Brossura editoriale con sovraccoperta illustrata (difetti), cm 18x25, pp XX 304 (4), 34 tavole in nero fuori testo, in fine schizzo orografico dell’Everest e del Ghiacciaio Rongbuk e carta più volte ripiegata con l’itinerario della spedizione. Sovraccoperta con strappi e piccole mancanze, ornata di etichetta della Libreria Casanova sul dorso; internamente qualche arrossamento ma completo e ben conservato. Prima edizione francese, tradotta da Émile Gaillard e A. De Gruchy, del resoconto della spedizione inglese del 1922, prima a tentare espressamente la scalata alla vetta dell’Everest dopo la ricognizione di Charles Howard-Bury dell’anno precedente. Charles Bruce, alpinista esperto e militare di carriera in India, presidente dell’Alpine Club dal 1923 al 1925, fu a capo di questo tentativo che vide la partecipazione, come il precedente e il successivo del 1924, di George Mallory. La spedizione fu la prima ad utilizzare bombole d’ossigeno, e si concluse senza successo col terzo sfortunato assalto alla cima, interrotto dopo una tragica valanga in cui trovarono la morte sette portatori. Pur senza raggiungere l’obiettivo, gli inglesi toccarono la più alta quota mai raggiunta (8326 metri, record battuto dalla terza missione britannica, diretta da Bruce nel 1924). Al racconto riassuntivo dell’impresa seguono i capitoli dedicati ai tentativi di ascensione scritti da George Mallory (primo e terzo) e George Finch, e alcune note sull’acclimamento in quota e la civiltà tibetana a cura del medico della spedizione Theodore Howard Somervell; l’apparato iconografico si compone di immagini di carattere alpinistico ed etnografico, con numerose fotografie di monasteri e religiosi tibetani. Diario dei primi due viaggi di esplorazione nel Karakorum di Cesare Calciati, topografo e naturalista nelle spedizioni dei coniugi americani Bullock-Workman (1908 e 1911), pubblicato postumo dalla moglie Anguissola Calciati Scotti. Piccola firma di appartenenza con data al bordo superiore del frontespizio. Alcune lievi, ininfluenti tracce di ossidazione all' interno ma volume ben conservato in solida e gradevole legatura.
