Programme de la répétition générale de l'Ecurie Watson au théâtre Saint-Georges (le 9 juillet 1937). Un double feuillet imprimé sur quatre pages. 1935 : Pierre Fresnay et Yvonne Printemps, séduits par l'irrésistible Maurice Sachs, lui suggèrent de leur écrire une comédie. Sachs écrit successivement cinq pièces sans jamais réussir à convaincre les deux comédiens. En définitive, Fresnay lui propose d'adapter un des succès londoniens de l'année 37, French without tears de Terence Rattigan. L'adaptation plait à Fresnay qui, occupé par ailleurs, laissera Sachs se charger de la distribution, des répétitions et même du rôle principal (tout au moins pour la générale si l'on s'en tient à notre programme). La pièce sera jouée avec succès tout l'été. Henri Raczymow qui reproduit les pages centrales du programme dans sa biographie de Sachs (Maurice Sachs, Gallimard, 1988) indique que L'Ecurie Watson sera aussi la cause de la rupture définitive de l'auteur avec Cocteau, Sachs ayant tenté de débaucher pour sa pièce les comédiens auxquels Cocteau faisait répéter dipe. Document rare.

br. L'interesse di Jean Cocteau è interamente rivolto alla «poesie», come strumento principe per conoscere e rappresentare il mondo, soprattutto quello interiore, ed è proprio in questa chiave che bisogna leggere anche ir suo cinema. Il suo approdo alla «dixième muse» è assolutamente naturale per un artista a tutto tondo come lui, che non ha mai operato una netta distinzione tra le arti, promuovendo una straordinaria intermedialità ed esplorando i tutti i tipi di linguaggio tino a scoprire le potenzialità del connubio tra immagine e parola in questa «véritable art des poétes». I suoi film, intervallati spesso da un notevole lasso - di tempo, si presentano come degli «objets difficiles à ramasser», secondo la celebre espressione di cui il poeta stesso si serve per definire le sue opere, in quanto è difficile inferirli a pieno in una corrente artistica e sono piuttosto criptici, se non si conosce a fondo la sua concezione del cinema. Infatti Cocteau può essere a buon,diritto inserito nel novero dei teorici del cinema, in quanto, pur non avendo mai scritto un vero e proprio trattato sull'argomento, in numerose sue opere si evincono i principi guida della sua riflessione sul nuovo medium, che si ritrovano poi applicati nella sua filmografia.

Stamp of Schirmer music present to the FFEP and the titel page. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Oedipus rex is an "Opera-oratorio after Sophocles" by Igor Stravinsky scored for orchestra speaker soloists and male chorus. The libretto based on Sophocles's tragedy was written by Jean Cocteau in French and then translated by Abb� Jean Dani�lou into Latin; the narration however is performed in the language of the audience.
