Designer social reformer and writer William Morris 1834 - 96 was a founder of the Arts and Crafts movement and a towering figure of Victorian artistic and cultural history. Inspired by the hand presses of the fifteenth century Morris established the Kelmscott Press to publish books of his own design and to revive the quality achieved by the pioneers of printing. The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer represents Morris's most ambitious undertaking as a printer and designer as well as his swansong; the four-year undertaking was completed just a few months before his death. Morris supervised every detail of production including the choice of ink and paper the design of the type and the use of ornaments and illustration. His lifelong friend the celebrated painter Edward Burne-Jones drew 87 magnificent full-page woodcut illustrations. "If we live to finish it" Burne-Jones wrote "it will be like a pocket cathedral - so full of design and I think Morris the greatest master of ornament in the world." The expensive beautiful books from the Kelmscott Press were designed to be read slowly to be savored and treasured in a way that formed a lasting bond between the reader the text and the author. For all their decorative richness the books maintain a clarity and simplicity that make them easy to read as well as a delight to the eye. As the culmination of the work of art that was Morris's life the Kelmscott Chaucer embodies the printer's attempt to restore the connection between artist art and society. The work was left unfinished at Urry's death and the final revision and completion were entrusted to Timothy Thomas who wrote the preface and glossary. The life of Chaucer prefixed to the volume was the work of the Reverend John Dart corrected and revised by Timothy Thomas. The glossary appended was also mainly compiled by Thomas. The edition features the portraits of Urry and Chaucer and twenty-six "equestrian portraits representing the twenty-four tellers of tales including the Plowman…" - Reimer. Printed by William Bowyer; his records show three sizes printed: 1000 copies demy; 240 royal; 10 writing royal. This copy measures 40 cm tall. "John Urry produced the first edition of the complete works of Chaucer in a Latin font published posthumously in 1721. Included were several tales according to the editors for the first time printed a biography of Chaucer a glossary of old English words and testimonials of author writers concerning Chaucer dating back to the 16th century. According to A. S. G Edwards "This was the first collected edition of Chaucer to be printed in roman type. The text of Urry's edition has often been criticized by subsequent editors for its frequent conjectural emendations mainly to make it conform to his sense of Chaucer's metre. The justice of such criticisms should not obscure his achievement. His is the first edition of Chaucer for nearly a hundred and fifty years to consult any manuscripts and is the first since that of William Thynne in 1534 to seek systematically to assemble a substantial number of manuscripts to establish his text. Quarter leather and cloth with gilt illustration on front cover red spine label folio 34 cm. unpaginated c800 pp. From the introduction: "The present volume sets out to provide as simply as possible a conspectus of the works of Chaucer as they appeared to readers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Few manuscripts were available but the works appeared in a series of volumes which until the end of the century were not so very unlike in size appearance and content the great manuscript volumes of the fifteenth century. In 1532 appeared the first serious attempt to gather together all of Chaucer's productions The Workes of Geffray Chaucer etc. a folio edited by William Thynne printed by Thomas Godfiray a facsimile of which constitutes the bulk of the present volume. The sixteenth century editions are the subject of the present facsimile. The 1532 edition is the basis and additional material from the editions of 1542 1561 1598 and 1602 is included in that order. The edition of 1550 did not add any material and is therefore not represented. The present facsimile is thus not representative of any single copy after Thynne but makes available all that appeared in Chaucer's name from 1532 to 1602 and that was known as Chaucer's to readers including Sidney Spenser Shakespeare Milton Dryden and Pope essentially in the form in which they knew it. A well-produced facsimile edition of the first serious attempt at collecting together the whole of Chaucer's works. From W.W. Skeat's introduction: "Exclusive of The Romaunt of the rose part of which is by Chaucer and Surigon's Latin epitaph the folio includes 40 pieces. Of these 18 are by Chaucer; 8 apparently by Lydgate; 2 by Hoccleve; 1 apiece by Henryson Ros Usk Gower Clanvowe and Scogan 6 in all; and 6 are anonymous. To these we may add 1 more piece by Chaucer viz his Balade on gentilesse introduced into the midst of the piece by Scogan .
