‎Palimpsests are texts from which the primary text has been effaced to make room for fresh writing. The practice was particularly important in the early Middle Ages, when numerous, often precious, books were subjected to this treatment. As a result, many ancient texts lay hidden in European libraries for centuries. Ever since the first palimpsests were discovered in the seventeenth century, scholars have been fascinated by the possibility of discovering hitherto unknown texts. For a long time, the lower script of palimpsests could only be brought back to the light of day through the use of chemical reagents that proved very detrimental to the manuscripts. The great advance away from these destructive techniques came at the beginning of the twentieth century with the application of ultra-violet photography. Today, striking advances in this field are again being made with the development of digital imaging. The contributions in this volume focus mainly on the cultural evidence offered by palimpsests from the early Middle Ages. Some contributors have examined particular manuscripts in great detail (the London palimpsest of Jerome's Chronicle or the Munich palimpsest codex from Benediktbeuern); others have looked at specific types of texts that have suffered deletion in this way (liturgical palimpsests, Carolingian letters). ‎Cette monographie - la premiere du genre - est une reflexion sur les miniatures hippiatriques grecques, ou se demander pour quel usage et comment le lecteur medieval les ? lisait ? , conduit necessairement a essayer d'expliciter les rapports complexes qu'entretiennent l'illustration et le texte. Apres une presentation generale de la litterature hippiatrique, l'auteur elucide des questions liees a la composition du Corpus hippiatricorum graecorum. L'interet est principalement porte sur les differentes recensions d'un de ses abreges, l'Epitome, et sur sa place par rapport au Corpus hippiatricorum. Ainsi est-on amene a mieux discerner l'histoire de ce traite et celle des deux seuls manuscrits illustres. Vient ensuite un chapitre consacre a l'etude minutieuse de ces deux temoins, le Leidensus Vossianus graecus Q. 50 et le Parisinus graecus 2244. Paleographie et codicologie s'en melent, qui revisent bien des opinions recues sur l'origine des manuscrits. Un re-examen des miniatures des deux temoins est alors possible. Par-dela analyses stylistique et iconographique, trop souvent attachees a la quete absolue de l'archetype, l'auteur analyse les rapports texte/image pour etablir, en definitive, le modus operandi des imagiers et determiner les fonctions concretes pour lesquelles les figures ont ete pensees et concues. De ce regard synchronique decoule naturellement une etude sur la facon dont le lecteur medieval utilisait les images. Les conclusions pratiques se voient donc confrontees aux theories antiques et medievales sur le role de l'image et celui des mots. Ainsi l'image hippiatrique ne saurait etre seulement une simple illustration du texte : elle appartient a l'oeuvre tout autant. L'ouvrage s'adresse aux antiquisants et aux medievistes, historiens de lart et de la medecine veterinaire antique et moderne ainsi qu'aux philologues et a quiconque s'interesse a l'histoire de l'illustration scientifique et des relations entre l'homme et l'animal. ‎This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. The period c. 1260-1320 marks the emergence and the flowering of what has come to be known as the ?courtly style? in French painting, whose dynamic vitality is manifest throughout the region we now call France. By the end of this period French art had assimilated a rich variety of regional works and styles. New texts had been introduced to a range of patrons, and patterns to be played out in the following centuries were in place. This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. While the royal, courtly, academic and ecclesiastical patrons were critical to the cultural and artistic production of the capital, books made in provincial centres manifest an independence and originality that can be attributed to fruitful interaction with neighbouring cultures?the linguistic, literary, and artistic traditions of England in the north and west, Navarre, Aragon, the county of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Majorca in the Pyrenean regions, and the Empire along the eastern borders, from the principalities of North Italy and the Alpine regions to Burgundy, Hainaut and Flanders. Ecclesiastical boundaries cut across political divisions, contributing different sets of allegiances that impacted upon book culture in other ways. The Provinces of Reims and Tarantaise included fiefs of Empire, while Narbonne (to 1317) encompassed dioceses in Aragon, and the Provinces of Bordeaux and Tours lay in part in lands held by the English. The religious orders and the universities offered other sets of governing structures and vehicles of influence and reception. Royal and courtly patrons took their place in this period alongside churchmen and women and layfolk from the burgeoning bourgeois class, many of whom are known from ownership notes or inventories. Yet some of the finest books of the period were made for people whose identity remains obscure. Similarly the names of craftsmen?scribes, decorators, illuminators?are often known from their signatures in the books they made or from payments and other records, yet many distinguished works are the products of anonymous creators. These years witnessed an explosition in the range of texts that were deemed worthy of illustraton, extending far beyond the usual liturgical and devotional material to include works of science, medicine, law, philosophy, history and literature in verse and prose, offering a wealth of material for comparative study which is only beginning to be exploited in modern scholarship. This book is organized according to production in regional centres based on stylistic analysis and by comparative tables of the illustration of liturgical and devotional books, and a selection of romances, legal and historical works. Part 1 comprises the Introduction, the Lists of the Producers (scribes, illuminators and decorators) and Patrons whose names are known, followed by a Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the North (Paris and the Province of Sens, Normandy, the Province of Reims). Part 2 contains the Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the East, South-East, South-West, West and Centre, followed by the Comparative Tables and Index of Manuscripts Cited. Alison Stones is Professor of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a membre correspondant etranger of the Societe nationale des antiquaires de France.‎

‎If there is one work, in all of Saint-Saens musical output that supremely captures the disposition so typical of the composer, it is the Carnival of the Animals. The collection De main de maitre showcases the facsimiles of the most prestigious scores of the Music Department of the National Library of France. Camille Saint-Saens? extremely long career as a virtuoso, as a brilliant pianist and organist (no fewer than seventy-six years of concerts) and his daunting catalogue of works (close to six hundred are known) have helped shape the image of him as a tutelary figure, omnipresent in the musical landscape of his time, the uncontested master of French music, showered with honours and glory, yet the champion of what was, in the young 20th century, an outmoded aesthetic. Such an image ignores, however, that from the outset of his career, at the end of the 1850s, until the 1890s, Saint-Saens was, on the contrary, regarded in the artistic world as an agitator, as a propagator of new ideas and as an intermediary between French and Germanic cultures. Republican from his earliest days, he was a major figure in musical life, involved in many concert societies, most notably the Societe nationale de musique, which he founded in 1871. He was also a polemicist, whose quill was much feared and who used the press as his vehicle of choice, to disseminate his ideas, attract public attention, and conquer new audiences. Similarly, if the image of the ?official? Saint-Saens, at home with the stage and the institutions and their etiquette, has endured, that of the ?intimate? Saint-Saens, known by a faithful few for his sparkling conversation, his sharp humour and taste for puns, has been lost. If there is one work, in all of Saint-Saens? musical output that supremely captures the disposition so typical of the composer, it is the Carnival of the Animals. Dedicated to the autograph manuscript of Camille Saint-Saens? famous Carnival of the Animals (1835-1921), this volume sheds a distinctive light on the musician?s personality. Completed in February 1886, The Carnival of the Animals was created for friends and performers close to Saint-Saens and was performed about fifteen times between 1886 and 1894 to a small audience. Because Camille Saint-Saens feared that his ?zoological fantasy? would damage his reputation, the work was published in its entirety only after his death. Since then, its immense popularity has continued to grow, so much so that it is now enjoyed by music lovers and the general public alike. Presented by Marie-Gabrielle Soret, a specialist of Camille Saint-Saens, who provides a detailed description of the work and the context of its creation, the facsimile includes the fourteen pieces of The Carnival of the Animals. It reveals the composer?s handwriting, all the performance directions as he noted them, but also to the playful animal drawings with which he decorated his score ? a fish for ?Aquarium, the skeleton of a dinosaur for ?Fossiles?, the pale blue pencil silhouette of a swan to illustrate the famous Swan. ‎The medieval Hebrew exegesis in its entirety is indisputably a major achievement in the work of the Jewish sages. The exegesis, designed firstly to elucidate the meaning of biblical terms, whose language was not always understood by members of the Jewish communities scattered throughout the Christian and Muslim world, and then to annotate them for academic and practical purposes, played an important role in enhancing understanding of the sacred texts and adapting them to the needs of schools and communities. The author defines the genre of the exegetic commentary and characterises the methods employed: he traces the stages of its development across the different socio-cultural backgrounds of medieval Judaism; he draws up specific critical criteria; he follows the spread of the genre in time and space, weighs up modern editions and shows us the contribution these commentaries make to the history of the Middle Ages. At the end of the book is a bibliography detailing the principal commentaries and tables showing how the genre is chronologically, geographically and thematically divided. The book provides a critical introduction to a category of sources which has been too long neglected by historians.<br>Dans son ensemble, l'exegese hebraique medievale est sans doute une realisation majeure de l'oeuvre des sages juifs. ‎Le Catalogue decrit les manuscrits du monastere de la Panaghia situe sur l?ile de Chalki, manuscrits qui sont maintenant conserves au Patriarcat ?cumenique a Istanbul. Le premier volume contient, apres une ample Introduction, la description des 171 manuscrits grecs qui constituent ce fonds et se termine par les index d?usage, tres detailles ; le second volume est reserve aux illustrations, soit 295 planches photographiques, la plupart du temps en couleur : 259 planches pour les ecritures et les decors, 36 planches pour les reliures. Repondant aux normes scientifiques modernes, il remplace les catalogues anterieurs, ceux du metropolite Athenagoras (1921-22) et d?Aemilianos Tsakopoulos (1953). Se repartissant entre le 10e et le 18e siecle, les manuscrits de la Panaghia ont principalement un contenu liturgique et religieux. La litterature classique n?est cependant pas absente, et quelques miscellanees particulierement complexes sont d?un grand interet. La richesse de la collection tient aux conditions de sa formation. Elle rassemble en effet des manuscrits de trois origines : manuscrits copies sur l?ile de Chalki entre la fin du 15e siecle et le milieu du 17e pour les besoins de la communaute, manuscrits apportes par les moines du Prodrome de Sozopolis sur la mer Noire lors de leur exil de 1629, manuscrits offerts par des particuliers, des eveques ou des patriarches. Les abondantes annotations qu?ils portent en font une source documentaire de premier ordre pour ecrire l?histoire des communautes monastiques situees a Constantinople et dans sa region (en particulier dans la mer de Marmara) d?une part, a Sozopolis sur la rive occidentale de la mer Noire d?autre part. ‎This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.‎

‎The Festschrift volume Classica et Beneventana, presented to Virginia Brown on the occasion of her 65th birthday, brings together twenty-one insightful new essays by leading scholars devoted to the fields of classical reception and Latin palaeography. The authors investigate a wide-range of topics such as the development and application of the Beneventan script, comparative codicology, uses of early liturgical manuscripts, medieval artes and biblical texts and their readers, and the reception and dissemination of classical texts during the Italian Renaissance. Since 1970, Virginia Brown has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. She is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities in classical reception and Latin palaeography. Her numerous publications on the Beneventan script have dramatically altered our knowledge of the dissemination of this southern Italian book hand from 800 to 1600. Her editorial work for the Catalogus translationum et commentariorum, as a member of the Editorial Board and since 1985 as Editor-in-Chief, has resulted in several learned volumes tracing the fortuna and study of classical authors from antiquity to the year 1600. As editor of Mediaeval Studies from 1974 to 1988, she single-handedly produced tomes noted for their scholarly rigor and acumen. This collection of essays serves as a fitting tribute to a scholar who, via her scholarly research and editorial work, has done so much to advance the fields of palaeography, codicology, and the history of classical scholarship.‎
