Rara prima edizione - completa degli allegati - dell'importante relazione di De Filippi della spedizione al Karakorum del Duca degli Abruzzi, che, nel 1909, pur non arrivando alla vetta del K2, salì, primo, sino ai 7.500 m del Bride Peak. Filippo DE FILIPPI (1869 - 1938), professore di medicina operatoria all'Università di Bologna, studioso di fisiologia, nel 1897 partecipò col duca degli Abruzzi alla spedizione sul monte Sant'Elia in Alaska e ne stese la relazione. Nel 1903 traversò il Caucaso e nel 1909 partecipò col duca degli Abruzzi alla spedizione in Nepal, sul massiccio del Karakorum, verso la vetta del K2. Negli anni 1913-1914 diresse questa spedizione italiana nel Baltistan e nel Turkestan cinesi.

La salita, da parte di coloro che non vogliono rinunciare all'ultima chance, i problemi di tante cordate indipendenti in quota, il sogno della vetta che diventa realtà. Infine la bufera, l'allucinante dramma a 8000 metri, senza più viveri né gas - dunque senz'acqua - prigionieri per cinque giorni nelle piccole tende, Julie si «addormenta» per sempre, poi, man mano, anche i compagni muoiono. I tre superstiti, sull'orlo del collasso, iniziano una discesa allucinante nella tormenta, sotto il perenne pericolo di valanghe, poi sullo sperone Abruzzi coperto di verglas. Solo in due arrivano vivi alla base della montagna. In questo racconto, ricco di pathos ma anche di humour, la montagna non è vissuta come oggetto da conquistare, ma piuttosto come entità da rispettare e da amare e di cui, salendo, si arriva a far parte. Un rapporto con la montagna sviluppatosi in decenni di grande alpinismo sulle vette del mondo, nel cuore di chi ha vissuto questa tragedia e della quale, forse per caso, o per miracolo, o... non è rimasto vittima".
