Incredibly prolific throughout the Victorian era he produced closed to 10000 over the course of his lifetime. This limited edition work is illustrated by George Cruikshank with 15 etchings. Collated complete. This Spanish novel was written by Miguel de Cervantes Saaverda and tells the story of the Alonso Quixano who is driven made by his multiple relationship anf so attempts to reinstate chivalry under the guise of Don Quixote de la Mancha. This was both incredibly popular and influential. Translated into English by Charles Jarvis. A delightful copy of this beloved literary work enhanced by the illustrations of this important artist and illustrator makes for a desirable copy. Condition: In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the spine label. Small mark to the rear board with a small tide mark to the front board to the tail. The front and rear hinges are strained with a tape repairs to the front hinge. Internally generally firmly bound with light straining to the reverse of the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Page are bright and generally clean with light spots to several plates. Adorned with illustrations. Volume I is the second edition of 1706 Volume II is the 1705 edition Volume III is the 1706 edition Volume IV is the 1731 edition Uniformly bound. Scarce in any edition. ESTC T125276. Illustrated with twelve plates across all volumes. To the binder's instructions it states that there should be sixteen plates. There are four plates lacking to volume IV according to the list 'The Duke Dutchess and Don Quixote Hunting' 'Don Quixote and Sancho Pancha Ride Blindfold' 'The Adventure of the Enchanted Head' 'Don Quixote Coquer'd'. Motteaux' translation is an important work the four volumes were initially published in 1700-03 and is extremely scarce in any condition. Motteaux' translation has been noted for adopting a more frivolous style compared to the ironic tone of Cervantes' original dialogue. Motteaux has also set this work in more of a French setting thus losing some of the Spanish ambiance of the original. Miguel de Cervantes is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and the wrold's pre-eminent novelist. His most famous work Don Quixote is considered to be the first modern European novel. The story of Don Quixote was originally published in two volumes 1605 and 1615. It is classed as the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden age as well as the entire Spanish canon. The novel is episodic in form and is written in the picaresque genre whereby the adventures of a roguish hero are depicted. Condition: In half morocco bindings with paper covered boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing to the spines and extremities. Inscription to the head of the title page to volume I which has partially been trimmed. Split to the fold of 'Don Quixot's Inchantment' which is the frontispiece to volume II. Tear is closed not affecting image. Small loss to the head of spine to volume IV and to the rear joint. Small loss to the head of volume II. Closely trimmed to the head of volume II affecting running title. Repair to page 297 of volume II with small loss of text. 'Adventure of the Lyons' plate is torn at the bottom joint closed tear to the head of this plate. The first six leaves to volume IV are closely trimmed to the fore edge affecting the text.
