Volume I is lacking the portrait of Boccaccio but all other plates are correct. Illustrated by Gravelot Eisen Cochin the Younger and Boucher reduced and engraved by Vidal. The imprint is false printed in Paris. Giovanni Boccaccio In French Jean Bocace was an Italian author poet and correspondent of Petrach. Boccaccio wrote a number of notable works including the Decameron and On Famous Women. As a poet who wrote in the Italian vernacular Boccaccio is particularly noted for his realistic dialogue which differed from his contemporaries. Condition: In paper covered boards. Externally sound with some wear to spines and bumping to extremities. Spines browned. Ink signature to front pastedown of volume I. Internally generally firmly bound. La «Vita nuova» del Boccaccio. Fortuna e tradizione
"(...) La Vita nuova è stata cosi in grado di suscitare reazioni assai diverse negli scribi che si sono confrontati con essa, tra i quali spicca Giovanni Boccaccio, che copiò il testo più volte, almeno due, stando alle trascrizioni conservate nei mss. Toledano e Chigiano. L'edizione boccacciana del «libello», sia dal punto di vista microstrutturale (la mise en page delle singole carte) sia da quello macrostrutturale (la composizione dei volumi in cui il prosimetro è inserito) esibisce l'interpretazione del testo e del suo autore, della Vita nuova e di Dante. Tali peculiarità, unite all'ampia messe di manoscritti descripti derivati dalle due copie conservate, hanno reso tale corpus di codici l'oggetto ideale per uno studio di filologia materiale che non si accontentasse di narrare la storia di una tradizione, ma che, analizzando la poetica visuale insita in ogni copia, cercasse di trovare una risposta anche ad alcuni interrogativi pili generali sulle relazioni tra storia della letteratura, storia della tradizione e critica del testo, offrendo sperabilmente anche qualche conoscenza critica in più sul prosimetro stesso.
