‎Martha Quest‎

‎Plume 1970. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Minor general wear pages lightly toned. 1970 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author!. 248 pp. "The heroine of this powerful searching novel is a passionate and intelligent young woman whose ideals are totally at odds with the life she observes around her. The daughter of provincial parents Martha Quest has been raised in a small-minded town in Central Africa - a community where hypocrisy intolerance and mindless traditionalism prevail. The book which traces Martha from adolescence through an ill-conceived marriage depicts her abrasive relationships with her elders her contemporaries and society as a whole. Martha Quest is a true child of this century. Her personal conflicts mirror the convulsions and aspirations of our time: her successful rebellion her liberation and its tragic failures and finally her despair transmuted into a relentless determination to understand life. ‎The Diaries Of Jane Somers.‎

‎London: Michael Joseph 1984. First edition. Octavo original cloth. Signed by Doris Lessing on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Phil Kay. First published in 1984 under a pseudonym as 'The Diary of a Good Neighbour' and 'If the Old Could .' now published as 'The Diaries of Jane Somers' this is in many ways classic Lessing. As resonant with social and political themes as 'The Golden Notebook' Lessing returns to the realism of her early fiction with the wisdom and experience of maturity. The diaries introduce us to Jane an intelligent and beautiful magazine editor concerned with success clothes and comfort. But her real inadequacy is highlighted when first her husband then her mother die from cancer and Jane feels strangely removed. In an attempt to fill this void she befriends ninety-something Maudie whose poverty and squalor contrast so radically with the glamour and luxury of the magazine world. The two gradually come to depend on each other - Maudie delighting Jane with tales of London in the 1920s and Jane trying to care for the rapidly deteriorating old woman. 'The Diary of Jane Somers' contrasts the helplessness of the elderly with that of the young as Jane is forced to care for her nineteen-year-old drop-out niece Kate who is struggling with an emotional breakdown. Jane realizes that she understands young people as little as she so recently did the old. Michael Joseph hardcover books‎

‎The Golden Notebook.‎

‎New York: Simon & Schuster 1962. First American edition of the Nobel Prize winning author's magnum opus. Octavo original cloth. Signed by the author on the half-title page "I wish you good fortune- Doris Lessing 17.7.80 24 Gada Garden London." Also with postcard from the British Museum signed by Lessing on the same date. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. Jacket design by Janet Halverson. "I looked at her and thought: That's my child my flesh and blood. But I couldn't feel it. She said again: `Play mummy.' I moved wooden bricks for a house but like a machine. Making myself perform every movement. I could see myself sitting on the floor the picture of a `young mother playing with her little girl.' Like a film shot or a photograph." These words exemplify the themes Lessing struggled with in The Golden Notebook. They question the notion of identity. In the above quote the protagonist cannot reconcile who she needs to be to remain healthy and whole with what the ideologies of society require her to be. This obsession with constructing a comprehensive sense of identity leads to an infinite fictionalization of the protagonist's life. Lessing's work is not only a significant feminist polemic; it is a multilayered glance into the political climate of the 1960's. Simon & Schuster hardcover books‎
