The novel's title characters are friends since birth who fall in love. The story is set on the island of Mauritius under French rule then named Île de France. Written on the eve of the French Revolution the novel is recognized as Bernardin's finest work. It records the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the artificial sentimentality of the French upper classes in the late eighteenth century. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre lived on the island for a time and based part of the novel on a shipwreck he witnessed there.;<br /> <br><br /> <br><br /> The translation is by Jane Dalton. Cf. Cloth folding protective box. <br/> <br/>In the original picturesque and romantic novel two fatherless children are brought up in innocence and poverty far from society on lle de France Mauritius. Virginie dies in a shipwreck refusing to disrobe as this would require her to swim naked in the presence of a sailor who could rescue her. "Although excessively sentimental this little work contains many charming passages especially the descriptions in which Rousseau's influence can be seen of an idyllic life and strange surroundings. It had an immense vogue was translated into many languages and still retains its popular fame. Bonaparte considered it the language of the souls and he pensioned and decorated the author" Oxford/French. <br/> <br/>In Pastor's dramatic version there is a happy ending in keeping with the demands of the Madrid theatre audience and in keeping with turn-of-the 18th century sentimentality which was replacing romanticism. The lasting importance of the Pastor version is due to its anti-slavery content. The character of the blackman Zavi laments ".tristemente nos condena á la esclavitud" clearly articulates a desire for equality of all races. <br/> <br/>This early example of abolitionist doctrine the slave trade was outlawed in Britain in 1803 and in Spain in 1817 reflects Spain's long role as the major exporter of slaves to the New World. This gradually came to an end due to British abolitionist pressure and the rise of an educated Spanish middle class a class that grew involved in social causes presented through the church the coffee houses and occasionally as here the theatre.<br/> <br/>There are two original editions: the Pastor version priority unknown. Printed by Thomas Son & Thomas the famed Massachusetts printer Isaiah Thomas in conjunction with his son Isaiah Thomas Jr. the present volume has an engraved frontispiece done by Samuel Hill depicting Philocles in Samos.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the separate issue of vol.
