‎Ortiz de Cervantes Juan‎

‎PARABIEN AL REY D. FELIPE IIII. N.S. QUE DA LA CABEÇA DEL REYNO DEL PIRU‎

‎Madrid 1621. 15 leaves. Folio. Loose gatherings. Outermost gathering neatly reinforced with tissue along spine and fore-edges. Discreet tissue repairs to fore- edge of other leaves. Clean and fresh. Very good. Memorial to the King of Spain written by Juan Ortiz de Cervantes Procurador General advocating for the rights of encomendero holders in Peru. Ortiz de Cervantes points out the need to treat the native population more gently - not from any moral stance but because the harsh labor draft for the Potosi mines was killing so many Indians that it was threatening the general economy of the province and thus the profits of the encomenderos. He also argues that Peru's Creole elite should be appointed to high offices based on their merits. Date and imprint suggested by EUROPEAN AMERICANA. Only two copies in OCLC at the John Carter Brown Library and the British Library. SABIN 1716. MEDINA BHA 6697. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 621/94. PALAU 205774. unknown books‎

‎Cervantes de Salazar Francisco 1514? 1575 From the library of Zelia Nuttal and George M Foster‎

‎Cronica de la Nueva Espana‎

‎xxiv843 pages with plates and index. Quarto 10 3/4" x 7 3/4" rebound in half red leather with gilt lettering to spine with original wrappers bound in. From the library of Zelia Nuttal and George M Foster. Limited to 500 copies. First edition. <br /><br />Cervantes de Salazar was one of the principal chroniclers who gathered data on the history and ethnography of Mexico. His most important book <i>Cronica de la Nueva Espana</i> <i>Chronicle of New Spain</i> written at the command of City Council. The manuscript of this work was sent by the author to Spain in 1567 with a request for the post of royal chronicler. This manuscript was uncovered in the early 1900s uncatalogued in the National Library of Madrid as an anonymous manuscript. the first volume was published in 1914 and the second and third in 1936. The <i>Chronicle</i> is fragmentary since the first part which was to include the period up to the conquest of Yucatan either was never written or was lost; and the second part which was to be a history of the conquest breaks off with Columbus sending Villafuerte and Sandoval to the Pacific Ocean. Cervantes de Salazar's sources were the <i>Letters</i> of Cortes; the memoirs of Alonso de Ojeda and Andres de Tapia captains in Cortes' army; the <i>Memoranda</i> of Motilinia; the work of Lopez de Gomara; and the information gathered from others who had taken part in the conquest who were sill living in Mexico City twenty-five years later from whom he received useful information. The <i>Chronicle</i> is valued for its understanding and evaluation of the events it describes.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />"With compliments of the Hispanic Society" slip tipped in and slip from the Congresso de los Diputados tipped in to copyright page with Nuttall's name as receiving copy number three which is such labeled of 500 copies. Foster's date of acquiry 10/4/44 on title. Original wrappers bound in and soiled some wear to edges of title inner hinge cracked else about very good. Hispanic Society hardcover books‎

‎Cervantes Enrique A.‎

‎Tasco en el Año de Mil Novecientos Veinteocho‎

‎Very Good. 1933. Hardcover. Portfolio of 55 plates depicting the city of Tasco Mexico and how it was in the year 1928. No publication information; printed by Manuel Casas in Mexico City October 1933. Portfolio is limited to 200 copies; this copy is unnumbered; signed by Cervantes on page vii in black ink. Fifty-five silver gel DOP prints with various surface sheens are tipped onto black cloth backing and heavy cardstock leaves; each photo has a printed caption in Spanish; leaves are unbound and housed in a portfolio with cloth boards title label on front board and spine and cloth ties. Portfolio has light wear to edges and light soiling to title label; title page dedication page and last leaf of text block have insect damage including three ½" - 1" holes on each leaf not affecting photos; a few leaves have moderate foxing and soiling; some photos have light silvering. The city of Tasco is more frequently known as Taxco or Taxco de Alarcón and is located in the state of Guerrero Mexico. The compiler of this stunning work was Enrique A. Cervantes 1898-1953 a civil engineer bibliophile photographer and historic preservationist. "He spent his life researching documenting restoring and photographing the architectural and decorative arts of colonial Mexico. Over his lifetime he published 22 books covering themes that included the history of urbanism in Mexico Mexican cities of the Viceregal period the crafts of talavera pottery and tile-making in Puebla ironworking and retablos of the 16th through 18th centuries. From 1928 to 1942 he produced ten limited edition portfolios of original photographs depicting the colonial heritage of various Mexican cities" The Latin American Library at Tulane. The "Templo parroquial Santa Prisca" the parish temple of Santa Prisca is photographed in detail; most of the images in this portfolio are dedicated to the temple's architecture and artwork. Other scenes depicted in this album include "Casa Humboldt" "Convento y Templo de San Bernardino de Sena" "Barrio y Capilla de San Miguel" "Cuadrilla de San Antonio Tehuitolepec" along with street views the main plaza and a panorama of the city from Guadalupe hill. The beautiful architecture and landscape of Tasco is presented in the album Cervantes emphasizing colonial art and architecture of the city. ; B&W Plates ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Signed by Author . hardcover books‎

‎Novelas Exemplares‎

‎Pamplona: Nicolas de Assiayn Impressor del Reyno de Navarra 1614. Second edition. xvi 391 3 pp. Collation: ¶8 A-2Z8 3A-3C8. 8vo. Early twentieth-century pigskin spine titled in gilt. Light rubbing to extremities some toning and spotting to text small wormhole at inner margin of title-page and following two leaves light dampstain to margins of first few gatherings. Contemporary inscription on title. Second edition. xvi 391 3 pp. Collation: ¶8 A-2Z8 3A-3C8. 8vo. The rare true second edition of Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares a collection of 12 novellas inspired by Boccaccio and first published by Robles in Madrid in 1613 between publication of the first and second parts of Don Quixote 1605 1615.<br/><br/>A Madrid edition of 1614 with the imprint of Juan de la Cuesta and Francisco de Robles was long thought to be the second edition and is identified as such by Ruis. It is in fact a piracy variously ascribed to the Lisbon printer Antonio Alvare vide Astrana Marín and more recently to the the Seville printer Gabriel Ramos Bejarano vide Jaime Moll "Novelas ejemplares Madrid 1614: edición contrahecha sevillana". <br/><br/>The present 1614 Pamplona edition is the true second edition with the privilege from the kingdom of Navarre granted on 11 January 1614. Cervantes' Madrid publisher Francisco de Robles had obtained privileges from Castille and Arragón for the 1613 first edition published in July of that year. He was determined to combat illegal reprintings and sued booksellers in Zaragosa intending to pirate the Novelas Marín VII p. 74. But he was unable to stop either the indignity of the 1614 piracy which used his own name or this authorized 1614 Pamplona edition printed by Nicolas de Assiayn. <br/><br/>This edition removes the sonnet of Juan de Solís Mexia printed in the first edition. Assiayn published a second Pamplona edition in 1617.<br/> <br/>The 1613 Madrid edition is rare known only in a handful of copies and we trace no copies at auction. The 1614 Pamplona edition is likewise uncommon with OCLC locating 9 complete copies only 2 of which are in the US UPenn and University of Chicago and the only recent auction record for an incomplete copy lacking its title-page. ‎Bando El gobierno procedera al arrendamiento de las fincas rusticas pertinecientes al fondo piadoso de Californias.‎

‎Mexico June 1 1832. First edition Mexico City issue of a rare and important bando on the California Pious Fund. These large 43x31 cm folio bando issues are rare because they were printed in oversize format on recto only in order to be posted in public places. Not in Cowan one copy only recorded on OCLC at Yale probably from the Streeter Collection. The Jesuit/ Franciscan holdings "donated" during the 18th and 19th century for the benefit of the California Missions exclusively were being confiscated by the Mexican government ostensibly for the same purpose but in reality the funds were totally misappropriated. The importance of this decree may be inferred by the fact that it was one of the decrees presented as evidence in the Pious Fund case that came before the International Court of Arbitration in 1899. Cervantes is described as "general de brigada y gobernador del Distrito Federal": he had been Iturbide's aide de camp and captain of the imperial guard. This is a remarkably fine double folio sheet with original folds. Quite rare. <br/><br/> unknown books‎

‎Florian ie. Jean Pierre Claris de Florian 1755 1794; Miguel de Cervantes. i. e.‎

‎Oeuvres de Florian.‎

‎Paris: Antoine-Augustin Renouard 1820. Hard cover. Very Good/The 1853 sale catalogue of books belonging to the printer-scholar Antoine Augustin Renouard describes several versions of his 1820 edition of the works of Florian in duodecimo: a trade edition #2453 an edition "with the plates from other editions" untrimmed #2454 yet another on pink velin with an extra set of plates on Chine #2455 and finally another just like it on green velin #2456. The copy offered here does not correspond exactly to any of those entries since it consist partly of the edition on pink velin and partly on plain velin and since it includes at least three states of practically every plate but extends to five states of some plates illustrating Don Quixote. Indeed Florian's Don Quixote was one of his successes next to his fables and pastorals. His mother was Spanish and Florian was instrumental in promoting Cervantes to a French audience through translations imitations such as his Galatea and popularizations. Brunet thought Florian "the best of our fabulists after La Fontaine." . 12mo 19 cm; 16 volumes. 80 engraved illustrations mostly by Desenne each presented in several states of printing on different stock. The vast majority of these are in three states one on pink velin one state on white Chine and a third on white velin. Two of the engravings are represented in 4 states and six of them are present in 5 states. Although Renouard clearly printed editions of this book on uniform stock of white pink or green velin this copy is mixed white and pink with some volumes all pink some all white and several which shift from gathering to gathering. Uniformly bound in original 1/4 green cloth over marbled boards with leather label on spine titled in gilt. One volume with loss to lower right corner of binding; bindings exhibit minor to light wear otherwise. Text block fresh untrimmed with occasional waterstains and occasional foxing on some plates. ‎Loza Blanca y Azulejo de Puebla‎

‎2 volumes: xi305 pages with tipped in colored and monochrome plates; 333 pages with tipped in colored and monochrome plates and reproduced signatures. Quarto 11 1/4" x 9" bound in half leather with gilt lettering to spine with original wrappers bound in. From the library of George M Foster. Copy 992 of 2000. Fist edition.<br /><br />For over four centuriesthe city of Puebla has been praised for its production of quality tin-glazed earthenware. The use of ceramic as a utilitarian and artistic medium in the Americas the region of eastern and central Mexico Guatemala Belize and Honduras has a long history of quality work dating back millenia before the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. But it was in fact the Spanish who first introduced to area potters tin- and lead-based glaze the potter's wheel and the kiln. Production of tin-glazed earthenware in the New World first began in Mexico City the viceregal capital of New Spain in the second half of the sixteenth century. By the seventeenth century however the nearby city of Puebla founded in 1531 as the second city of New Spain had become the more important center of production enjoying the widest distribution of any ceramic ware in the New World at the height of the Spanish Empire. For ceramists Puebla was an ideal location: The climate is mild the soil is fertile and most importantly there are extensive clay beds and sufficient deposits of raw sodium essential for glaze preparation. That the same area had captured the market for quality ceramics before the Spanish arrived is not a coincidence. Native potters must have played an important role in supporting the developing colonial industry. The early production of talavera poblana was primarily influenced by old-world traditions. Various European ceramic wares from Spain Holland and Italy were imported serving as important sources of inspiration for resident ceramists. Potters themselves no doubt also influenced form and design. According to the potters' ordinances established in 1653 master potters were to be only of Spanish descent. Contrary to the ordinances however some masters were Italian-born and probably arrived in Mexico via Spain; there were also a few mestizo of mixed native and Spanish parentage ceramists who rose to become "masters." The polychrome elements typify the Italian palette that was particularly influential in southern and central Spain beginning in the sixteenth century and the motifs reflect those popularized at the Spanish ceramic center of Talavera de la Reina in central Spain where Italian potters are known to have worked. Yet the careful rendering on the top left side of a turkey which is native to the Americas marks the piece as distinctly colonial. Among the most important cultural traditions that early Puebla potters integrated into their designs were those of Islamic origin. The horror vacui fear of empty decorative spaces is one Islamic convention that proved to impact a variety of styles. In fact one clause of the potters' ordinance stipulates the use of a dotting technique referred to as aborronado. The large deep and flat-bottom basin with steep slightly flared walls is an Islamic form that became particularly important in Puebla where the form was commissioned as baptismal fonts and wash receptacles. While a variety of techniques and decorative motifs traveled across the Atlantic from Europe another conduit of influences opened from the Pacific. With the settlement of the Philippines as a Spanish colony in 1559 the Spanish Empire established a trade route that connected its territories across three continents. From 1565 to 1815 the ships commonly known as the Manila galleons or Naos de la China transported luxury goods including highly prized Chinese porcelain to the Mexican port of Acapulco for further shipment to other colonies. Some pieces are known to have been kept in Mexico while others were transported across land to the port of Vera Cruz for shipment to Europe; on this route northward from the Pacific to the Gulf transporters undoubtedly passed through Puebla. Ming dynasty porcelain proved to be a particularly important source for a variety of patterns and motifs featured on Puebla ware. By the first quarter of the nineteenth century Puebla ceramists were using polychrome decoration with more frequency marking a sharp departure from the blue-and-white decoration of fine-grade ware that predominated for over 150 years. Of the pastel grounds employed perhaps the most popular was the pale-blue type known as azul punche after the candy of the same color made in Puebla for the day of the El Día de los Muertos Day of the Dead celebrations. Although the Chinese style still lingered potters were by now also turning to French Rococo decoration and in particular the ceramic ware of Alcora near the Mediterranean coast of Spain where the French styles had a profound impact.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Foster stamp on front end paper of both volumes else a very good to fine set.
