Utterly charming pochoir plates explicating the printing process as practiced by Draeger which produced the most opulent and beautiful trade catalogues and other publications at the time and was unquestionably a premier if not the premier commercial printer in France and worldwide. Signed in ink by a Draeger and by Ruhlmann -- whoever Ruhlmann was. Folio 38 by 31.5 cm. Unpaginated text pages six in all which is entirely in Cocteau's verse with following color plates numbered 1 to 11. We should note that the coloring is somewhat modest in scale amounting to three colors and some limited shading of these colors. Yet the color effectively accentuates and enlivens Martin's humorous illustrations which also have the simplicity and gentle caricature one associates with cartoons. Paper pastedown on cover with a few small tears and chips. Light soiling of the portfolio cover and in plate margins -- a good amount can be diminished with an eraser if an effort is made. ‎n.p. n.d. 1937 1937. A collection of typescripts of thirteen short stories by Lise Deharme with five signed drawings by Jean Cocteau. Some of the stories are drafts with manuscript or typed amendments and some in fair copy. Each story with its illustration is loosely inserted into a card folder. Also present is the original pink file which contained the stories and drawings. On the cover of this is inscribed in De harme's hand: "Lise Deharme 146 rue de Grenelle Paris VII. Quleque dessins de Cocteau". All housed in a custom made box with paper label to spine. Given their brevity and simplicity their subject matter and the nature of the drawings these stories were clearly intended for young children - she had two of her own Tristan and Hyacinthe. We have found no evidence of these stories and drawings being published. None of them is dated but we would tentatively suggest a date in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Deharme and Cocteau were corresponding regularly at this time and Deharme was working on a book of children's poems with photographs by Claude Cahun - published in 1937 as Le Coeur de Pic. Clearly Deharme was planning another book for children this time of stories and with drawings by another leading figure of the surrealist movement Jean Cocteau. � Lise Deharme 1898-1980 has tended to be written about as little more than a muse to the great surrealists Breton Cocteau Dali and Ernst. It is true that a chance meeting with André Breton in 1924 first drew her into the circle of the surrealists but by 1933 she was running the magazine Phare de Neuilly which brought together surrealist poems and short stories and political commentary. As well as editing the work of others Deharme wrote widely herself and collaborated extensively with other surrealists. Mention is made in the literature of her work with the artists Cahun and Leonor Fini but we have found no reference to a collaboration with Cocteau. Which makes this collection of unknown and unpublished illustrated stories especially important and exciting. 1. Muscade. La Petite Fille aux dix doigts. Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau 5 July 1889 - 11 October 1963 was a French poet novelist dramatist designer boxing manager playwright and filmmaker. Along with other Surrealists of his generation Jean Anouilh and René Char for example Cocteau grappled with the "algebra" of verbal codes old and new mise en scène language and technologies of modernism to create a paradox: a classical avant-garde. His circle of associates friends and lovers included Jean Marais Henri Bernstein Colette Édith Piaf whom he cast in one of his one act plays entitled Le Bel Indifferent in 1940 and Raymond Radiguet. His work was played out in the theatrical world of the Grands Theatres the Boulevards and beyond during the Parisian epoque he both lived through and helped define and create. His versatile unconventional approach and enormous output brought him international acclaim. Wallace Fowlie 1908-1998 was an American writer and professor of literature. He was the James B. Duke Professor of French Literature at Duke University where he taught from 1964 to the end of his career. Although he published more than twenty books he was devoted to teaching particularly undergraduate courses in French Italian and modernist literature. Took his A.B. at Harvard College in 1930 then a Master's in 1933 and a Ph.D. in 1936 also at Harvard. Before coming to Duke in 1964 he taught at Bennington College University of Chicago and Yale University. Fowlie was also noted for his correspondence with literary figures such as Henry Miller René Char Jean Cocteau André Gide Saint-John Perse Marianne Moore and Anaïs Nin. He is best known for his translations of Arthur Rimbaud which were appreciated by a younger generation that included Jim Morrison whose work Fowlie also became a scholar of and Patti Smith. In 1990 Fowlie consulted with director Oliver Stone on the film The Doors. From the forties onward Fowlie filled a vacuum in academia. There was room for a great teacher and explainer of significant modern French poets and writers in America and England. For several decades Fowlie was the pre-eminent critic of French literature in America something which earned him a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship in 1947.4 He published book after book on the great French writers he revered including Mallarmé and Rimbaud. He was the first translator of Rimbaud in English: his Rimbaud Complete Works Selected Letters appeared in 1966. This work aligned him with his friend Henry Miller whose work he championed and brought Rimbaud to a new generation of fans — and with it the acknowledgment and gratitude of rock stars Patti Smith and Jim Morrison. Morrison wrote Fowlie a letter which he forgot about until his students played him the music of the Doors. He quickly recognized Rimbaud's influence in the lyrics.
