Dieser Vermerk bezieht sich auf den in München tätigen Landschaftsmaler L. Thiersch (1825 - 1909). Beide Künstler, Rottmann und Thiersch, waren in derselben Stadt tätig und werden sich wohl gekannt und Arbeiten ausgetauscht haben. Durch diese Provenienz darf die Zuordnung an Leopold Rottmann als sicher gelten. Farbfrisches Aquarell, das in der Landschaftsauffassung dem älteren Bruder, Carl Rottmann (1797 - 1850), verpflichtet ist.

br. Che cosa sono le montagne italiane? Quale identità portano con sé? Alpi e Appennini disegnano, insieme, una sorta di grande punto interrogativo. Che ha due risposte diverse. Un viaggio di ottomila chilometri che cavalca la lunga gobba montuosa della Balena-Italia lungo Alpi e Appennini, dal golfo del Quarnaro (Fiume) a Capo Sud (punto più meridionale della Penisola). Esso parte dal mare, arriva sul mare, naviga come un transatlantico con due murate affacciate sul mare, e lungo tutto il percorso evoca metafore marine, come di chi veleggiando forse vola - in un immenso arcipelago emerso. Trovi valli dove non esiste elettricità, grandi vecchi come Bonatti o Rigoni Stern, ferrovie abitate da mufloni, case cantoniere e paracarri da leggenda, bivacchi sotto la pioggia in fondo a caverne, santuari dove divinità pre-romane sbucano continuamente dietro ai santi del calendario. E poi parroci bracconieri, custodi di rifugi leggendari, musicanti in cerca di radici come Francesco Guccini o Vinicio Capossela. Un'Italia di quota, dove la tv sembra raccontare storie di un altro pianeta. Le due parti del racconto, Alpi e Appennini, hanno andatura e metrica diversa. Le Alpi sono pilastri visibili, famosi; sono fatte di monoliti bene illuminati e sono transitate da grandi strade. Gli Appennini no: sono arcani, spopolati, dimenticati, nonostante in essi si annidi l'identità profonda della Nazione. Storie che scivolano e volano insieme ai luoghi e parlano della parte più segreta del nostro paese.
