He is best known as the author of the romance epic Orlando Furioso 1516. The poem a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato describes the adventures of Charlemagne Orlando and the Franks as they battle against the Saracens with diversions into many sideplots. Front board is elaborately decorated in black gold and silver gilt with an image of Roland riding a griffin through the night sky over a city the city scene encircled by an oval border with a simple floral pattern. Titling above is stamped to a banner supported by cherubs and the whole is surrounded by a vine border with green men at corners. Spine is capped with burgundy leather spine label; titling is embossed to a standard on the end of a spear being stabbed into the throat of a dragon by another cherub. The dragon is seated atop a pedestal itself topping an oval border containing the editor and illustrator's names supported by a winged head. 636pp. German. Numerous beautiful engravings and plates by Gustave Doré. A good book. Both joints split about an inch from head and front joint split three inches from food. Head of spine frayed and slightly erose. Foot torn from front joint to center spine about one inch from foot and from rear joint to center spine about half an inch from foot; very tip leather frayed with small holes. Spine title label chipped at bottom edge. Front joint a bit rubbed. Decorative front board cloth worn at front edge. Front board gilt and stamping a bit faded. About 2x3-inch light stain over tail of griffon. Quarter-inch spot to bottom edge of front board. Corners very gently bumped. Foxing particularly to half-title and title page and moderately throughout. Three <1/8-inch white spots to bottom inner edge of rear board else inside near fine. Drexel on the front paste-down; from the library of Jacques Levy his sale Sotheby's 20th April 2012 lot 10 Limited issue number 35 of 40 copies printed entirely on papier de Chine. 'Orlando Furioso' was the last of the great folios illustrated by Dore for Hachette. Dore drew his illustrations on paper and not directly on the wood blocks and so giving the artist more freedom in his creations than previously. Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" is one of the great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance literature. First published in Ferrara 1516 in 40 cantos and in its complete form of 46 cantos in 1532. "Orlando Furioso" or "Mad Orlando" is a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's unfinished romance "Orlando Innamorato" "Orlando in Love" published posthumously in 1495. Orlando himself is very loosely based on Roland of "The Song of Roland" the oldest surviving major work of French literature a heroic knight in Charlemagne's court intermingled with Arthurian and other influences. Orlando is driven "Furioso" or mad with love for the beautiful Angelica and must be restored to sanity in time to save Paris from the Moslem hordes. Orlando is driven "Furioso" or mad with love for the beautiful Angelica and must be restored to sanity in time to save Paris from the Moslem hordes. FINE BINDING of contemporary red morocco each cover with a fine border of triple fillets the spine in six compartments with five raised bands gilt-lettered in two the others decorated with borders of fine gilt fillets surrounding a single gilt daisy all edges gilt attributed to Derome #500 in an early hand on the verso of the front free endpaper dated 1780. Limited issue ONE OF ONE HUNDRED LARGE-PAPER COPIES AND AN ATTRACTIVE SET printed by the celebrated Baskerville press founded in Birmingham England by John Baskerville 1706-1775 in 1757 with an edition of Virgil. Baskerville designed his own typeface and used it to great effect in his magnum opus the Baskerville Bible. In the preface to this edition Pietro Molini extolls the excellence of his edition 'on the grounds of the correctness of its text the diligence of his printer the 'notissimo Giovanni Baskerville' and the collaboration of the most celebrated artists of London and Paris' Ray. The artists who created the magnificent plates in these volumes were Gian Battista Cipriani 1727-1785 from London who contributed 14 stipple-engraved plates by Francesco Bartolozzi 1727-1815 and Jean-Michel Moreau 1741-1815 the most sought-after and celebrated Parisian illustrator of the time.
