Binding tight and solid. Melville was Chief Engineer on the original Jeannette expedition. This expedition launched only shortly after the famous wreck of the Jeannette captained by Lieut. Commander DeLong. Greatly detailed and an important historical account. George Wallace Melville January 10 1841 March 17 1912 was an American engineer Arctic explorer and author. As chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering he headed a time of great expansion technological progress and change often in defiance of the conservative element of the Navy hierarchy. He superintended the design of 120 ships and introduced the water-tube boiler the triple-screw propulsion system vertical engines the floating repair ship and the "distilling ship." Appointed engineer in chief of the Navy Melville reformed the service entirely putting Navy engineers on a professional rather than an artisan footing. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . hardcover

SIGNED. 556pp. Quarto 30 cm Dark brown leather with raised bands a gilt stamped title on the spine a gold vignette on the front board and embossed decorative borders on the covers. Beveled edges. All edges gilt. Original owner's name stamped in gilt on the front board. The extremities are rubbed and the underlying boards are exposed at the top fore edge corners of the covers. The endpapers are soiled and the plates are occasionally offset. There are multiple closed tears along the edges of the panoramic view at the folds with the longest tear measuring 2" long. The plate at p. 341 has a small loss from the inside border followed by a 1 1/2" closed tear in the illustration. Complete all colored plates sheets and maps are present. Odd volume. Hardcover quarter leather dark brown calf over paper marbled over boards. 4to. xv 555 pp. Illustrated with a b/w engraved frontispiece three b/w engraved fold-maps of Chile one engraved multiple-fold panoramic view from Santa Lucia that has been partially hand coloured a full page b/w engraved map three b/w engraved city plans and five b/w engraved drawings. Part of a six volume set though volumes four and five were not published. Five compartment spine with four raised ribs. Black leather label with gilt short title pasted into compartment two. Volume number stamped in black in compartment four. Text block is moderately age toned and lightly foxed but is otherwise clean unmarked and square. The boards and spine are worn and rubbed with some loss of material. Crack in the bottom of the front hinge runs about one third up the length. Corners bumped and frayed. Spine creased.
