‎Du milieu du VIIIe s. a 1536, date de la dissolution des monasteres anglais par Henry VIII, diverses eglises d?Europe occidentale (principalement de Benedictins et de chanoines) eurent coutume de solliciter des prieres pour un/des membre(s) defunt(s) de leur communaute au moyen de brefs ou de rouleaux mortuaires, transmis par des brevigeruli (ou porte-rouleaux). Les brefs mortuaires, reduits souvent a des languettes de parchemin, ecrits en nombre, etaient laisses aux eglises visitees. Quant aux rouleaux mortuaires, ils etaient constitues d?un nombre variable de feuilles de parchemin (le tout pouvant atteindre 30 m de long) ; chacun d?entre eux debutait par un faire-part de deces (ou encyclique) ; a tour de role, les eglises visitees par le porte-rouleau apposaient un accuse de reception (ou titre) ; frequemment, ils etaient opisthographes, c?est a dire ecrits sur les deux faces. L?encyclique peut etre precedee, a partir du XIIIe s., d?une peinture ou de dessins (souvent d?excellente qualite) et suivie, a compter du XIVe s., d?une liste des confraternites conclues par l?eglise expeditrice (sorte de liste-programme pour le porte-rouleau). Si la plupart des brefs mortuaires ont disparu en raison de leur petite taille, les rouleaux des morts ont eux-memes beaucoup souffert au cours des ages, nombre d?entre eux ayant meme ete depeces pour servir de feuilles de garde a des mss. Au total, on ne conserve (en original, par des copies ou des editions anciennes) qu?environ 450 pieces, alors que certainement des milliers ont circule. Les plus anciens originaux connus sont des fragments de la seconde moitie du Xe s. Plusieurs criteres ont prevalu pour le choix des quelque 110 planches presentees. Tout d?abord, bien sur, un critere paleographique, car l?ensemble des ecritures est date et localise avec precision, ou du moins datable avec une fourchette chronologique etroite. On trouvera dans ce volume des ecritures livresques, des mentions avec lettres enclavees (a rapprocher de celles des pages-titres des mss. ou des inscriptions lapidaires) comme des ecritures cursives ou personnelles ; les pieces retenues ont les origines les plus diverses, francaises, anglaises, belges, hollandaises, allemandes, etc. Ensuite, un critere historique : une copie du debut du XIXe s. temoigne de la mise en circulation de rouleaux mortuaires par l?abbaye de Ripoll, malheureusement incendiee peu apres ; ou encore un titre de Noyon montre l?aprete des luttes intercommunautaires a propos des reliques. Egalement, un interet documentaire, comme la charte scellee, tenant lieu de ? rotulus ? , de l?abbesse de Pielenhofen (Baviere ; 1435). Ou encore, un interet artistique avec la reproduction des magnifiques dessins ornant le debut du rouleau de Lucy de Vere, prieure de Castle Hedingham (Essex ; vers 1230) ou prepares pour le rouleau de John Islip, abbe de Westminster (vers 1532). Dans bien des cas, les itineraires peuvent etre etablis avec une grande precision : une carte retrace celui d?un rouleau mortuaire expedie en 1406 par Saint-Bavon de Gand qui, en 20 mois, recueillit plus de 800 titres d?Amsterdam au nord a Barcelone au sud. Enfin, sont reproduits divers brefs mortuaires, documents a peu pres ignores jusqu?alors. Languages : French, Latin.‎

‎Separe du Breviaire et du Psautier, le Livre d'Heures etait devenu des le XIIIe siecle le livre de devotion du laic. Il correspondait a l'extension de la pratique de la lecture dans les couches de la societe, alliee a un evident detachement par rapport a l'emprise de l'eglise. L'intensification du culte porte a la Vierge Marie firent d'elle le theme central du Livre d'Heures qui s'organisa autour du petit Office qui la celebrait. Il contient aussi le textes d'autres Offices, dedies en general au Saint Esprit, a la Croix et aux morts ainsi que toute une serie de prieres et invocations variant selon la devotion de leur possesseur et commanditaire. Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. ‎This study of the two-volume Lambeth Bible, one of the premier Romanesque giant bibles, concerns itself with its textual makeup as well as its magnificent illumination. It reports the results of research on texts and imagery found in over a hundred English and continental Romanesque Bibles. Comparative study of the prefatory materials in these Bibles yielded significant new understandings of their importance and represents a major conclusion of this study. They are important aids in establishing places of origin of biblical manuscripts and in the study of the illumination chosen for them. Exhaustive study of the prologues, chapter lists, and other miscellaneous texts in both volumes of the Lambeth Bible and other English Bibles, has helped to establish that the Lambeth Bible was not made at St. Albans or at Christ Church, Canterbury, two of the sites often suggested for its production. Six beautiful miniatures and thirty-one historiated initials remain in the Lambeth Bible so examination of their iconography is a major aspect of this book. This study includes both a search for visual and textual models for the imagery used in the Lambeth Bible and an investigation of the significance of those subjects in the twelfth century. In a surprising number of cases a relationship existed between the prologue preceding a biblical book and the imagery with which it was illuminated. Thus what initially seemed to be isolated instances of drawing inspiration from the prologues was in fact a customary practice of the makers of the Lambeth Bible. Languages : French, English.‎

‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. ‎The present volume analyzes the functions of landscape imagery within medieval Northern European manuscript illumination, and also takes into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. ‎This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. The period c. 1260-1320 marks the emergence and the flowering of what has come to be known as the ?courtly style? in French painting, whose dynamic vitality is manifest throughout the region we now call France. By the end of this period French art had assimilated a rich variety of regional works and styles. New texts had been introduced to a range of patrons, and patterns to be played out in the following centuries were in place. This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. While the royal, courtly, academic and ecclesiastical patrons were critical to the cultural and artistic production of the capital, books made in provincial centres manifest an independence and originality that can be attributed to fruitful interaction with neighbouring cultures?the linguistic, literary, and artistic traditions of England in the north and west, Navarre, Aragon, the county of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Majorca in the Pyrenean regions, and the Empire along the eastern borders, from the principalities of North Italy and the Alpine regions to Burgundy, Hainaut and Flanders. Ecclesiastical boundaries cut across political divisions, contributing different sets of allegiances that impacted upon book culture in other ways. The Provinces of Reims and Tarantaise included fiefs of Empire, while Narbonne (to 1317) encompassed dioceses in Aragon, and the Provinces of Bordeaux and Tours lay in part in lands held by the English. The religious orders and the universities offered other sets of governing structures and vehicles of influence and reception. Royal and courtly patrons took their place in this period alongside churchmen and women and layfolk from the burgeoning bourgeois class, many of whom are known from ownership notes or inventories. Yet some of the finest books of the period were made for people whose identity remains obscure. Similarly the names of craftsmen?scribes, decorators, illuminators?are often known from their signatures in the books they made or from payments and other records, yet many distinguished works are the products of anonymous creators. These years witnessed an explosition in the range of texts that were deemed worthy of illustraton, extending far beyond the usual liturgical and devotional material to include works of science, medicine, law, philosophy, history and literature in verse and prose, offering a wealth of material for comparative study which is only beginning to be exploited in modern scholarship. This book is organized according to production in regional centres based on stylistic analysis and by comparative tables of the illustration of liturgical and devotional books, and a selection of romances, legal and historical works. Part 1 comprises the Introduction, the Lists of the Producers (scribes, illuminators and decorators) and Patrons whose names are known, followed by a Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the North (Paris and the Province of Sens, Normandy, the Province of Reims). Part 2 contains the Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the East, South-East, South-West, West and Centre, followed by the Comparative Tables and Index of Manuscripts Cited.
