Unfortunately, most of the literature on African art has ignored East Africa or implied that it is a region devoid of art. Yet studies of the Makonde and the Swahili already indicate the existence of strong artistic traditions in this area of Africa. There is really no evidence to suggest that East Africa is an artistic wasteland; rather, the problem is that there has been too little research done on the subject to lead to any useful conclusive statements. This bibliography is meant as a stimulus to interest in and research on East African art, so that the truth of the matter can be ascertained. For the purposes of this bibliography, the term East Africa is used in its modern political sense to include the nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Because the Makonde people and their immediate neighbors inhabiting parts of Tanzania and Mozambique have a distinct artistic style, they have been included here as the Makonde Group. As an art style region, East Africa should include not only these countries but also Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Ruanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia. It is hoped that eventually there will be full bibliographic coverage of the art of all of East Africa. This bibliography is a first step toward that goal. ... ‎Édition originale du premier catalogue consacré à l’artiste Adolphe Giraldon (1855-1933), l’un des grands noms de l’histoire du livre et de l’illustration de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle.Peintre avant tout symboliste, il illustra des ouvrages d’Albert Samain, Maeterlinck, Henri de Régnier, Alfred de Musset, Maurice de Guérin, Ernest Psichari, etc. mais son chef-d’œuvre est sans aucun doute son travail effectué sur les Églogues de Virgile qu’il publia en 1906.On retrouve également son nom dans des illustrations faites pour l’éditeur Larousse, pour des billets de banques, des ex-libris, des affiches commémoratives, des menus, des publicités, etc. Il dessina le célèbre « caractère Giraldon ». Mais il fut aussi l’un des tous premiers sinon le premier artiste non-relieur à dessiner des décors de reliures. Il collabora pour cela avec les grands praticiens de l’époque tels que Henri Noulhac, Paul Affolter, René Aussourd, Georges Canape, Léon Gruel, Charles Lanoë, Charles Meunier, etc.Commençant une biographie de Giraldon, faite à partir de ses mémoires, ce catalogue présente la collection d’un amateur qui a su réunir un ensemble remarquable de ce que l’artiste a fait de mieux. Il propose, dans des conditions exceptionnelles, la majorité des livres illustrés par ce dernier, notamment l’exemplaire unique des Églogues avec tous les dessins originaux, des reliures d’une remarquable qualité dont huit proposant des décors de l’artiste, des affiches, des centaines de dessins originaux, des correspondances, etc.Tirage à moins de 500 exemplaires.‎
