‎- L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue 2 novembre 1947, 21x26,9cm, 1 page sur une feuille. - Lettre autographe signée de René Char de 11 lignes écrites à l'encre noire. Pliures inhérentes à l'envoi postal. René Char écrit cette lettre à René Wintzen, an­cien rédacteur en chef de Documents, revue des questions allemandes. René Wintzen commence alors à faire paraître une revue littéraire, Vent debout, dont il a envoyé à Char un exemplaire. Le poète l'encourage et lui dit de persévérer tout en « discriminant le bon grain de l'ivraie ». René Char s'excuse de ne pas avoir de texte achevé à lui fournir : « je le regrette. J'écris peu et ne suis qu'accessoirement poète ! ». Cette mise en avant d'une écriture rare correspond à l'idée que René Char se fait de la poésie et qu'il op­pose au travail prôné par Valéry. René Char écrit peu et se soumet aux exigences de la poésie : « Je ne triche ja­mais. Il m'est arrivé d'attendre six mois un mot ou une formule [...]. C'est l'exigence de la poésie. Une exigence absolue. Aucun mot n'est gratuit. » (entretien entre René Char et Édith Mora, Nouvelles littéraires, 1965). L'auteur montre également une distanciation vis-à-vis de la poésie en cette fin de décennie. En effet, Char expérimente alors des genres nouveaux : il s'es­saie au ballet avec La Conjuration en avril 1947, mais aussi au théâtre avec Le Soleil des eaux, à la musique en compagnie de Boulez, et enfin au cinéma. Il ne quitte toutefois jamais la poésie et publie la même année Le Poème pulvérisé. Sehr gutes, frisches Ex. - A new text of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs has long been needed. It is now nearly forty years since Dr. Sinker published a reproduction of the Cambridge MS. with the variants of the Oxford MS. Ten years later he edited collations of the Vatican and Patmos MSS. Dr. Sinker's own work was very accurate so far as it went, but he made no attempt to deal with the relations of the MSS. to each other and to the archetypes from which they were derived. The MSS. evidence was, indeed, hardly adequate for such a task, and, moreover, the presuppositions under which he worked?as also all other students of the Testaments till within the last few years, i.e. that the Testaments were written originally in Greek and by a Christian author?precluded the possibility of ever attaining to a satisfactory text. For deliverance from the latter misleading presupposition, that the Testaments were of Christian authorship, scholars are indebted in the main to the meritorious articles of F. C. Conybeare. By means of the Armenian Version this scholar established the high probability that all the Christian allusions in the Testaments are the interpolations of Christian scribes in an originally Jewish work, and therein confirmed the earlier hypothesis of Grabe and Schnapp. My own study of the Armenian Version has more than convinced me of the validity of Conybeare's contention. In the prosecution of this study I have spared no pains. I have used the collations of the three Armenian MSS. which Mr. Conybeare has cited in his articles, and which he most kindly placed at my service, and likewise six other MSS., two of which I have collated for the first time. For deliverance from the other false presupposition, that the Testaments were written originally in Greek, the first steps were taken by Grabe and Kohler when they put forward the suggestion of a Hebrew original, but neither scholar advanced any evidence in support of his hypothesis. ‎4to (270 x 220 mm). French manuscript, ink and watercolour on paper. (125) ff. with 10 written pages and (82) pp. with pasted, hand-coloured printed coats of arms. Contemporary full calf. All edges red. Armorial with the coats of arms of 270 Lyonnais city officials from 1595 to 1750, with later additions to 1755. The title-page with the dedication is followed by a 9-page alphabetical index of family names and the years of service of 258 officials, many serving several terms, until 1750. A full-page coat of arms of the dedicatee David Flachat (1708-54), "Écuyer" (Steward) of Lyon in 1749/50, heads the arms section. On all but five of the 81 pages, the coats of arms are organized in tree diagrams with the "prévôt des marchands" (dean of the city guilds, the de facto mayor) on top and his four deputies or "échevins" (jurymen) in a single row below. The five other pages record only two "échevins". The coats of arms include the names, titles, and tenure of office in letterpress printing (with two handwritten exceptions). All coats of arms and captions or empty cartouches, for the few handwritten records, were printed, hand-coloured, cut out, and pasted into the manuscript. Starting with the title-page, all pages are framed within hand-drawn brown and yellow borders. - The offices of the "prévôt des marchands" and "échevin" of Lyon were established by King Henry IV of France in 1595, as stated in the full title of the manuscript, and the men elected for the two-year terms were automatically ennobled. The city-government of Lyon was organized as decreed by Henry IV until 1790, following the example of Paris. - In his office as official chronicler and herald of Lyon, Pierre-François Chaussonet produced a very limited number of almost identical copies of this armorial, dedicated to members of the city government such as Flachat. One copy is in the municipal archive of Lyon (shelfmark 17Fi 129), another was sold in 2011 at Kapandji Morhange in Paris (lot 155, €2600). - Binding rubbed and chafed, edges and spine scuffed. Pages foxed with some staining, several pages wavy from the glue, some minor tears.‎
