Armorial bookplate of Michael Tyson on front fixed endpapers showing a shield with three crowns resting against a sprouting tree stump. The Rev. Michael Tyson 1740-1780 a don at Corpus Christi College Cambridge and an active fellow of the Society of Antiquaries was an amateur etcher who reproduced portraits and created facsimilies of historical documents otherwise inaccessible in college collections. Written below that is "to Samuel Henley." The Rev. Samuel Henley 1740-1815 at the beginning of the American Revolution left Virginia for England where among other things he joined the Society of Antiquaries and met the Rev. Michael Tyson. Armorial bookplate of the Rev. Richard Francis Colton over the Tyson bookplate on vol. 1. Colton d. 1880 was the minister of the Church of Our Savior in Jenkintown Pa. Inscribed on front free endpaper of each volume: "Frank Colton" and "Gregory B. Keen 1880." Gregory B. Keen became the librarian of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1897. Generally very good. Rare first edition of Orlando Furioso translated by the Elizabethan courtier and poet Sir John Harington 1560-1612 - the first English version of Ludovico Ariosto's 1454-1553 famous epic poem - here with its 47 full-page engravings enriched with exceptionally fine contemporary hand-coloring complete with extensive silver and gold accents and giving every appearance of being a presentation copy. Hand-coloring of this quality is outstandingly rare in any English work of this period and such an extensive suite of illustrations is very unusual for purely literary works. Containing "the best known engraved illustrations in an English book before 1700" Hodnett p. 46 Harington's Orlando Furioso represents a landmark in engraving in England an achievement that Harington himself highlighted in his prefatory comments on the "vse of the Pictures" in the book noting that its images "are all cut in brasse and most of them by the best workemen of that kinde" and that he had "not seene anie made in England better nor in deed any of this kinde in any booke." He further states that although England had produced some impressive illustrated volumes "all their figures are cut in wood & none in metall and in that respect inferior to these" fol. Ar. In these remarks "Harington gives us the first critical comment on book illustrating by an Englishman" Hodnett p. 46 and by citing the fine English woodcut books of "Liuy Gesner Alciats emblemes a booke de Spectris in Latin & in our tong the Chronicles the booke of Martyrs the book of hauking and hunting and M. Library: Late in his career John Baskerville printed an edition of Orlando Furioso for the Molini brothers an Italian printing firm based in Paris. This beautiful four-volume set of Ariosto's 50000 line poem is illustrated with forty-six engraving plus a frontispiece designed by some of the most celebrated artists of that time. A new engraving begins each new episode of the author's work and the artists appear to have been given much freedom in their designs. The twenty-one artists don't often get credit and so here's the complete list. Bindings are solid text is clean throughout all volumes. Front and rear hinges on vol 1 and rear hinge on vol 4 have been mended with rice paper. All other hinges are fragile but holding. Leather and gilt on spines is starting to chip but all are still legible. First published in Ferrara 1516 in 40 cantos and in its complete form of 46 cantos in 1532. FINE BINDING of contemporary red morocco each cover with a fine border of triple fillets the spine in six compartments with five raised bands gilt-lettered in two the others decorated with borders of fine gilt fillets surrounding a single gilt daisy all edges gilt attributed to Derome #500 in an early hand on the verso of the front free endpaper dated 1780. Limited issue ONE OF ONE HUNDRED LARGE-PAPER COPIES AND AN ATTRACTIVE SET printed by the celebrated Baskerville press founded in Birmingham England by John Baskerville 1706-1775 in 1757 with an edition of Virgil. Baskerville designed his own typeface and used it to great effect in his magnum opus the Baskerville Bible. In the preface to this edition Pietro Molini extolls the excellence of his edition 'on the grounds of the correctness of its text the diligence of his printer the 'notissimo Giovanni Baskerville' and the collaboration of the most celebrated artists of London and Paris' Ray. The artists who created the magnificent plates in these volumes were Gian Battista Cipriani 1727-1785 from London who contributed 14 stipple-engraved plates by Francesco Bartolozzi 1727-1815 and Jean-Michel Moreau 1741-1815 the most sought-after and celebrated Parisian illustrator of the time.
