Barbusse Henri; Wray Fitzwater Trans
Under Fire. The Story of a Squad; & Light
London United Kingdom: J M Dent & Co 1929. His 2 most famous works published as one volume. "Barbusse gained fame - and notoriety - with the publication of Le Feu in 1916 published as Under Fire in English in what was one of the earliest memoirs to critique the French rationale for war and to establish a firmly anti-war stance. For all that he had voluntarily enlisted for wartime service in 1914 his memoir emphasized the lamentable suffering and disillusion of the average French soldier. A widespread international success his book went on to win the Prix Goncourt. His subsequent work similarly focused on moral and political aspects including Clart Light published in 1919. He established a post-war movement as a means of stirring other writers worldwide to address social and political affairs." CONDITION Burgundy bds with Black tile and battle scene cameo to front mild wear to ends and tips pp ix 654. Bright copy with light foxing to ends and edges Ownership stamt to 3 pages at prelims of 'Headquarters 1st Btn. Auckland Regt. " and ex libris plate to ffep. First Edition Thus. Cloth. "In his 1928 book Voici ce qu'on a fait de la Géorgie Barbusse praised post-sovietization political social and economic conditions in Georgia triggering a critical response from the Georgian émigré Dathico Charachidze who published in 1929 Barbusse les Soviets et la Géorgie with a sympathetic preface by Karl Kautsky" Wikipedia. The Constructivist style of the design by O. BARBUSSE Henri
