Ensemble comprenant : 1 carte postale autographe signée de Léon Reppelin (auteur de Sous les Ailes de la Mort, poèmes du front), datée du 31 août 1916 / 1 LAS de l'oncle d'un sous-lieutenant : "Monsieur le député... le 22 septembre dernier, j'apprenais par un de ses camarades que mon neveu, Louis de Montera, docteur en droit, sous-lieutenant de réserve au 1er tirailleurs, avait été tué le 12 septembre à Boucharesnes d'une balle en pleine tête au moment où, avec sa section de mitrailleurs, il atteignait la tranchée allemande. La confirmation de sa mort ne nous a pas encore été annoncée et sa pauvre mère affolée me demande si elle est bien réelle. ... Si j'ai bonne mémoire, M. MANUSCRIT EN GRANDE PARTIE AUTOGRAPHE D'UNE VERSION PRIMITIVE INÉDITE DU CHAPITRE la Colline fête son roi. Provient de prestigieuse collection de Louis Barthou qui fit luxueusement relier le manuscrit par Marius Michel. ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉ : "à Louis Barthou en souvenir de notre dîner d'hier et de ses paroles amicales de fragment de La Colline fête son roi, Ch. V. de La Colline vendredi matin, 30 mai 1919 Maurice Barres" Le manuscrit est rédigé en partie de la main de Barrès (25 feuillets) et en partie de la main de Beauvillard, l'instituteur qui tenait là permanence de député de l'écrivain, avec les corrections autographes de Barrès (49 feuillets). Il s'agit d'une version tardive, relativement proche (dans le temps et le contenu) du texte définitif. Claire-Bompaire Evesque, s'appuyant sur les documents de travail --correspondances, notes, brouillons-- de Barrès conservés à la BnF, documente en effet les nombreuses étapes de la genèse de La Colline, dont le projet est amorcé dès 1907 : après une période de recherche documentaire, Barrès procède à une "mise en idées" (enrichissement à travers des sources secondaires). Suit une étape de "mise en forme", au cours de laquelle les passages rédigés se mêlent à de simples indications de contenus narratif et style. Ce manuscrit, s'il diffère sensiblement de la version finale, est exempt de ces "morceaux à faire". Comparant le manuscrit aux texte de l'édition originale de 1913, on remarque une réorganisation globale du chapitre, avec des éléments de description et paragraphes déplacés, qui témoigne des doutes de Barrès. Claire Bompaire-Evesque note "Les hésitations au sujet de lagencement des séquences du texte sont sensibles sur les esquisses de chapitres particuliers." (p. 137) En outre, le manuscrit s'interrompt abruptement lorsque la communauté des frères Baillard se rend à la chapelle pour rendre grâce à la Vierge. Dans la version finale, l'événement est éludé, et le chapitre se conclut sur 2 pages de réflexion (pp. 119-121) dont seul le dernier paragraphe apparaît dans le manuscrit. Les transformations relèvent principalement de la forme : élimination des répétitions, agglomération de phrases, élucidations, simplifications. Ainsi un passage (pp. 55 & 58) est entièrement coupé : "Pour détourner et pour relever les esprits, [Léopold] tire de sa poche soigneusement enveloppés de papier de soie sept petits paquets. Ce sont autant de beaux chapelets de Saint Hubert qu'il remet à chacun des assistants. Et puis il se tourne vers sa voisine de droite." Il apparait ensuite à la p.57 du manuscrit, la version simplifiée, proche du texte de l'édition originale, "Cependant Léopold n'était pas homme à supporter longtemps le caractère profane que prenait la petite réunion. Pour détourner et pour relever les esprits :" De nombreux repentirs témoignent d'un important travail sur le style. On note ainsi la présence de quelques versions alternatives d'une même description : Tout d'abord, au dos de la p. 50, barré au crayon : "François réalisait l'idée d'un chevalier rustaud, ou plutôt d'un écuyer loyal et emporté, tout en mouvement, bon pour se dévouer, mais de petit jugement". Puis aux pp. 44 et 45 du manuscrit, une nouvelle version, sensiblement différente et proche du texte de l'édition originale : "C'était charmant d'écouter François et de voir apparaître le fond limpide de cette nature qui ne pense qu'à admirer et à servir. Il présentait le type idéal du clerc et de l'écuyer." puis "C'était charmant de voir comment au fond limpide de ces sortes de nature qui ne pensent qu'à admirer et à servir s'était formée une inébranlable conviction. Il présentait le type idéal du clerc et de l'écuyer. On l'aurait vu indifféremment sur la paille de la rue du Fouarre, écoutant les leçons d'Abélard, ou couché en travers de la tente du chevalier son suzerain. [barré] à l'écouter, le spectateur le plus défiant eut recueilli la conviction que ce grand enfant crédule était de la [...]" La plus importante transformation concerne un dialogue entre deux villageois qui s'entretiennent des finances de la communauté de Léopold (manuscrit pp. 17-19, EO p. 103-105). Ce passage, qui porte déjà dans la manuscrit la trace de nombreux repentirs, est dans l'édition originale entièrement retravaillé pour "colorer" la voix des personnages et donner corps à la colline de Sion. Qu'est-ce qu'il a encore avec lui. Une religieuse et deux frères. Ils ont bien soigné le jardin et les quelques parcelles de terre qui leur reste encore çà et là, on ne pas dire le contraire. Mais qu'est-ce que ce petitjournalà côté de toute cette population de frères et de soeurs qu'ils dirigeaient autrefois et ces pauvres champs épars seuls reliques de leur immense domaine ? Et encore, dit M. Haye, les pommes de terre qu'ils y mangent n'ont pas poussé dans leur champ. Par crainte des créanciers, ils ont tout mis au nom des soeurs. Et celles-ci n'ont pu acheter qu'avec de l'argent emprunté." (manuscrit, pp. 17-19) Devient ainsi : Peuh ! Répondit M. Haye, les cinq religieuses leur sont dévouées ; ils ont les deux frères, bien vigoureux. A eux sept, voyez, ils ont pas mal travaillé le jardin. Sans doute, voilà des pommes de terre pour leur hiver, mais entre nous, ce n'est pas dans leur champ qu'elles ont poussé.... Que voulez-vous dire, Morizot ? interrompit M. Haye en arrêtant ses yeux francs sur le visage un peu chafouin du maître d'école. Ce que vous savez comme moi. Pour échapper aux créanciers, Léopold a tout mis au nom des soeurs, et de plus rien n'est payé. Tout ici appartient à la prêteuse, une prêteuse pas commode, mademoiselle L'Huiller, vous savez bien. O, pp. 103-104) Autre point de détail qui contribue à ancrer le récit dans son "terroir", le chien "Tambour" devient, dans l'édition originale, "la chienne aimée de Léopold, la Mouya, comme elle se nomme, ce qui veut dire, en patois, la meilleure" (p. 97-98). Mais au-delà de ces transformations d'ordre formel, on assiste également à un effacement du narrateur, avec la coupe d'une intervention à la première personne ("ils eussent donné, j'imagine, à de pâles citadins une impression un peu animale" p. 39 du manuscrit, devient "ils eussent fourni à des citadins une impression un peu animale") et de plusieurs appels au "nous" : "la médiocrité de ces strophes ne doit pas nous désenchanter, non plus que l'accent lorrain de la chanteuse" apparaît ainsi dans l'édition originale comme "la médiocrité de ces strophes composées pour les pèlerins, qui les égrènent encore en parcourant les sentiers de a colline, ne pouvait pas, non plus que l'accent lorrain de la chanteuse, désenchanter ce petit monde." Ce nouveau narrateur brosse un portrait moins cynique de Léopold. Comparons : "Un sourire d'extrême bienveillance ne quitte pas ses lèvres, le sourire des images de piété, la face bonhomie prêtée à Pierre Fourier dans les petits livres d'hagiographie. Evidemment il s'applique à rappeler les saints personnages de jadis. Et c'est aussi avec une solennité convenue qu'il prononce ce petit discours" (manuscrit pp. 35-36) Au texte de l'édition originale : "Un sourire d'extrême bienveillance ne quitte pas ses lèvres, le sourire des images de piété, celui que les livres d'hagiographie prêtent aux saints personnages de jadis. Tout à coup, il frappe avec son couteau sur son verre. Chacun se tait et lui, d'une voix solennelle: " (p. 109) Des allusions à la désapprobation de l'évêché sont également éliminées, resserrant le point-de-vue autour des "convertis" de Sion. Voir ce passage inédit : "Cet exode fut très mal vu de l'évêché ; il n'étonna pas les villages. On y était habitué au sans gêne des Messieurs Baillard, à leurs longues absences, depuis des années que tous les trois et soeur Thérèse battaient les routes de l'univers pour leurs quêtes. Et si l'autorité ecclésiastique laissa paraître son mécontentement, les paysans n'en eurent souci. Que leur faisait à eux ce lointain évêque [...]" (pp. 12-13 du manuscrit) 15 feuillets du manuscrit sont rédigés au dos de feuillets réemployés sur lesquels figurent des passages d'une version antérieure du chapitre, ainsi que des passages manuscrits issus d'autres chapitres du roman. "La Colline inspirée a été saluée par la critique comme le chef-d'oeuvre de la maturité. Narrant une histoire réelle qui met en jeu les aspirations religieuses les plus profondes, l'écrivain semble avoir trouvé le point d'équilibre entre l'art dé donner vie à des personnages, qui est selon la tradition le propre du roman, et la rêverie autour des grandes questions, qui est l'idéologie au sens barrésien ou peut-être tout simplement la poésie." (Claire BOMPAIRE-EVESQUE - Les choix de Barrés dans La Colline inspirée) Mais cet équilibre a été atteint au prix d'un long et dure travail, commencé dès 1907, Barres ne donna la version définitive qu'en 1913 : "Voici un gros manuscrit que jache?ve de mettre au net (...) Il repre?sente bien des anne?es de ma vie et jy pourrais en engloutir plus dune. Il y a ainsi de ces sujets qui sont des gouffres " (Mes Cahiers, tome XVII). La quasi totalité des archives relatives à l'écriture de la Colline Inspirée - documentations, manuscrits, épreuve - ont été légué à la BnF par MmeBazin, héritière de la famille Barrès. Offert en 1919 par Maurice Barres au magistrat, homme politique et fin bibliophile Louis Barthou, le chapitre que nous présentons fait parti des rares manuscrits importants qui ont échappé à ce don. French translation of an essay on the Latin transcription of the Arabic alphabet by the renowned oriental scholar H. A. Barb, the first translator of the "Sharaf-nama". The slim work was published in German in 1860 as "Die Transcription des arabischen Alphabetes". Although no French translation of this work is known to have appeared in print, the corrections and annotations scattered throughout the manuscript suggest that it was either an effort by Barb himself - although at least two hands can be identified for the main text - or drawn up by his students and merely revised by Barb. Apart from the preface and chapters 1 and 2 as well as parts of chapters 3 and 4 of the "Transcription", it includes a 41-page section in Arabic script that does not appear in the German publication. While the corrections in the preface and the first two chapters are done in pencil, those found in chapters 3 and 4 are executed in red crayon, mainly numbering the examples in the German publication, here merely referenced by the scribe. The Arabic section (possibly in a third hand) shows several corrections in pencil as well as annotations in blue crayon, including several question marks. - Barb, a native of Galicia, served as the director of Vienna's Oriental Academy (now the Diplomatic Academy). He converted to Catholicism in 1884 while in his first year of law at the University of Vienna and rose in the Austrian civil service to the rank of Hofrat, a distinction rarely accorded to those of Jewish ancestry. As a scholar he received recognition both at home and abroad for his contributions towards the study of Persian and oriental languages. - Large tear to lower cover, small tears to spine. Interior somewhat browned and brownstained throughout, otherwise very well preserved. A unique survival.

Manuscript Signed Letter, dated 21 January 1897, discussing matters pertaining to the settlement era of Perth, Western Australia. 8vo. Two double-leafs, 5 pages. Very good condition. Fascinating content such as a poverty, drought, general health issues in Perth from the conditions, problems of the homeless, and in contrast the increase in land values, and prospects for youngsters, The writer also talks of the Music Society and of singing the Messiah at Christmas. Written by M. Barigh of Havelock Street, her home located on a hill above the central town, who may have been a relative of Richard Henry Barigh, an immigrant to Australia, possibly originally as a convict. Excerpts from the letter: "Lately we have had a water famine and all day long the water is cut off but we fill a tank and so it does not cause us much inconvenience... We do not like W.A. half so much as N.Z. it is too hot and dry and this town is not healthy." "The place must have grown half since we came and building is going on all the time and the values of property increasing - our land cost about four pounds a foot and a lady has just bought this piece adjoining ours and given over eleven pounds for it and thinks she has got it cheap." "There are scores of people here with nothing who a little while since in Melbourne were living in luxury." End Excerpts. Perth had only been established since 1829. In 1850, Western Australia was opened to convicts at the request of farming and business people looking for cheap labour. Queen Victoria announced the city status of Perth in 1856.

Baroque pattern book and album
of the blanket maker Johann Franz Hörmannsperger. Vienna, 1736.
Oblong folio (390 x 252 mm). 118 numbered ff. (but 115: ff. 96, 106, and 112 skipped). Calligraphic preface by Hörmannsperger, 58 full-page textile designs by the same, mostly in red, blue, green, and gilt (including one folded, double-page sized specimen and 4 ff. with 2 designs each), 7 splendid gouache washes raised in gilt and silver; bound in between these are a total of 52 engravings on 48 plates, all in splendid contemporary colour raised in gilt and silver. Contemp. marbled boards. Unique, museum-quality document of late Baroque craftsmanship among the urban Third Estate: apart from 58 meticulously executed textile designs, the album contains seven large-format gouaches showing the self-assured author practising his trade in his workshop, advertising and selling his wares to customers, as well as playing music and even bowling, but also attending the general meeting of the Viennese blanket makers. The engravings which Hörmannsperger inserted between his own works all show mundane subjects (dwarves, soldiers, caricatures, etc.): thus, his autograph textile designs and gouaches are interleaved with some of the rarest and most charming pieces produced by the 1720's Augsburg school of engraving. - The album is introduced by a self-portrait of the 26-year-old Hörmannsperger in his workshop (with his compass and one of the later-included textile designs lying on the table); on the opposite page he offers a brief preface to the volume: "for true art speaks for the master: here is a book, all mine, with many drawings, as they will be seen, all drawn by me, though I say so myself, with much time, labour, and trouble [...] I, Johann Frantz Hörmansperger" (transl.). The captions to the splendid gouaches prove the author's humour (sometimes bawdy) as well as a trait of surprising self-confidence. Pitching his self-plaited blanket to a female customer, he addresses her: "My dear lady, here's a fine blanket for you - you may well stretch yourself under this: one and a half ells wide and two in length; perfect for flipping over with your husband underneath" (transl., f. 84). Another image shows him selling saddlecloths to military officers ("we'll have these and take them into battle", f. 86); yet another shows him bowling in a Baroque garden at the weekend ("All gay and jolly, for we are journeymen of the trade: and so the virgins may be; they will not be bored - here is red wine and white, so well we may make merry", f. 94) and dancing ("Be merry all. Musicians play! Thus do the blanket makers frolic and dance with pretty girls until their shoes may fall to pieces", f. 104). The final leaf shows an apprentice received into the society of blanket makers at their quarterly general assembly ("The blanket makers convene today to discuss what concerns the society: the young man must have learned his trade; he is not too tall nor too small. But he must put in his time, until he is made a journeyman", f. 118). Some of Hörmannsperger's ornamental designs, created with the use of a compass, include centerpieces showing armorial or figural motifs; one design (f. 113) is apparently a commission for Emperor Charles VI (bearing his monogram and Imperial insignia); according to the later caption, it was indeed executed for him. - Between his own works Hörmannsperger bound engravings by the great Augsburg masters of his age, all splendidly coloured and raised in gilt and silver: eight engravings from Elias Bäck's dwarf series (fencing school, drinking, gluttony, and tobacco addiction), a complete cycle of the seasons and the life stages of man by Martin Engelbrecht ("Der Menschen Jahr Veränderung"), a total of 19 of the famous engravings by Pfeffel, Schmidt, and Engelbrecht showing a soldier's life (two with movable parts), as well as a fine broadsheet by Albrecht Schmidt showing the seven Honest Swabians, and finally an untitled eight-page cycle showing the female tempers. - The Austrian and especially the Viennese bedclothes were known for their high quality throughout the continent. During their golden age in the 18th century they were exported to all European courts, as well as to Greece, Turkey, and many oriental countries. At the time this album was drawn up, there were ten masters of the profession in Vienna alone creating blankets and mattresses as well as backpacks and cuirasses. - Provenance: acquired in 1893 "from Mr Josef Lang's son-in-law" by the bedclothes merchant Josef Pauly, supplier to the Royal and Imperial court, and passed on by him to Mr. Junghofer, chairman of the bedclothes makers' cooperative, in 1896 (cf. Pauly's autograph dedication note on the flyleaf); last in an Austrian private collection. Boards imperceptibly restored at lower spine end; interior slightly fingerstained; slight tears to two leaves, but in excellent state of preservation altogether.

Ensemble comprenant : 1 carte postale autographe signée de Léon Reppelin (auteur de Sous les Ailes de la Mort, poèmes du front), datée du 31 août 1916 / 1 LAS de l'oncle d'un sous-lieutenant : "Monsieur le député... le 22 septembre dernier, j'apprenais par un de ses camarades que mon neveu, Louis de Montera, docteur en droit, sous-lieutenant de réserve au 1er tirailleurs, avait été tué le 12 septembre à Boucharesnes d'une balle en pleine tête au moment où, avec sa section de mitrailleurs, il atteignait la tranchée allemande. La confirmation de sa mort ne nous a pas encore été annoncée et sa pauvre mère affolée me demande si elle est bien réelle. ... Si j'ai bonne mémoire, M. ALS with Nautical Content - New Navigational Tables by Beaufort and Raper
One Original Signed Letter from Sir John Barrow to Davies Gilbert. 8vo. 1 page on a single-leaf, dated 22 August, (content reveals the year is 1831). Leaf measures approximately 18cm x 11,5cm (7 inches x 4.5 inches). Very good condition. In 1831, the Royal Astronomical Society deemed it imperative for advancement in navigation, to form "New Requisite Tables" which would be introduced in the impending publication of the New Nautical Almanack. At the behest of Captain Beaufort, Hydrographer to the Admiralty, RN Lieutenant Henry Raper, a revered authority on navigation, was in charge of constructing the charts. Here Sir John Barrow, Secretary of the Admiralty, is evidently responding to an enquiry by Davies Gilbert, mathematician and President of the Royal Society. Barrow assures Gilbert that he has directed the question to Captain Francis Beaufort, who is an integral member of the committee charged with making the nautical charts. Signed in the original by Sir John Barrow, the letter states: "The subject of the New Requisite Tables is in the hands of the Astronomical Society and has been for some time, but as yet they have not made any report. I have shown your note to Capt Beaufort who is one of the Committee." A report published in the Nautical Magazine, March 1831, corroborates the significance of this work, and the involvement of such leading authorities in navigation. Manuscript
