BLAKE Edward 1833 1912
A National Sentiment!" Speech. At Aurora; With The Comments Of Some Of The Canadian Press Thereon
Ottawa: E.A.Perry 1874. First Edition. "There have been few political speeches in Canada which have been more justly famous and which have exerted a wider influence on Canadian popular opinion than Edward Blake’s "Aurora Speech" of October 3 1874. The speech was delivered at a time when Edward Blake had taken up a somewhat independent attitude toward the Liberal party under Alexander Mackenzie and George Brown and was leaning toward the doctrines of the new nationalist or "Canada First" party. It was indeed little more than an elaboration of the platform of the Canadian National Association; but it served to give the ideas of the Canadian nationalists a currency which they had not gained before and in its bold and daring originality it gave a real stimulus to Canadian political thought. A speech which nearly half a century ago advocated such advanced ideas as the necessity for the growth of a national feeling in Canada the reorganization of the Empire on a federal basis the reform of the Senate compulsory voting and proportional representation can only be described as a landmark in Canadian politics…This pamphlet is now very rarely seen…". W.S. Wallace "Blake could not prevent himself from making snide references to Mackenzie and the Liberal government before an audience that he estimated was over 2000…The apparent trend of the government to yield ground on British Columbia’s railway demands brought him to apply some of his finest rhetorical excesses to that province that "sea of mountains" with which a deal approaching "insanity" had been struck by the Macdonald government. His intense nationalism framed within vague notions of imperial federation led him to call Canadians “four millions of Britons who are not free." DCB Casey I 3946. 8vo. pp. 107. stitched as issued edges of title stained Ottawa: E.A.Perry, 1874 unknown

Secret Language: Codes Tricks Spies Thieves and Symbols

With revelations on every page and sample codes and puzzles for the reader to crackSecret Languagewill entertain everyone with an urge to know more about the most arcane and curious uses of language. From backmasking to the Enigma Machine from magic words to literary symbols here is a lively engaging tour of languages that hide their meanings from all but a chosen few. Blake explains the difference between ciphers and codes and shows how secret messages have been written--and broken--for almost two thousand years. He explores the history and uses of the slang and argot of schools and trades tracing the stories of centuries-old cants such as those used by sailors and criminals--among them polari the mix of Italian Yiddish and slang once spoken among strolling players and circus folk and most recently adopted by the gay community. He examines the sacred languages of ancient cults and religions uncovers the workings of onomancy spells and gematria considers the obliqueness of allusion and parody and celebrates the absurdities of euphemism and jargon.
Oxford University Press, USA
