promotional pamphlet measuring 8 x 9 1/2 inches but folded in half and with text printed in columns. Photographically illustrated wrappers. Very good and clean no issues. OCLC only records three copies. The text extolling the grandeur of Montana was written by Bob Fletcher Plans Engineer for the State Highway Commission. His purpose was to increase tourism to the state. Along with the historical markers Fletcher wrote the department s promotional material including Headin for the Hills! 1937 and Picture Writing 1938 published the first of the state s colorful highway maps in 1934 and established! visitors centers at Montana s ports of entry. He knew his Montanans. The opening photograph of Tick Fall in Glacier National Park was taken by famed photographer T. J. Hileman and as Hileman specialized in portraits of Native Americans it is more then likely the he was responsible for the two panels bakd and front that bear photographic illustrations of Native Americans. On every page but three there are historical artistic vignettes by "Shoup." Irvin "Shorty" Shope was raised on a ranch in Montana and fell under the influence of the western painter Edgar S. Paxson while still in high school. Between 1919 and 1930 Shope worked as a cowboy on Montana ranches while studying art through a correspondence course. Beginning in 1925 he first exhibited his paintings in Montana and received some commercial assignments. Having sold his first painting at the age of thirty Shope returned to college majoring in art and history. In Helena Montana Shope began working as a commercial artist for the state government and at that time also spent a few months studying under the well-known illustrator Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art in New York. Shope's usual subjects were cowboys the Blackfoot Indians mountains and deserts and all his works have a distinctly western look. The eleven paintings he created for The Northwest Paper Company in 1959 and 1960 also have the look of the west about them often featuring the Mountie with Indians ranchers and cattle. (SOUTHERN MONTANA OIL COMPANY) LUCIER, A G [photographer]
Panoramic Photograph Entitled- "Southern Montana Oil Co. Elk Basin Oil Field Photo by Lucier Powell Wyo. April 1 1917.".
Powell WY: Southern Montana Oil Company. 1917. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring measuring 39 x 10 inches caption in the plate in white. Small stain to the blank upper margin else very good.First of all we have to love this photograph for having a man with his arms outspread placed in the very middle of the image. It bespeaks a person very exalted to be present in a deserted and beautiful landscape. Southern Montana Oil Company incorporated on October 30 1916 and had established offices in Missoula Montana by 1917. All of its directors came from Anaconda a region known for its copper deposits. The directors I.W. Walker A.F. Mavity R.A. Cobban F. Shannon and T.P. Stewart decided to pursue petroleum riches in southern Wyoming.By April 1917 the new exploration company was drilling wells in the Elk Basin oilfield which crosses the state line between Carbon County Montana and Park County Wyoming. The giant Elk Basin field has a dramatic history of its own as noted in First Wyoming Oil Wells. Southern Montana Oil successfully completed a well that produced 25 barrels of oil a day.y November 1917 company manager George L. Means reported to Colorado’s Fairplay Flume newspaper that drilling operations were getting underway on eight 40-acre tracts near Meeteetse Wyoming once a hideout for outlaw Butch Cassidy. Drilling commercially successful wells proved elusive however and by 1921 Southern Montana Oil Company stock was offered at only two cents per share. After the company failed its stock was described in subsequent inheritance litigation as valueless. The photographer A. G. Lucier was one of the first in the area. He opened his photography studio in Powell in 1909. He was later hired by Tex Holms to be the photographer of his famous 18-day tours of Yellowstone Park. He was also published heavily in the local paper the Powell Tribune. He also tried his hand at motion pictures filming 25000 feet of film at the Pine Ridge Agency. For his work in the Elk Basin Columbia University sent him a congratulatory and flattering letter. By 1920 he and his wife had set up a stand near the current Buffalo Bill Visitor's center and sold photographs of the dPark and it fauna andflora to tourists. Southern Montana Oil Company. unknown

Collection of Seventy-Six Checks Written to Chinese Businesses in Montana 1870-1872
Montana Territory 1872. Lot of seventy-six checks measuring 8 ½ x 4 inches with vignette illustration of a prospector and his dog. With one additional document relating to the Hershfield account with the Bank of California. Most checks issued to “Gold Coin†and drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. The checks are printed by Robert F. Macey Stationery in New York. Fine condition with an occasional tear and chip. Fine. In 1870 one out of ten residents of Montana Territory were of Chinese descent a figure that would decline precipitously in the ensuing decades until Chinese-Americans made up less than one percent of the population around the turn of the century. Chinese immigrants arrived in Montana following the discovery of gold in Bannack and Virginia City in the 1860s. Many of the Chinese immigrants settled and worked in the Big Belt Mountains east of Helena including the Cave Cooper Oregon and Confederate Gulches.

Collected here are a collection of seventy six checks from Helena in 1870 and 1871 written to Chinese-owned businesses and cashed at the L.H. Hershfield and Brother bank in Helena and drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. The checks contain the names of over thirty different Chinese merchants operating in Montana at the time - with some companies like Wan Yuen and Co. having multiple checks present. As a group they offer an interesting map of the Chinese-American business community operating at the time and the duplicate checks which sometimes have notes on the verso giving a representation of the relative size of the firms and individuals involved.

The LH Hershfield & Bro. Banking House in Helena operated from 1865 to 1882 in Last Chance Gulch near the corner of Bridge and Warren Streets. It later became the Merchants National Bank from 1882-1898 then the Union Bank and Trust Company from 1898 to 1859. Hershfield also had a banking operation in Virginia City during the Gold Rush period. Overall the group documents the Chinese-American community during the period and the breadth of economic activities of Chinese-Americans in Montana’s early mining camps. unknown
