Lyons: Ex Calcographia Jean Marion Symon Vincent. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1521. Leather. 160 unnumbered leaves sig: AA8; a-p8 q4 A-C8 D4. Quarto in 8s measuring 10x7". Bound in full old leather with blind stamped borders many repairs rebacked lovely patina. Red and black title page with richly illustrated architectural frame above two woodcuts representing Christ's passion centered on Vincent's large woodcut printer's mark. The text in a lovely Gothic text is beautifully illustrated with 16 woodcuts some repeats with scenes from Boethius's life and 5 woodcut diagrams along with 1 large historiated initial and many smaller initials. Another smaller Vincent printer's mark is on the verso of the last leaf. The text is framed by commentary in smaller type. In two parts the first containing the Consolation of Philosophy with commentary by Badius Palasinus and Pseudo-Aquinas now identified as Thomas Waleys. The second part has separate signatures and title: Boetius de disciplina scholarium ab Ascensio compediose dilucieo explanatus. While once attributed to Boethius it is now thought to be by Thomas de Cantimpre. This particular copy is framed by 3 manuscript pages all in the same secretary hand: the first on the front pastedown and the last as the free end paper with manuscript filling recto and verso. There is also a stub of old vellum manuscript with red and blue penwork that is visible at the gutter of a1 more of which can be glimpsed through the rear pastedown. An interesting and complicated production of Boethius. On the verso of the title are two poems by Jacobus Soqualha and on the verso of AA8 the Tabula is a letter published by Nicolas Crescius in his 1507 Florence edition of De Consolatione. Ancius Manlius Severinus Boethius was the greatest Roman philosopher of his era. His translations and commentaries on Aristotle greatly influenced Western philosophy and his On the Consolation of Philosophy was the most widely read book in medieval Europe after the Bible. The story behind the Consolation is tragic: from the high office of Magister Officiorum the head of the entire civil administration of Rome under the barbarian Emperor Theodoric Boethis was suddenly accused of treason arrested and quickly found himself a solitary prisoner .with death hanging over him and a terror worse than death in the fear lest those dearest to him should be involved in the worst results of his downfall. It is in this situation that the opening of the 'Consolation of Philosophy' brings Boethius before us. He represents himself as seated in his prison distraught with grief indignant at the injustice of his misfortunes and seeking relief for his melancholy in writing verses descriptive of his condition. Suddenly there appears to him the Divine figure of Philosophy in the guise of a woman of superhuman dignity and beauty who by a succession of discourses convinces him of the vanity of regret for the lost gifts of fortune raises his mind once more to the contemplation of the true good and makes clear to him the mystery of the world's moral government. James: The Consolation of Philosophy of Boethius. And so refreshed Boethius went on to face death with classic Roman calm. It is no wonder that this account was so beloved in medieval and early modern times a bracing source of philosophic courage for all experiencing adversity. The manuscript pages at front and back are intriguing. They are not commentary on the Boethius text but a separate account of an ongoing community issue presumably in France since one of the names mentioned is Occitan concerning a terrible man.

. The translation of the three pages is preliminary because the handwriting and abbreviations are difficult. Condition is good. The binding is worn and repaired but still attractive. Interior endpapers have some old booksellers' notes and a small institutional stamp text has some foxing and browning throughout and an occasional small stain but in general clean and attractive. Top edge of book block has Boecius" written in an old faded script. An attractive and intriguing copy of a relatively scarce edition USTC locates only 12 copies and just a few of the earlier editions as well. OCLC 660081380 USTC 145373. Äußerst seltene offenbar unbekannte Variante dieser seltenen Postinkunabel: die digitalisierten Exemplare der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek und der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek sowie alle online nachweisbaren Exemplare bestehen aus 48 Blatt das Exemplar der Staatsbibliothek Berlin ist ein Kriegsverlust ! Bei dem vorliegenden Exemplar ist der Text weitgehend identisch mit den Digitalisaten aber auf Seite 1 fehlt der Hinweis auf den Drucker Heinrich Stephanus es wurden unterschiedliche Initialen verwendet und lateinische Abkürzungen werden teils verschieden gehandhabt. Das "Abschiedsgedicht" an den Leser steht beim vorliegenden Exemplar vor dem Index bei den Digitalisaten nach dem Index. Beim vorliegenden Exemplar fehlt auf Fol. XXX r der in den Digitalisaten auf Fol.47 r zu findende Text: "Completum in alma Parisiorum Academia: anno . millesimo / quingentesimo / duodecimo / septimo Calendas Septembres. Per Henricum Stephanum .". Möglicherweise ist das ein Hinweis darauf dass es sich beim vorliegenden Exemplar um die erste Ausgabe vom August 1512 handelt Fol. II r unten: "Parisiis. M.D.XII. Idibus Augustis." während die digitalisierten Exemplare am 1. September des gleichen Jahres nachgedruckt wurden. "Josse van Clichtove oder Judocus Clichtoveus Neoportuensis Geboren: 1472 Nieuwpoort Belgien; Gestorben: 22. September 1543 Chartres Frankreich war ein flämischer Theologe Priester und Humanist." Wikipedia. Clichtove oder Clicthove war von Jacques d'Amboise Abt von Cluny und Bischof von Clermont beauftragt worden die Erziehung seiner Neffen Francois und Geoffroy zu überwachen und Clichtove schrieb "De vera nobilitate" für Francois. "De vera nobilitate" scheint nicht ins Deutsche übersetzt worden zu sein es existiert aber eine Übersetzung ins Französische unter dem Titel: "Traité de la véritable Noblesse et des vertus." Set in 2 sizes of roman type in the Venetian style: that of the main text used here for the first time is the first roman type cut by Simon de Colines. Ad 2: With numerous woodcut decorated initials 4 series the largest 45-47 mm criblé initials. Two Paris first editions from 1519 on the priesthood and the education of priests both complete with their final blank leaves often lacking finely produced by two of the most important printer-publishers of the 16th century Henri Estienne I and Josse Bade. They are here preserved in a 16th-century binding made for what is likely to be a descendent of the first author's editor.Ad 1: First edition of an influential work on the office and customs of the priesthood by Josse Clichtove 1472- 1543. A champion of reform in philosophical and theological studies during the earlier part of his life Clichtove later devoted himself almost exclusively to combating the doctrines of Luther. In the present work he developed a new and comprehensive concept of the office of the priesthood that anticipated the counter-Reformation spirit of the Council of Trent. It also defended clerical celibacy and the fast in opposition to Erasmus whom he never mentions by name. The book's fine typography owes much to the young Simon de Colines probably foreman of Estienne's printing office at this date. Vervliet notes the present Clichtove edition as the first use of Colines's first roman type used for its main text making this roman type the progenitor of the most famous French Renaissance romans by Claude Garamont and others in the 1530s. Ad 2: First edition of a manual for priests compiled and edited by Jean Marre 1436-1521 bishop of Condom.The Marre apparently came from the library of the Chartreuse de Vauvert Carthusian monastery in Paris. The two works were bound together for a French clergyman with "D. Joanmes! Lassere" on the front board and his inscription "Lassere vallis vividis". He is no doubt related to perhaps descended from the Louis Lasséré d. Paris 1546 who edited works by Clichtove beginning in 1534. He probably made the occasional marginal manuscript note mark or underlining appearing in both volumes. With some stains in the first quire of the Marre and repairs to the fold of its outer bifolium but otherwise in very good condition with only a small marginal stain in 1 leaf and occasional minor foxing. Other plates depict situations in later stages of life such as a guardian introducing a child to a teacher the guardian and child at a shoemaker's shop and the guardian making a record of his charge's assets with an accountant. This edition incorporates two other works. De Magnificentia Policiae Amplissimae Civitatis Brugarum first published in 1544 is a political and sociological study of Bruges. It is illustrated with a folding plan of the city. Subhastationum Compendiosa Exegesis first published in 1546 is a brief treatise on public sales. It has an illustration of an auction scene. This is believed to be the first depiction of an auction to appear in a book.
