LA DOMENICA DEL CORRIERE. 15 maggio 1955. Anno 57 - N. 20.

'Punch, or The London Charivari' [Mark Lemon (1809-1870), editor; John Leech; Charles Kean; William Williams (1788-1865), Radica
Punch Letter headed 'Copy' in contemporary hand from 'X.' to 'Mr. Editor' of Punch.
1 May 1859. 12mo 4 pp. Bifolium. Watermarked 'TOWGOOD'S SUPER FINE 1859'. Eighty-seven lines of text. Text clear and complete on aged and grubby paper. With little hope of influencing the editor of Punch the author feels compelled to 'write and tell you what I and many others think about your Publication and the malignant spite you display towards individuals who happen to incur your wrath'. This 'malignity' he feels 'must be derived from that murderous old ruffian from whom your publication takes its name and which alone prevents it being an influential publication. Men laugh at the jokes in it and admire the skill of Mr. Leech and his assistants but II have yet to find the Man whose opinions were ever changed by anything he saw in "Punch".' He gives two examples of 'many instances of individuals who have been persecuted' by the magazine: the actor Charles Kean and 'Mr Williams of Lambeth'. What had Kean 'done to incur the wrath of "Punch" Simply offended one of its staff'. As for Williams he had stated 'in a Speech to the Electors of Lambeth . that he had been offered a Title which he rejected - now that was nothing but the truth for you know very well that a Baronetcy really was offered to Mr Williams and rejected'. The author accuses 'Punch' of being 'ready enough to make yourself a mere tool of corruption . trying to do that by ridicule which those in power could not do by flattery'. Quotes 'the advice given this day by the "Weekly Dispatch" to the "Saturday Review" before concluding 'You need not make any funny remarks about any grammatical errors that may appear in this letter. If there are any I admit them for I do not profess to be a Scholar'. 1 May 1859. unknown

( Dumas, Alexandre ) Williams, Henry Llewellyn
D'ARTAGNAN THE KING MAKER
D'ARTAGNAN THE KING MAKER Street & Smith 1901 first edition some light soiling but a bright vg copy in the publishers original color pictorial stamped cloth and quite uncommon. Illustrated by Charles Grunwald. "This sequel to THE THREE MUSKETEERS was actually written by Henry Llewellyn Williams who translated many works of Alexandre Dumas during the late 19th century including the sole published English translations of Comte de Moret. Around the end of the 19th century when Dumas developed an immense posthumous popularity he hit on the clever expedient of converting some of Dumas' successful plays into novels using Dumas' dialogue and converting the stage directions into exposition. Williams constructed at least three such novelizations before this one. About 1900 he wrote D'Artagnan the King-Maker advertised by the publisher as a novelization of a Dumas play a sequel to Les Trois Mousquetaires that never actually existed".Arthur D. (Art) WILLIAMS, Garth
Original 4X5 3/4 Inch Children's Illustration by GARTH WILLIAMS ROBOTIC COATRACK
Original Artwork. Very Good. 4 X 5 3/4 Inches. Having purchased over 200 pieces of art from Garth Williams personal estate we discovered numerous illustrations for unknown children's book projects. We assume these to be from the 1960's when Garth was plagued by financial issues while supporting his second wife Dorothea and living in Mexico with his third wife Alicia Rayas. Garth actually married a fouth time and fathered his last child at the age of 66. While he was a prolific children's book artist of the 20th Century his earnings could never quite keep up with his lifestyle it would seem. The 1960's and 1970's saw Garth stretching his marketing abilities as well as attempting to rehash old royalty payments.

This unique piece of original art features a comic sketch of a robotic coatrack. Signed "Garth" in lower right corner. Pencil ID # from his estate on reverse.

Garth Williams was an illustrator of several of the more popular post-WWII children's books. His work includes Stuart Little 1945 and Charlotte's Web 1952 by E.B. White and the entire series of Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. he also illustrated Cricket in Times Square 1960 by George Selden and The Rescuers 1959 by Margery Sharp.

Some light toning and wear to corners. Original Artwork unknown

(Children's Books) WILLIAMS, Garth; SEBASTIAN, John
Early Draft Production Proofs & Original Drawing Archive for "JB's Harmonica" FROM THE COLLECTION OF GARTH WILLIAMS; 130 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS SKETCHES & PRODUCTION PAGES
New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1993. Original Artwork. ARCHIVE. Very Good.

Archive of over 125 Garth Williams 1912-1996 sketches letters proofs and production notes pertaining to "J.B.'s Harmonica" written by John Sebastian Lovin' Spoonful and illustrated by Garth Williams. Published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich the lot includes three copies of the stated "First Draft" of the book accompanied by two letters from the publisher discussing Garth's involvement in the project. The first letter is from Bonnie Ingber Editor of Children's Books for HBJ dated July 14 1987. The second letter is from Allyn M. Johnson Editor of Children's Books for HBJ dated July 27 1989.

This archive includes 68 original drawings and sketches by Garth Williams 12 of which are on card stock with four 4 being signed "Garth Williams" and nine 9 with "Happy Harmonica" or "Harmonica" in Garth's hand on them. The lot includes a mock-up of the book created by Garth. The lot also includes 39 additional printed artist proof pages some with notes and page numbers written in ink. Signed first printing signed and dated by John Sebastian also included.

The production of this book obviously took place over the course of several years with this lot being some of the earlier work done on the project. This fact is reflected in the that these original production drawings and sketches never made it to the final book. The drawings here are of "JB" as a human child. The book reflects "JB" James Bear as a bear cub. Most of the scenes portrayed in these drawings made it to the final published book they simply feature a bear instead of a human child. Interestingly this change created this archive of now UNPUBLISHED artwork that was saved by Garth himself and sold by the estate of Garth Williams. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich unknown
